Thanks for writing. Let me again stress that I did not PERSONALLY hear the poem, but it was recited to me VERBATIM by people who lived in different cities and who did not know each other, so I must believe that it happened. It is indeed possible that it was on the final WJW signoff.
Regarding the final WJW program, I know that his regular show on WJW, which began at 10 p.m., was gone by early April, not June 1. It's possible that he did some shows after that for them, but considering the sour relationship, why would he?
You're probably already aware of this, but there is a tape of the first hour of one of the last WJW shows which is, or at least was, available at reelradio.com. Listening carefully and piecing logic together, the show can be positively identified as being specifically from Tuesday, 4-1-58. Apparently this tape was recorded by an engineer at one of the other Cleveland stations. What's weird about it is that there are NO commercials. Perhaps they were cut out, but the program continuity is so good that whoever cut them out had to be UNUSUALLY skillful. (The periodic time checks from Pete as the tape runs indicate that NOTHING was cut out.)
Regards,
Ed

Ever since you posted this message something has bothered me. I have investigated it thoroughly and have finally put the pieces together based on my own memory and surrounding known facts. Here is what I now believe happened.
- The event took place exactly as you described it except that it was not at WHK on June 29, 1959. I listened to Mad Daddy's last show on June 26 and tuned in again the following Monday, just in case. He was gone and another MoR show had replaced him so I know for a fact there was no mad daddy show on Monday, June 29, 1959.
- I also heard his last WJW show on Monday, June 1, 1958, but since his show in those days went on until after 1 AM, I had gone to sleep before sign-off. I tuned in on Tuesday, June 2 and his show had simply disappeared with no explanation as to why. It was only later that I learned of the move to WHK.
- Although as far as I know, no tape
exists to prove it, I now believe that Pete, having signed with WHK and being told by management that WJW that the 90 day no compete clause in his contract would be enforced to the letter decided to show his displeasure and get even with the station. That is why he closed the June 1, 1958 show with the offending poem as you described it. It would anger WJW management (and perhaps even get them in trouble with the FCC) but being so late at night would not have been heard by most of his young fans (or understood by those who did happen to hear it).
I guess we will never know for sure, but this is the only explanation that makes sense, given that I heard both the June 2, 1958 and June 29, 1959 non-appearances.
Cheers.

Part One:
*Warning some of the following may contain falsehoods, and or deceptions, but more than likely most of it is true (no, really)!
While hunting in the Congo for records I came upon a record shop in a most unusual place.
Having just hewn my way thru miles of dense undergrowth I came across a dark and foreboding cave.
I had heard from the natives that many riches could be found there. Many had come before me, but none had ever been seen again. The natives did not care for records, but the white man, the white man kept coming.
The stench that emitted from the cave was nauseating. My eyes began to sting and water profusely...
I had to tie my bandana around my mouth and nose in order to keep from retching. Sancho, my dear departed steward, had given me some ointment to swab underneath my nose to help quell the fetid odor. I can't quite remember what he said it was made of, but thank god he had given it to me, for it helped me in this, my darkest hour.
The cave was like any other I had encountered in my many years of travel. Littered outside were the bones of collectors past, who had come like I had come, with a wad full of cash and thoughts of rare records in their heads.
The jungle was on my side this day, and I had made it unscathed...maybe it was because I regularly bathe and comb my hair, or because I don't like to spend endless hours talking about mono vs. stereo, or the difference between vg+ and vg++!
As I entered the cave I could hear a bubbling cauldron echoing through the entry chamber. It wasnât a cave at all, but a very well concealed record store!
But this was no ordinary record store! The walls glistened with some sort of green iridescence.A dense fog covered the floor.Things moved in that fogâŠbut Iâd rather not think of that right now.
It reminded me of some sort of sick butcher shop. There were no records to peruse! There were no record bins to browse through! There were no records to be seen anywhere in front of the counter!
Everything was behind the counter! You had to ask the proprietor what he had for sale! What manner of store was this?None I had ever talked to had ever been here before, so I did not know what to expect!
As I neared the counter, I realized someone else was in the âstoreâ with me!He was a mealy little fellow and he seemed very happy to be talking with the proprietor.
Ah, the proprietor. He was a site to behold. He appeared to be an amalgam of all I had come across before. He was stout, like a man who had just eaten a pile of sweaty kielbasa! He was dressed in the cheapest stuff imaginable.Clothing was like an afterthought to this strange perspiration covered man.He was balding, but appeared otherwise to be completely covered with matted damp looking hair.Even his ears had sprouted with the stuff!
Very disconcertingâŠ
It was then that I heard something that peaked my interest!
ââŠ.Pete MyersâŠâ
I moved closer, tripping over some sort of creepy crawly in the mist, trying to hear moreâŠ
âYeah, my bossâs name is Pete Myers, so I figured Iâd buy them for him!He would get a big kick out of that!â
âAhemâ, I said, as I moved closer to the counter.âWhatâs this about Pete Myers?â
âYou know him?!â Gasped the clueless stranger.
I was amazed at this personâs idiocy.âNo I donât know your boss, but Pete Myers was a radio DJ in Cleveland in the late 50âs.â
âOhâ, he said sadly. His face brightened as he continued;âWell, this gentleman has something called the Pete Myers astitates!â
I looked at him like he had two heads.âAstitates?Do you mean Acetates?âClearly this person had just stumbled into this place and didnât have a clue about anythingâŠ.
âACETATES!â grunted the proprietor, drool hanging from the corner of his mouth, his belly protruding over his dirty unwashed jeans.
âOh, YES, acetates, thatâs what they are! What fun this shop is!Can you believe I would stumble across something like this?Especially something that I could buy as a joke gift for my boss!? Its just delightful!â As he said this he clapped his hands in the most annoying manner.
I backed away not knowing if I should cry, or punch the little sniveling man in the mouth.
âHave you already bought them?â I asked wearily? Having been beaten to the punch so many times before, I expected the worst.
âActually, no, this fine gentlemen and I were just coming to terms.â
During this whole time the proprietor was staring dumbly, as is their want. The drool slowly elongating till it rested softly on his stained wife beater t-shirt.His glistening, beady eyes stared back⊠He almost looked like he could understand us.
âWell, I just might be interested in these âastitatesâ myselfâŠâ
âACETATES!â grunted the proprietor once again.
âYes, yes, acetates. What are you offering him?â I asked, as I jerked by thumb towards the proprietor.
The man opened his âfanny-packâ (my fingers shudder just typing the word) and peered inside.âWell, let me see what I have.â
The proprietor began sniffing and grunting at the air, his hands twitching uncontrollably. He could smell a bidding war beginning to brew. His mouth opened and closed as he breathed in and out.
Before the little man could say anymore, I asked the proprietor to see the actual acetates. He grunted his approval and shuffled off further behind the counter. He approached what appeared to be a black velvet curtain. He parted it with the wave of one big flabby hair covered arm and roared; âMaaaa, get me my purple record carrier!â
Before long he reappeared with 3 acetates all bearing the GOTHAM record label.
I couldnât believe my eyes. Here was something that, as far as I knew, had never been heard of before!3 of Pete Myersâs personal acetates! What could they be?What could be on them? What untold treasures could those black and oily crevices contain?
I picked up the first one.It said simply, CRYSTAL BALL.Hmm, what could that be?
The second: GIMMICK.It had a date of 2/29/60.Hmm, interesting. It must have been after Pete had left the Cleveland area to âmake it bigâ in New York City.
The third one read simply; UMUMH!, and was dated 10/13/61.
Now the proprietor was not the only one who was salivating in a most disturbing way.
I tried vainly to compose myself. It is important in times like these to keep a straight face (which was easy for me, since half of my face was concealed beneath my kerchief!).
âSo you want to buy the acetates. And I want to buy the acetates. What do you think we should do?â
âAUCTION!â Grunted the proprietor, as he slammed his flabby palm against the counter.Little bits of spittle landing on the stranger and I.
At this suggestion I grinned as I felt the bulge of money in my pocket.Money that I had saved for just such an encounter.
âOh dear!â Said the little man as he looked thru his change purse.âIt seems that I only have 120 American dollars!â
The proprietor bristled at the little man for showing his hand too soon!He looked at me expectantlyâŠ
I offered up a pittance more than the 120 offered by the little man.
The proprietor looked back at the little man, expecting a counter bidâŠ.
The little man cowered.âIf I give any more, I wonât have enough for bus fair to get back to the resort!â
He sighed and slowly turned to leave the store.Looking back once with the look of the defeated.
The proprietor looked at me as I took out my billfold and peeled off the 120 and change. His eyes gleaming in the green iridescence.
He pushed the acetates towards me.I carefully gathered them and got them ready for my return trip home.
over the years i've been slowly collecting songs the mad daddy used to play on his radio show...and from time to time i've posted here for you guys to download...
but today i stumbled across this blog site with a pretty great home made comp of songs the mad daddy used to play....
i haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but there are some hard to find tracks on here (and all the sound is pretty high quality...this guy's version of the apache by the chiefs is way better than mine!)
Hello Space/The Cat was definitely NOT done by Pete Myers. I
have not been able to find a reference to the record, but I believe that for a
while (in the 1980s or ‘90s I think) there was another artist who called
himself “The Mad Daddy” and was not connected in any way with the
original.

It was probably released in 1957 but I don’t know exactly
when he made the record. He played the flip side on his April 1, 1958 show.
“The Mad Daddy” is a completely different recording

Hello,
many years ago in the early eighties Lux Interior approached Ace
Records with a Mad daddy lp in mind. As a kid he used to tape the Mad
daddy's shows and he compiled a tape which he thought were the
highlights. The Greasy Chicken and Janie made A Monster were two of
the numbers. It was my job to find out the artists and which labels
they were on. One tape had two 45s by the Mad Daddy - The Joker 45
and Hello Space / The Cat. It includes a rap over Lazy Lester's Sugar
Coated Love and space music by Russ Garcia. I have the lp on london
records , I don't know the US label.

strikes me about it that it is somehow mad daddy related...
oh yeah, the song is called NEPTUNE...maybe he used it as

As far as I know there is no existing recording of Mad Daddy
hosting WJW-TV’s Shock Theatre so I have no idea whether or not it had a
theme song. He only did it for a few weeks as a summer replacement.

Please read the message below and then follow the link to add your name to a
petition seeking to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize. With
his lifetime of work for peace, the ecology and the rights of the powerless
and downtrodden, Pete would deserve the prize even if his concerts did not
model the utopian vision where all nations, religions, races, occupational
groups and ages join together in song.

I posted a petition on a site named petitionthem.com. The aim is to
persuade the American Friends Service Committee to nominate Pete Seeger
for the Nobel Peace Prize. I thought you would be interested in adding
your support. I'm asking everyone to circulate the petition information
to at least 5 other people asking them to notify 5 other people. Could
you each do that?
To read about the petition and to sign it just visit http://www.petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=3774
There is also a forum where you can talk about this petition and of
course many other worthy petitions that need your support. Overview of
this petition: -
Pete Seeger has been a crusader for Peace and Social Justice over the
course of his 83 year lifetime. As a prominent musician his songs,
messages and performance style have worked to engage other people,
particularly the youth, in causes to end the Vietnam war, ban nuclear
weapons, work for international solidarity, and ecological
responsibility. It is time that a cultural worker receives the
recognition that this work has great influence and global reach, that it
is not only a medium of entertainment but of education, compassion and
fraternity.

Has anyone been able to find these lately? About a year ago I found one
on Ebay, but missed bidding on it (no one else did either!). The guy
said it was a repro, but didn't matter to me. He was from Ohio, so I
figure it was as close as I was gonna get to picking up a 45 of the Mad

Anyone?

I don't know about the rarity of the postcard, but they were given out
as promotional items by WHK in 1959. If you check the Photos section
of this forum, you'll find a reproduction of the original photo along
with many others. There is also a cartoon postcard of his Lake Erie
jump which I have an original of.
