I am interested in the idea. i will need some time to get some room and I
think we should wait till the weather warms because just today we got a lot
of snow. Maybe spring early summer. If thats ok with the betta donors...lol.
Phil has agreed to wait for a while also. I would be honoured to be the
betta pals coordinator.

Thought this might be inspiring if any of you are down on your luck
lately with spawning.. It also addresses the issue of sex-changing fish,
which is completely normal for some species. Bettas? Hmmm...
Cheers!

Rare ornamental fish bred in captivity
The Hawaiian masked angelfish has been bred in captivity for the first
time. The rare ornamental fish was born at the Waikiki Aquarium.
Collectors pay as much as $5,000 for the Hawaiian masked angelfish,
which is native to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
"We're thrilled with this landmark achievement in the field of
aquaculture," aquarium director Bruce Carson. The parental fish were
all juvenile females when they were collected at Midway Island in 1993.
They grew to maturity at the aquarium.
Spawning research began when one of the females changed sex and
became a male, which is normal as the
species ages, Mr Carlson added. A breakthrough came when aquarium
biologist Karen Brittain discovered a new, living food source to sustain
the small larval angelfish, he said.
The first-ever aquarium-bred larval masked angelfish began
metamorphosis over the past two weeks, with the juveniles now
one-half-inch miniatures of their parents, Mr Carlson said.
I would love to help you out Jeff. Whatever you need me to do just
ask. i feel I am already helping out by bring some of Phils bettas to
Canada and it is a start. If we can spread some good stock around
then we can improve things. I am still looking for more people so e-
mail me if anyone is interested.

Well a few months after we started we brought up the idea of elected officials but it was shot down. I have been the Contact person but would welcome some other officials.
LOL....I know eh? What is with our dollar..it just sucks. You know I would love to get an actual chapter going, you know with presidents and secretaries and so on and so on. i feel that if we made it as official as possible we might be taken more seriously by the americans. Yes it may be small to start out but with time it will grow and become much better. We really need to get things going.

WelI must say that Betta's are the most interesting fish I have ever had. The Male that I kept is only happy in a Green Tank! If I clean the Algie out of his tank he looses his color and sit's on the bottom. Go figure, LOL. He is in a 2.5 Gallon tank with Java Moss and Extreemly over grown Algie.
I think they all have different personalities, or maybe genetic markers? Anyway, I would just be glad you found something that works. Myself, I only use live plants, no cups or celophane.
I know this really doesn't answer your question but might give some insight.

OK, I just got the word that we will be in the Feb. Issue of Flare.
Larissa Williams is rounding up a bunch of Chapter reports and will
put the following blurb in for us.
----------
Hi Everybody!
The Betta Breeders Canada is centerally located in Southwestern
Ontario. Our members are from all over Canada and we keep in touch
via our Yahoo Group. We have yet to have an In Person Meeting but
as our membership grows I'm sure people will start get together.
Initially we formed this club as a way to make better quality fish
more available to breeding programs in Canada. As an amature
breeder in Canada the shipping and handling charges as well as
Import/Export charges form the US make it an expensive proposition.
As you can see we are a club still very much in it's infancy. We
have no elected representives nor do we charge a membership fee.
This may change in the near future, or maybe it will never change.
We are a simple group promoting the ideals and standards of the IBC
while trying to have fun!
Jeff Gusso
BBC
----------
So how's it look? And also, I would really like to submit at least
1 article for the February issue. I was thinking "Trials and
Tribulations of a Canadain Breeder" Anyone want to help?
Thought there might be some of us that would want in on this ......

Well my suggestion, for what it's worth would be to throw them in a
tank and see what you end up with. I have had spawns that turned
out brown and ugly, they are interm spawn that hold the genetics for
what I wanted in the end and although I never did get what I wanted
I have breed some wonderful fish from those ugly ones. As a matter
of fact the ones I have sold I am told are winning first and second
place in Local Aquarium shows.
Now what I was working for was a Melano/Camboidian and they all have
the genes for it. Now I don't have the prunet square in front of me
but they ended up ccblblmm. They are black bodied with a strong
steel color on the fins. Some had red in the fins but not to much.
Anyway, Now I'm babbling so I better stop typing.
Jeff
I currently have 2 big ugly females. From my spawn, only 2 young have
survived to maturity, a male with blue body, red fins and blue edging
on all the fins. They are 50% DT, and may have some comb tail
tendency, judging by the female's caudal fin. I have a gorgeous
blue/black male also, but he's too old to breed. Should I cross the
male and female?
Right now I have several pet-store bettas, one is a great blue/black
piebald marbled female (an accidental inlusion in a shipment of petstore
males). Perhaps this spring I can convince one of the local stores to
import some "fancy" plakats (marbled guys to breed with her). We can
all dream right? I don't have any deltas or other ibc-type stock right
now, as I'm in residence and couldn't easily hide a spawning tank and
multiple jars... and my dream betta, as some of you have probably read
in the yahoo club, is a black and yellow striped betta (bumblebees!). I
believe Marianne got one like that from her salamanders...
Hope everyone and their bettas are having a great winter ! (brrrr...)

Glad to have another one aboard! We also have 2 new members today,
I beleive they are both IBC members but I could be mistaken.
Anyway, I currnetly have only one betta. A Melano Male with Steel
irredecance. I have sold the remainer of my stock at Various Local
Auctions. In the spring I hope to order better stock than I had but
have yet to decide on who I will order from. Probably End up being
Jeff Hiller ... not 100% though.
How about everyone else? I think most of us were doing Veil Tail,
LFS stuff. Anyone aquire good or even great stock lately?
Jeff
Jeff, I have a current IBC membership too. Out of curiosity what is
everyone breeding out there in the BBC. I'm currrently wrapped up in
marbles, yellows, opaques, turqs, black/orange genos.
Anyway, would anyone be willing to write some type of article on the challenges of the Betta hobby in Canada? I would be willing to help but am not really the best writer (is that a word?).
Well it's getting to be that time of year when the IBC will be
wanting to know how many IBC members we have in the group. We
apparently only have 4 of the 5 we need to be a chapter. This
probably doesn't matter 2 much since we are not doing anything as a
chapter but do still want to change that.
So, any idea's on beefing up Membership in our club as well as IBC
memberships and benifits. I have almost given up trying to get the
American Betta Pal's program expanded to include us, I am more
infavor of running our own Canadian Betta Pal's type program. I am
fairly certain we can get donated stock to get us going.
I am also going to contact the editor of Flare (can't remember her
name right now) and see if we can get something put in the next
issue.
So guy's ..... let's see what we can get up an running, not to
mention getting Canada on the map with a show!!!!! OK maybe that's
hoping alittle much but I would really like to have some type of
show.
Jeff
With the holidays comes time for reflection so i wanted to share
with you all a touching christmas poem.......a tradition of a friend
that he send this out each year, this year I to will send it also.
Perhaps this year more then any recent others this poem is abit more
relevant.
----------
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEE
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."
This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan.

K' All, what's going on? I know we are into the colder season and
many will not be shipping until the spring but I'm sure we all have
things on the go.
This Club has taken a back seat for quite sometime and I think it's
time I did what I could 2 kick start it. I don't want our IBC
status to be taken away because I didn't get things rolling.
So how many IBCers do we have now anyway? I have a family
membership so that counts 2 towards our total of 5 we need to be
official.
Anyway, type at y'all later
Jeff
