I always liked Smokey the Bear, and he has taught me there's one thing
you are supposed to do with forest fires - prevent them! That's why
it bothered
me a little when I read about a fire last summer in the Boundary Waters area
of Northern Minnesota. It was a slow moving fire that burned through about
3,000 acres of canoe country. What was unsettling was this. The Rangers did
nothing to fight it. They didn't even try. In fact, they called it "friendly fire."
Some of the quotes in the paper: "The fire is doing its job." "This is a prescribed
natural fire." Well, actually, they do
this quite a bit. I guess the fire releases
nutrients into the soil, and the deer and the moose thrive on that new growth
that comes after a blaze. And the wolves thrive on the deer and the moose,
of course. It's even good for the birds and their food supply. Now this is
interesting. There is a fire that destroys things, so it can make things new.
Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Acts 19:17-20. Now,
in the city of Ephesus the power of Jesus
has been dramatically displayed.
Satan has taken a visible beating there, and it says that the name of the Lord
Jesus was held in high honor. Then it goes on to say, "Many of those who
believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. A number who
had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.
When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to 50,000 drachmas.
In this way, the Word of the Lord spread widely, and grew in power." Now, that's
what you have to call a renewing fire. It's a fire that burns up your sin, and all the
props that have helped you do it. And the result? It says, things grew in power.
You see powerful Christianity always makes repentance a central issue. Ordinary
people release extraordinary power when they abandon the sin that's been holding
them back. This may explain why you've felt frustrated in your life with Christ lately;
why there doesn't seem to be much spiritual passion, or power, or result. There's
sin that you've not brought to the fire. See, we tend to be fairly casual about our sin.
We excuse it, we minimize it, we resign ourselves to it, we tolerate our sin, we cover it,
but Jesus doesn't take our sin casually. It killed Him. If you love Him, you've got to
destroy the things that destroyed Him.
In 1 Peter 2:24 it says, "He carried our sins in His own body on the tree that we might
die to sin, and live for righteousness." God calls us to deal with sin surgically - to abandon
it. Oh, we want the forgiveness, but we don't want the fire. But genuine repentance burns
your bridges to the influences that feed that sin. It makes things right with the people
that have been affected by it. It finds someone to be accountable to. It acts as if you're
never going to do it again.
There's so much more power
available for your life, but it's on the other side of true
repentance. Yes, there is fire that renews; that brings new life. And God may be calling
you right now, even through our time together, to come to that fire where you abandon
that sin once and for all. It's held you back long enough, and the fire of repentance is
friendly fire. And the same fire that cleanses you also has the power to launch you where
your life has never gone before. - - Ron Hutchcraft

I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [Jesus Christ]: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God."
That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell.
You must make your choice. Either this Man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse .... You can shut Him
up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.

False Foundations -
Three Of Hearts
Earlier this week, the cable network Bravo aired the documentary Three of Hearts: A Postmodern Family. The film is designed "to challenge conventional ideas of family," according to director Susan Kaplan.
Three of Hearts shows two gay men, Steven Margolin
and Sam Cagnina,
bringing a woman into their relationship. For several years, the director followed Steven and Sam—and the woman they called their "wife," Samantha Singh.
(Sam actually married her, presumably on behalf of both men.) We see them interact with their families, run a business, and have a daughter, Siena . We do not find out until later which man is her
father.
Significantly, at least two of the trio come from difficult family situations. In particular, Sam speaks movingly about what life was like
with his father in and out of prison. He confesses, "I chose [Steven and Samantha] as my parents. . . . I need someone to try to take care of me." All three are in therapy, and Sam's therapist thinks it is likely that as he matures, he may outgrow the relationship—an indication of the immature attitudes that got this relationship started in the first place.
But it is Steven who leaves after thirteen years, just before Samantha's second child is born. Now, battling over everything from
business arrangements to dog-care expenses, everybody has a different opinion of their former relationship. And Sam admits, "I think we were all building a house on false foundations."
Although Sam is helping Samantha raise both children, he has no legal rights to the little girl. Steven turns out to be Siena's biological father—but he has her only for a few days every month.
On top of it all, Sam and Samantha no longer have a sexual relationship. Though they are still married, Samantha calls the marriage a "technicality." On the film's website, Sam explains, "What we both want eventually is to live next door to each other raising our children together; we will both live with someone we love." Since Steven already has a new partner, this would give Siena six parental figures and three homes!
If your head is spinning, I don't blame you. It's hard, however, not to feel sorry
for these unhappy and disillusioned people—but it's also hard not to get upset with them for bringing children into such an inherently unstable situation. You have to wonder, what on earth were they thinking?
Ironically, the director and her subjects consider this a "political" film striking a blow against defenders of traditional marriage, and legislation like the federal marriage amendment. But if they're really proposing a mess like this as an alternative to traditional families, they are shooting themselves in the foot. The film makes you root for traditional marriage. If these confused people had had more stable families, they might not have grown into the kind of adults who mess up their kids' lives just to prove a point.
Although Bravo aired Three of Hearts earlier this week, it will probably air it again. If it does, this is once when I am going to suggest to you that you watch
what is meant as propaganda for "alternative" marriage. Get your friends and family to watch it too, because what they are going to see is what a wreck we make of our lives when we ignore God's plan for marriage and families. And those watching will gain a new understanding of why we must fight to protect and promote marriage. BREAKPOINT with Charles Colson & Mark Earley
Not far into John's Gospel, Jesus was gaining enemies at every turn. He used a whip to drive men and livestock out of the temple. He chose the holy Sabbath to heal a man who could not walk. But it was because of his words that they sought all the more to kill him. To their anger over the Sabbath healing, Jesus simply replied, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working" (John
5:17).
To the person well-versed in biting comebacks and fatal rhetoric, these words don't seem at all like fighting words. But to Jews who knew a history of combating (and failing to combat) the polytheistic influences of surrounding nations, Jesus uttered what seemed the most blasphemous notion possible. He was calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Even so, the notion of God as Father was not a new concept. Even to the Jews who took offense at Jesus's words that day, God was understood as Father in the sense that He is creator, that He is Lord, that He is protector
and forgiver. Fourteen times in the Old Testament God is spoken of as
Father, and each instance depicts a sacred glimpse of divine fatherhood.
But here, Jesus adds to the notion of Father an element of intimacy and uniqueness with himself. Nowhere in Palestinian Judaism is God addressed by an individual as "my father."(1) Jesus's use of such an title--and elsewhere the familiar "abba" or daddy--reveals the very basis of his communion with God, a communion he boldly offers his followers:
"This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven'" (Matthew 6:9-10).
It is easy to approach as ordinary the extraordinary mystery that Christ is Son and God is Father.
"Heavenly Father" and "only Son" are phrases
I rarely wrestle with. All too often I overlook the vast allowance of being able to call God my own Father. It is not a quality inherent in all religions (it is, in fact, an obstruction to some, an enigma to others). That you and I can approach God as Father is the unique and pressing
gift of the Son.
I was moved recently by the profundity of this gift as I listened to the stories of a man named K.K. Devaraj. Reverend Deveraj works among the discarded lives of Mumbai, India. For 16 years, the ministry he founded has fostered life-saving outreach to orphaned children, drug addicts, and prostitutes. To each one he offers the same message as many times as necessary: "Whenever you are ready, your Father's house is waiting." Often, he offers for years.
Yet
such is the startling, radical message of Christ. There is a Father who knows you by name, in whose house you are invited to be who you are--to live and work and play as He created you. "In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you" (John 14:20). There is a Father who waits, who longs to gather his children together and take them into His arms. Some will be transformed, some will be broken, some will refuse
to be gathered. But He offers us a place, positioned within the greater offer of adoption. He is our Father whose name is hallowed and whose
kingdom we seek, whom we know through the Son and worship as children. His name is Abba.

There is simply no historic foundation for the position that the
Framers intended to build the 'wall of separation' that was
constitutionalized in Everson. The 'wall of separation be-

history,
a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging.
It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.

"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." -- President Abraham Lincoln
We can all
pray. We all should pray. We should ask the fulfillment of God’s will. We should ask for courage, wisdom, for the quietness of soul which comes alone to them who place their lives in His hands. -- President Harry Truman
When there is a lack of honor in government, the morals of the whole people are poisoned. There is no such thing as a no-man's land between honesty and dishonesty. Our strength lies in spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to evil. Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance with evil, or by public tolerance of scandalous ehavior. --President Herbert Hoover
Our faith teaches that there is no safer reliance than upon the God of our fathers, who has so singularly favored the American people in every national
trial, and who will not forsake us so long as we obey His commandments and walk humbly in His footsteps. -- President William McKinley
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State… --President Thomas Jefferson
The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life
which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation. America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture. -- President Woodrow Wilson
In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good, I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not less than my own; nor those of my fellow-citizens at large, less than either. No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. -- George Washington
There are two prayers that I love to say—the first is the Lord’s Prayer,
and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a
child’s prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep,” and I love to say that because it suits me. I have been repeating it every night for many years past, and
I say it yet, and I expect to say it my last night on earth… --President John Quincy Adams
Our strength lies in spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to evil. Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance
with evil, or by public tolerance of scandalous behavior. --President Herbert Hoover
We are all called upon by the highest obligations of duty to renew our thanks and our devotion to our Heavenly
Parent, who has continued to vouchsafe to us the eminent blessings which surround us and who has so signally crowned the year with His goodness. If we find ourselves increasing beyond example in numbers, in strength, in wealth, in knowledge, in everything which promotes human and social happiness, let us ever remember our dependence for all these on the protecting and merciful dispensations of Divine Providence. --President John Tyler, December 7, 1841
Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue; and if this cannot be inspired into our people in a greater measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers and the forms
of government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty. They will only exchange tyrants and tyrannies. --President John Adams
Whereas, it is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon… --Abraham Lincoln
Without the assistance of the Divine Being who ever attended him, I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him who can go with me, and remain with you, and be everywhere for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell. --Abraham
Lincoln
Without God, there is no virtue, because there's no prompting of the conscience. Without God, we're mired in the material, that flat world that tells us only what the senses perceive. Without God, there is a coarsening of the society. And without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under. --President Ronald Reagan
Mighty God…I yield Thee humble and hearty thanks that thou has preserved
me from the danger of the night past, and brought me to the light of the day, and the comforts thereof, a day which is consecrated to Thine own service and for Thine own honor. Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that
I may not do mine own works, but wait on thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me. --George Washington, in his prayer journal
No country has been so much favored, or should acknowledge with deeper reverence the manifestations of the divine protection. An all wise Creator directed and guarded us in our infant struggle for freedom and has constantly watched over our surprising progress until we have become
one of the great nations of the earth. --President James K. Polk
Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure to our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice,
peace and union—a union depending not upon the constraint of force, but upon the loving devotion
of a free people; and that all things may be so ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generation. --President Rutherford B. Hayes
I only look to the gracious protection of the Divine Being whose strengthening support I humbly solicit, and whom I fervently pray to look down upon us all. May it be among the dispensations of His Providence to bless our beloved country with honors and length of days; may her ways be pleasantness, and all her paths peace. --President Martin VanBuren
Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the
teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise ourselves. --President Theodore Roosevelt
The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty
God. --Abraham Lincoln
The men who established this government had faith in God and sublimely trusted in Him. They besought His counsel and advice in every step of their progress. And so it has been ever since; American history abounds in instances of this trait of piety, this sincere reliance on a Higher Power in all great trials in our national affairs. --President William McKinley
“Finally, it is my fervent prayer to that Almighty Being…that He will so overrule all my intentions and actions and inspire the hearts of my fellow-citizens that we may be preserved from dangers of all kinds and continue forever a united happy people.” --President Andrew Jackson
"When I left Springfield I asked the people to pray for me. I was not a Christian. When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the
graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ. Yes, I do love Jesus." --Abraham Lincoln
Oh! Almighty and Everlasting God, Creator of Heaven, Earth and the Universe: Help me to be, to think, to act what is right, because it is right; make me truthful, honest and honorable in all things; make me intellectually honest for the sake of right and honor and without thought of reward to me. Give me the ability to be charitable, forgiving and patient with my fellowmen - help me to understand their motives and their shortcomings -- even as Thou understandest mine! Amen, Amen, Amen. --President Harry Truman
"For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to
withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world." --John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1630

The Bible claims to be the Word of the only true God. In addition to historical, archaeological, and scientific proofs, there are numerous internal proofs. No such evidences exist for other "sacred writings." The Bible was written during 1,600 years by 40 prophets, most of whom lived in diverse cultures, at different times in history, yet who never contradict but complement each other. For the Qur'an, Muslims must take the word of Muhammad, just as the Book of Mormon rests solely upon Joseph Smith's word. But every biblical prophet is confirmed by 39 other prophets. - - Dave Hunt

Our son had just moved to an Indian reservation to work among the young people
there and for a short time, he stayed rent-free at the home of a Native American family.
Well, sort of rent-free. One day the man of the house asked our son to help him with a
little plumbing problem. Our suburban boy said, "Plumbing? Sure. Where can I find a
plunger?" He was informed that no plunger would be needed, so apparently it's going
to be easier than he thought. Right? Wrong. His host took him out in the backyard and
introduced him to
a septic pond where his job was to try to clean out a stopped-up pipe.
In order to find it, our son had to reach into this gross stuff up to his shoulder. Then he
got to experience the contents of that septic pond splashing all over him as he hung over
the water, pushing a rod up and down through the blocked pipe. Yuk! He said when he was
finished, he had one thing and only one thing on his mind - a shower. He called and he
summarized his experience very simply: "I've never felt so dirty in my life, and it's never
felt so good to be clean."
Feeling clean. That's a feeling someone who's listening right now could use because
you've felt dirty long enough. We all know those feelings because we've all done things
that we're ashamed of; we've done some things we thought we'd never do, we've failed to
do some things we should have done. Too many times, we've hurt people we care about.
There are these dark secrets that haunt us and even some
things we're hooked on that we
can't stop doing. We feel dirty inside, and we don't know how to get clean.
That's why our word for today from the Word of God is such good news. It's written to
people who know what dirty feels like. In 1 Corinthians 6, beginning with verse 9, the writer
describes people who have messed with sex, both heterosexual and homosexual, people
who have ripped off others, who've been selfish and greedy, who've had drinking problems,
along with backstabbers and cheaters. Then comes this startling statement: "That is what
some of you were." Were? How does that happen? How do dirty people get clean?
Here's how. "You were washed ... you were justified" - that means made right with God -
"in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God." God gave them a spiritual
shower because of Jesus. But how can a God whose perfect just erase all my sins from
His book? "In the name of the Lord Jesus" it says. That's because Jesus had all the dirt
of my life dumped on Him when He died on the cross. In the Bible's words, "He carried
our sins in His body on the tree." (1 Peter 2:24) Just think of Jesus absorbing all the guilt,
and the shame, and the hell of every angry thing you've ever done; every dirty thing,
every selfish thing, every deceitful thing, every hurting thing. That's how much He
loves you. That's how much He wants to forgive you so you can have the unspeakable
joy of being clean and the guarantee of being with Him in His heaven forever.
As Jesus was dying on that cross, He said of those who nailed Him there, "Father,
forgive them." That's what He wants to say to God about you today, "Father, forgive
him. Forgive her." if you will take what He died to give you. No religion can erase
your sin from God's book. Only Jesus can do that, because only Jesus paid the
death penalty that we deserve. The sinless One became dirty so you could
become
clean. He took your hell so you could live in His heaven.
The man on the cross next to Jesus, hearing His offer of forgiveness, said to Him,
"Remember me when You come into Your kingdom." (Luke 23:42) That's what you need
to do - to reach out to the Great Forgiver and ask Him to forgive all the sinning you've
ever done. If you do, He said, "I will remember your sin no more." (Hebrews 8:12) You grab
Him in total faith as the only One who can rescue you from your sin.
If you're tired of dirty, if you're ready to finally be clean inside, would you tell Jesus
that? Tell Him you're done doing things your way and you're His from now on because
no one loves you like He does. The day I opened my heart to Jesus like that, someone
took time to explain to me exactly how to get started in a relationship with Him. I'd love
to do that for you. That's why I've made our website a place where you can read or listen
to a simple explanation of beginning with Jesus. Or call for my little booklet, Yours For
Life, at 877-741-1200 (FREE).
There's nothing like a shower when you feel dirty. Jesus stands ready to wash away
today the dirt of your lifetime. It feels so good to be clean! - - Ron Hutchcraft

I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about
Him [Jesus Christ]: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God."
You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend
to.

Didache &
Human Life
If I were to tell you about an ancient document that sheds fresh light on Christianity, your first reaction might be to run for the hills. Most of us have had just about all we can handle of the spurious "Gospel of Judas"
and The Da Vinci Code, right?
Well, I'm not talking about The Da Vinci Code. Unlike the Gnostic gospels that inspired the novel, the ancient document I'm talking about sheds some real light on Christianity. It's called the Didache, and it's one of the earliest non-scriptural Christian writings, written toward the end of the first century. As Christianity Today explains in an excellent article last month, "While no one believes that any of the twelve apostles wrote it, scholars agree that the work is a faithful transmission of the apostles' teaching, intended primarily for the training of Gentile believers."
So this is no mysterious subject of an ancient conspiracy, just a practical guide to discipleship and obedience—maybe not as thrilling to many readers and moviegoers, but a lot more important.
Specifically, I came across the following passage:
"There are two ways, a way of life and a way of death; there is a great difference between them . . . in accordance with the precept of the teaching 'You shall not kill,' you shall not put a child to death by abortion nor kill
it once it is born. . . . The way of death is this; they show no compassion
for the poor. They do not
suffer with the suffering. They do not acknowledge their Creator, they kill their children and by abortion cause God's creatures to perish; they drive away the needy, oppress the suffering; they are advocates of the rich and unjust judges of the poor; they are filled with every sin. May you be ever guiltless of all these sins!"
That's pretty powerful language, condemning the brutal practices of the Romans and of the pagan societies. But what really caught my attention
is that this demonstrates so clearly that the sanctity of all human life is an issue that goes back to the very beginnings of the Church. That ought to
be news to those who slam the so-called "religious right" as if abortion
were some issue we just recently latched onto for political power. To the contrary, this struggle against the culture of death is an ancient one, going back two thousand years. The Didache wisely identifies the unborn
with the poor, and condemns the rich and unjust judges who oppress them.
Fascinating, isn't it? All the hoopla over the "Gospel of Judas," which was discredited in the second century. The world, you see, wants to believe all kinds of deep dark secrets that might shake the foundations of the faith. But here comes a genuine document—no attention paid to it—but what it
proves is the validity of the biblical account.
The Didache, the Church's first written guide for discipleship,
may not contain ear-tingling, earth-shattering revelations like all the other recent sensational disclosures, but it contains something much more important:
a reminder of the Church's great heritage and a call to our generation to
be as faithful as our ancestors were in protecting life and the weak and
the defenseless. BREAKPOINT with Charles Colson & Mark Earley
On any given week, three to five biographies make The New York Times best-sellers list for non-fiction. Though historical biographies have changed with time, human interest in the genre is long-standing. The first known biographies were commissioned by ancient rulers to assure records of their accomplishments. The Old Testament Scriptures, detailing the lives of patriarchs, prophets,
and kings, are also some of the earliest biographies in existence. Throughout the Middle Ages, biographical histories were largely in the hands of monks; lives of martyrs and church fathers were recorded with the intention of edifying readers for years to come. Over time and with the invention of the printing press, biographies became increasingly influential and widely read, portraying a larger array of lives and their stories.
The popularity of the genre is understandable. As Thomas Carlyle writes, "Biography is the most universally pleasant and profitable of all reading."
Such books are pleasant because reading the accounts of men and women in history, we find ourselves living in many places; they are profitable because in doing so, we hear fragments of
our own stories.
The questions and thoughts we considered our own suddenly appear
before us in the life of another. The afflictions we find wearying are given
meaning in the story of one who overcame much, or the life of one who
found hope in the midst of loss. Perhaps we move toward biography
because we seem to know that
life is too short to learn only by our own
experience.
As Christians we are called to move similarly. The most direct attempt
in Scripture to define faith is done so by the writer of Hebrews. The eleventh chapter begins, "Now faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see" (11:1). It is a definition that has always somewhat eluded me, and I was thankful to read I'm not alone. John Wesley once observed of the same words, "There appears to be a depth in them which I am in no wise able to fathom." But moving from this definition of faith, the writer of Hebrews immediately expands upon the weighty statement with a list of
people who lived "sure of hope" and "certain of the unseen." From Noah and Abraham, to Rahab and saints left unnamed, we find faith moving across the pages of history, the gift of God sparkling in the eyes of the faithful, the hope by which countless lives were guided. In this brief gathering of biographies, the writer seems to tell us that faith is understood functionally as much as philosophically, and that our own
faith is more fully understood by looking at the lives of the faithful.
At the end of his compelling list, the writer of Hebrews concludes: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (12:1). The lives of those who
followed Christ before us urge us onward, strengthening our hearts with stories of faith, stirring our minds at the thought of God's universal sway, reminding us that He moves in our biographies and yet beyond them.
Amidst the chronicles of kings and kingdoms in some of the earliest recorded biographies, we are given this promise: "For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are
fully committed to him" (2 Chronicles 16:9). Moved by the hearts of the faithful, may we be moved further into the arms of God.

"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." -- President Abraham Lincoln
We can all pray. We all should pray. We should ask the
fulfillment of God’s will.
Our faith teaches that there is no safer reliance than upon the God of our fathers, who has so singularly favored the American people in every national trial, and who will not forsake us so
long as we obey His commandments and walk humbly in His footsteps.
It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way
of peace and salvation.
There are two prayers that I love to say—the first is the Lord’s Prayer,
and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a child’s prayer: “Now I lay me down to
sleep,” and I love to say that because it suits me.
We are all called upon by the highest obligations of duty to renew our thanks and our devotion to our Heavenly Parent, who has continued to vouchsafe
to us the eminent blessings which surround us and who has so signally crowned the year with His goodness.
The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue; and if this cannot be inspired into our people in a greater measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers and the forms
of government, but they will
not obtain a lasting liberty.
--Abraham Lincoln
Without God,
there is no virtue, because there's no prompting of the conscience.
Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that I may not do mine own works, but wait on
thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me.
Polk
Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure to our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice, peace and union—a union depending not upon
the constraint of force, but upon the loving devotion
of a free people; and that all things may be so ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generation.
Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven
and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise ourselves. --President Theodore Roosevelt
The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. --Abraham Lincoln
The men who
established this government had faith in God and sublimely trusted in Him.
But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and
there consecrated myself to Christ.
So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be

"America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness, which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scriptures. Part of the destiny of Americans lies in their daily perusal of this great book of revelations. That if they would see

For Christians, the life and death of Jesus are the ultimate expressions of love, and the supreme demonstrations of God's mercy, faithfulness, and redemption. Since Christ's miraculous Resurrection on Easter, more than 2,000 years ago, Christians have expressed joy and gratitude for this wondrous sacrifice and for God's promise of freedom for the oppressed, healing for the brokenhearted, and salvation. --President George W. Bush
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the
gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." --Patrick Henry (original member of the Continental Congress)

The Bible claims to be the Word of the only true God. In addition to historical, archaeological, and scientific proofs, there are
numerous internal proofs.

Our sons had them when they were little - action figures of their TV heroes. Every new
generation of kids has their action figures: GI Joe, Superman, Star Wars, X-Men. But recently
I caught a story on a TV news show about the best action figure idea I've ever heard of. They
were talking about a company, the name of which I didn't catch, who are making custom action
figures dressed in contemporary combat dress. It's especially for the children of Americans
serving in Iraq. Guess whose face is on the action figure? Your Dad!
What a cool idea: your soldier Dad as your action figure - your father as your hero. Actually,
that ought to be the goal of every father in the world - to be his son or daughter's ultimate hero.
And that's not so much about military exploits or what title or position he holds. The hardest place
on earth to be a hero is at home. Not at the office, or at the club, or in the community, not at church -
at home!
That's where it really counts. That's where they really know the real you. Not your image at church
or in the community, not your awards, your connections, your bank account. Kids don't care about
all that stuff. They care about the kind of man you are, just like God does. Kids tend to care about
what God cares about in a man - character. How he treats people most of the time. How unselfish
he is.
King David seemed to understand where real heroism is demonstrated. In
1 Chronicles 16:43,
our word for today from the Word of God, He has just come from some great military victories
and spiritual milestones, but the Bible says, "David returned home to bless his family." The
extent to which a man does that on a daily basis is the true measure of how much of a hero
he really is.
And how can you be a hero where it counts the most? Let's start with the Five "As" of a Great
Dad. Let's start with
Attendance. You're there for the moments in their life that really matter to them.
They're always taking attendance, and they're marking you present or absent for those times when
they measure your love by your presence. Then there's Attention. A Dad is his son or daughter's
hero when they offer their attention on a regular basis. Not when they have to do all kinds of
contortions to get your attention, but when you offer it on a daily basis. That means focusing
on them mentally and emotionally before you walk in the door. Here's
the goal: every member
of your family gets all of you, your focused attention, at least once a day.
Authority: that's a big part of being a hero at home, too. Consistent authority; authority that's
fair, impartial, that enforces consistent boundaries and consistent penalties. Authority that walks
what it talks. Then there's Affection: a Dad whose son or daughter doesn't have to wonder if they're
loved because he tells them all the time, even when they're pretty unlovable. Because the times when
your child is the least loveable; that's the time when they need your love the most! One other "A" of
a great Dad is Affirmation. You don't hammer them all the time with what's wrong with them. Believe
me, they already know. What they need from their father is consistent praise for what's good about
them; their personal strengths, their personal abilities, their positive qualities. If you can't see them,
they never will. And a Dad who raises a child who feels like they're never good enough is
no hero at
all.
The Apostle Paul sums up the mission of a great Dad in three action words in 1 Thessalonians 2:12.
He talks about a father who deals with his children, "...encouraging, comforting and urging..." That's
what every child needs. That's what God created a father to be. When a man doesn't run from the hard
work of a happy home, when he gives it his best, he deserves an action figure with him on it because
he's a hero where it really counts - at
home.

Either this Man was,
and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse .... You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.

The Rockies' Way Defining 'Better'
Since entering the Major Leagues in 1993, the
Colorado Rockies have made
the playoffs only once. Last year, they had the second-worst record in Major League baseball, and the previous few seasons were not much better.
It's clear that things had to change, starting with getting better ballplayers. But what makes the Rockies different from other baseball franchises is how the Rockies define better.
Obviously, the Rockies' primary concern, like everybody else's, is with the player's performance on the field. There's no escaping the importance of hitting, pitching, and fielding. However, CEO Charlie Monfort and General Manager Dan O'Dowd don't stop there. They have made the
Rockies one
of the few major league franchises organized on specifically Christian principles.
As O'Dowd told USA Today, "We try to do the best job we can to get people with the right sense of moral values . . ." To that end, prospective Rockies are interviewed to see if they are compatible with the Rockies' approach.
Once players join the Rockies they put them in an environment that reinforces those values. "Quotes from Scripture are posted in the weight room. Chapel service is packed on Sundays. Prayer and fellowship groups
each Tuesday are well-attended. It's not unusual for the front office executives to pray together." And you won't find pornographic magazines or music with obscene lyrics in the clubhouse.
Now don't think the Rockies only sign Christian players or that non-Christians on the team are under pressure to become Christians. O'Dowd says, "I know some of the guys who are Christians, but I can't tell you who is and who isn't."
If you're wondering why you have not heard about the "Rockies' Way," it's because they want it that way. The USA Today article was the first time the team had publicly discussed their attempt to build a Christian-influenced franchise.
As O'Dowd told USA Today, "The last thing we
want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs." That's probably inevitable, however, since Christianity, with its specific truth claims, goes against the grain of our culture.
It doesn't matter that, as several Rockies told USA Today, "Nobody is going to push their beliefs on each other or make judgments" in the locker room. Nor does it matter that the Rockies aren't saying that you have to be a Christian to have a good character. For critics, such as a well-known ESPN commentator, what matters is that non-Christians may feel "excluded."
Oh, come on. Remember these same critics regularly report on the crimes and misdemeanors of professional athletes. And remember that the most cherished record in sports may eventually be broken by a man whom everyone believes cheated and broke the law to do it.
Against that backdrop, professional sports need all the Rockies and Albert
Pujols—the Cardinals' slugger—that it can get. It needs reminders that it's possible to excel both as a player and as a human being. It needs the kind of examples that Christians are called to provide.
I'm a die-hard, longsuffering Red Sox fan, but from now on, I'll be secretly cheering on the Rockies. There are some things "better" than batting average. BREAKPOINT with Charles Colson & Mark Earley
Helen Roseveare was an English missionary from 1953 to 1973 in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). She used her skills as a doctor to minister to the many physical needs in a politically unstable country, founding hospitals and a medical school, while at the same time sharing her faith with people who had known great suffering.
Throughout her ministry Roseveare found herself in need of financial support to carry on her work. In spite of many pressing needs, early in her ministry she established the practice of tithing (giving ten percent) of any gift that came in, giving it back to God in faith.
One morning in her first year of clinic work, she slipped away to her house, hoping for ten minutes of quiet. She found on her doorstep a
man with his wife and two small children. He informed her that he had been sent to her for work. She told him that she didn't have any work for him, and that he should inquire of the missionary down the road who might hire him. The man adamantly insisted that he would work for her, and informed her that he had been cooking for missionaries for eighteen years. When Roseveare asked why he had left his previous employers, he rolled up the sleeve of his shirt. Roseveare recognized at once that the man was infected with leprosy.
The young missionary doctor's heart sank. She felt a deep conviction that this man's coming meant God wanted her to begin a new work for the treatment of lepers. She was not afraid of leprosy, but the stigma the disease carried meant they would need separate facilities, costing more money and more of her already scarce time. Yet though she
clearly could see the cost that this work would entail, Roseveare believed that if God wanted it to go forward, He would provide the resources. In faith, she hired the man named Aunzo to be her cook.
They built a small mud-and-thatch building to serve as a leprosy clinic, and sent off for medicine, bandages, and equipment. The supplies came with a bill for 4,320 Belgian Congo francs, money that Roseveare did not have. She prayed that God would provide the money, then slipped the bill into her Bible.
The mission had a strict policy that all bills must be paid by the end of the month. As the month's end drew near, Roseveare expected God to provide the needed amount, but no funds appeared. As the first day of the next month dawned, Roseveare went to work discouraged and confused.
At lunch time, Aunzo greeted her with a large brown envelope. It had
been delivered the previous day to a different missionary by mistake! Inside the envelope was money that came to the sum of 4,800 francs. Roseveare quickly subtracted the tithe in her head, which left 4,320 francs, the exact amount needed to pay the bill for the supplies. She writes:
"The total was made up of three gifts, from an unknown couple in North America, from two prayer partners in Northern Ireland, and from a Girl Crusaders' Union class in southeast England. The North American gift had been on the way some four months, transferred from our Philadelphia office to the London office, from London to Brussels, Brussels to Leopoldville (Kinshasa), and finally upcountry from Leopoldville to Paulis (Isiro). Every transfer involved a certain percentage cost. At the end, the three gifts had arrived together to make the exact sum needed, and two of the gifts were designated: 'for
your leprosy work'-and I did not have a leprosy work when the money was actually given!" (1)
God does not always work so neatly and obviously, but extraordinary provisions such as this one serve as a reminder that, "your Father knows what you need before you ask him" (Matthew 6:8). God had a leprosy clinic in mind long before Roseveare thought of it, and he put it in the hearts of his children to give the money for that work. In the days to come, days which would bring scarcity, hard labor, and very real danger, this was a promise that Helen Roseveare could keep close to her heart. Even as
you read this, God is anticipating your needs and making provision for them. You can bring them to him with joyful anticipation that He is expecting you.

There is simply no historic foundation for the position that the
Framers intended to build the 'wall of separation' that was
constitutionalized in Everson. The 'wall of separation

a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging.
It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.

In 1796 the US Supreme Court issued this ruling, "By our form

petitioned to separate Christian principles from government,
in 1853 the House Judiciary Committee issued their formal report, including these words: "In this age there is no substitute
for Christianity. This was the religion of the founders of the republic,
and they expected it
to be the religion of their dependents. The
great vital, conservative elements in our system is the belief of
our people in the pure doctrines and divine truths of the gospel

The Roman emperor Diocletian, following an edict in 303 A.D.,
failed to stamp the Bible out. The French Revolution could not
crush it with secular philosophy (Rousseau, one of its heroes,
converted to Christianity). The Communists failed to stamp it
out with atheism and political ideology. One might well ask why
this book has been banned, burned, and bludgeoned with such
animosity and scorn. The great Reformation hero John Calvin
responds in this way: "Whenever people slander God's

God designed humans to want to believe in something.
That's the image of God that is in us. But as G. K.
Chesterton famously put it, when we reject the God
of the Bible, we don't believe in nothing; we believe
in everything -- including Little Green Men.

Dear Howdy, Indeed I am a faithful Tarheel*, having both MA and Ph.D. from their fine chemistry department. But that doesn't keep me from getting a great kick out of the humor propagated by what appears to me to be a pack of wolves!!**
SERIOUSLY, THE HUMOR IS GREAT FUN BUT MY MAIN ATTRACTION WAS TO THE CONSERVATIVE MORAL AND POLITICAL STANCE THAT SEEMED TO CHARACTERIZE THE FIRST ISSUE I SAW. INCIDENTALLY (HE SAYS ACCIDENTALLY!), it was sent to me by a friend, so I really didn't "hear about you" at all, and still haven't. All I know is what has
come in the two issues of the Newsletter I have
seen. The best to you.

"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." --
President Abraham Lincoln
We can all pray. We all should pray.
Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance with evil, or by public
tolerance of scandalous ehavior. --President Herbert Hoover
Our faith teaches that there is no safer reliance than upon the God of our fathers, who has so singularly favored the American people in every national trial, and who will not forsake us so long as we obey His commandments and walk humbly in His footsteps. -- President William McKinley
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation
between Church and State… --President Thomas Jefferson
The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation.
George Washington
There are two prayers that I love to say—the first is the Lord’s Prayer,
and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a child’s prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep,” and I love to say that because it suits me.
We are all called upon by the highest obligations of duty to renew our thanks and our devotion to our Heavenly Parent, who has continued to vouchsafe to us the eminent blessings which surround us and who has so signally crowned the year with His goodness. If we find ourselves increasing beyond example in numbers, in strength, in wealth, in knowledge, in everything which promotes human and social happiness, let us ever remember our dependence for all these on the protecting and merciful dispensations of Divine Providence. --President John Tyler, December 7, 1841
Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely
stand.
--Abraham Lincoln
Mighty God…I yield Thee humble and hearty thanks that thou has preserved
me from
the danger of the night past, and brought me to the light of the day, and the comforts thereof, a day which is consecrated to Thine own service and for Thine own honor. Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that I may not do mine own works, but wait on thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me.
Polk
Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure to our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice, peace and union—a union depending not upon the constraint of force, but upon the loving devotion
of a free people; and that all things may be so ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generation. --President Rutherford B. Hayes
I only look to the gracious protection of the Divine Being whose strengthening support I humbly solicit, and whom I fervently pray to look down upon us all. May it
be among the dispensations of His Providence to bless our beloved country with honors and length of days; may her ways be pleasantness, and all her paths peace. --President Martin VanBuren
Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise ourselves. --President Theodore Roosevelt
The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly
enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.
“Finally, it is my fervent prayer to that Almighty Being…that He will so overrule all my intentions and actions and inspire the hearts of my fellow-citizens that we may be preserved from dangers of all kinds and continue forever a united happy
people.” --President Andrew Jackson
"When I left Springfield I asked the people to pray for me. I was not a Christian. When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ.
--President Harry
Truman
"For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world." --John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1630

"The whole hope of human progress is suspended on the ever
growing influence of the Bible." - W.H. Seward (Secretary of State)
"America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness, which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scriptures. Part of the destiny of Americans lies in their daily perusal of this great book of revelations. That if they would see America free and pure they will make their own spirits free and pure by this baptism of the Holy Spirit." --President Woodrow Wilson
For Christians, the life and death of Jesus are the ultimate expressions of love, and the supreme demonstrations of God's mercy, faithfulness, and redemption. Since Christ's miraculous Resurrection on Easter, more than 2,000 years ago, Christians have expressed joy and gratitude for this wondrous sacrifice and for God's promise of freedom for the
oppressed, healing for the brokenhearted, and salvation. --President George W. Bush
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." --Patrick Henry (original member of the Continental Congress)

The Bible claims to be the Word of the only true God.

I'm on the road again so it had to be a fast food lunch today. I keep the nutrition
guides from several of those fast food places, even if "fast food nutrition guide" might
sound like an oxymoron. I try to think calories before I order because my food too often
goes from a moment on the lips to forever on the hips. Interesting thing about the food
we eat, the same meal can turn into fat or turn into energy. It depends on what
you do
after you eat it!
If you exercise, what you consume turns into energy. If you don't exercise, it turns
into fat. Actually, that's how it works with spiritual food, too. Many of us are consuming
a lot of Bible input, and we're full of sermons, tapes, CDs, videos, radio programs, and
Bible studies, but we're just accumulating information. And God has a lot of spiritually
overweight children because we
don't do anything with what we're learning.
But when you read what God says about His Word to us, it's clear that the purpose of
reading it is to change things in your life, not just to know things in your head. Joshua 1:8,
our word for today from the Word of God is a good example. Speaking of His Word, God says,
"Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that
you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."
Notice, when you read something from God,
it's supposed to show up in three places. First,
in your mind. "Meditate on it." The Hebrew verb here suggests a cow chewing its cud; going
over it until you've chewed the meaning out of it. This isn't just gulping down a couple of verses
like spiritual vitamins. And it isn't about how much you read. It's about how much you let God's
words read you. Sometimes it's better just to read a few verses two or three times, asking yourself
questions about
what it means and how it should affect something you're doing.
Then, God's Word is supposed to be in your mouth. What helps you make it real is putting into
words to someone else what God said to you in His Word today. Each day, you try to share with
someone what God communicated to you through His Word. Ultimately, God's Word is supposed
to be, not only in your mind and your mouth, but in your life. We meditate so that we may be, in
Joshua's words, "careful to do everything written in it." You're not supposed to just factualize what
God says, you're supposed to actualize what God says by consciously putting it into practice in
some part of your life today. You are reading to change!
So, as you read, ask yourself two questions: "What is God saying here?" And "What am I going
to do differently today because He said it?" God's Holy Spirit knows all about God's Word and all
about your life. Each day ask God to show you how to bring the two together. Each night, before
you go to sleep, you should be able to
measure a specific difference in your day because of how
you put into practice something God told you through His Word. Here's something that will help
you do that: keep a Jesus-journal. That's just a notebook where you put into words what God said
to you and what you're going to do differently because He did. What you're doing is turning spiritual
nutrition into energy and growth instead of just spiritual fat.
This is the road to something better than the roller coaster faith you get from basing your relationship
with Christ on Christian events or spiritual highs. This is the road to following Jesus consistently,
each new day. I know that's what your heart's been hungry for. It's about getting a life, not just getting
a high, because you've graduated from just reading the Bible for information to reading it for transformation.

He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of
Hell.
You must make your choice. Either this Man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse .... You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.

Giving Parents A Break TiVo Helps Out
Kids are revealing everything about themselves to complete strangers over the Internet on MySpace. The TV networks are suing to keep the FCC from cracking down on indecency. And ingenious minds are making it easier than ever to access porn, by way of cell phones and iPods.
It seems as though technology is always working against us. The more innovations and inventions go on the market, the harder parents have to fight to protect their kids from a steady stream of smut, violence, and even sexual predators.
But that gives us all the more reason to celebrate when we find technology that can
actually benefit our families. My friend James Ackerman, a Centurion and an expert in communications, recently told me about one such development that I think is a great idea, something that can help make parents' lives a lot easier.
Many of you are probably familiar with TiVo, the television recording system. TiVo has now unveiled a new product called KidZone, designed specifically to help parents find and record family-friendly programming and to block kids from finding not-so-friendly programming.
The way KidZone works is simple, which I think makes it especially appealing to busy parents who, if you're like me, don't have time to decipher pages of instructions. What you do is pre-approve the shows you want your kids to watch. The TiVo itself gives recommendations for family-friendly shows. Also, three other respected organizations with which TiVo has partnered
-
the Parents' Choice Foundation, Common Sense Media, and the Parents
Television Council—provide their own lists of recommendations.
If you want, you can use the TV ratings system by setting the program to record only shows with certain ratings, or you can find out which shows the FCC has designated "Educational and Informational" and set it to record those. And you can make
certain exceptions to these pre-approved lists,
if there are any shows among them that you would rather not record.
However you make your choices, the program will automatically record them. And when you put your TiVo in "safe mode," protected by a password, then only those shows that you pre-approved for your kids will appear.
As TiVo explains in a press release, and I concur, this program is a big improvement on the V-Chip. First of all, I've met very few people who were actually able to figure out how to use the V-Chip properly. Also, the V-Chip works only by blocking certain shows; it doesn't help
parents select good programming, the way KidZone does.
The KidZone program is a way to do what I think we Christians really need to d be in the world but not of it. This helps our kids not to ignore the media altogether, which could limit their sphere of influence in a media-crazy world, but rather to look at the media with discernment and to make wise choices.
It's good news and an encouraging sign when a leader in the technology industry makes promotion of family-friendly programming a high priority.
It would be strange to grow up knowing that your life is set apart.
Of course, to a small extent this is the experience of many children. Wrapped within the dreams of parents and the promises of God, they
grow with the assurance of a plan and a purpose for their lives--albeit
a purpose shrouded in hope and mystery. For John the Baptist, the only
son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, there was much less mystery. John grew
up knowing that he would one day be called a prophet. In fact, he grew up knowing his life's exact call: "You will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him" (Luke 1:76). He was to be a Nazirite, literally one consecrated to God and separated from the general population.
We know very little about John's life outside of his short public ministry. We are told that this miracle child of a barren womb grew strong in spirit and lived in the desert. He ate locusts and wild honey and wore clothing made of camel's hair. His entire life seemed to be marked with the knowledge
that he was set apart for a unique and specific role. I imagine he thought often of the day he would meet the Lord whose way he was to prepare. I imagine he never expected that it would be someone from his own family.
John was baptizing in the Jordan River when the sky opened up and the Spirit descended like a dove, the sign that God had told him to expect. "The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who
will baptize with the Holy Spirit" (John 1:31). The Spirit rested upon Jesus. Twice, John seems to note his astonishment; "I myself did not know him." It is probably safe to assume that John knew who Jesus was; his mother, Elizabeth was Mary's cousin. But John did not know Jesus as the Christ, the one he had been set apart to proclaim, the one
whose sandals he was not worthy to untie.
I wonder how often I do not see the person in front of me--the loved one, the colleague, the friend I sell short as an imager bearer of God. John was so taken with what God revealed about Jesus that he realized he had never really known him. This distant cousin, present at family gatherings and near on holidays, was the Lord, the one he had been waiting for all his life. Without questioning God, without doubting Jesus, John immediately reframed his perspective and bowed before the Lamb of God. For the remainder of his days, John gave this testimony of Jesus: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me... I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God" (1:32-34).
How quick are
we to adjust our eyes to what God would have us to see?
If we are unwilling to let Him transform the world before our eyes, there will be people we will never really know, dynamics that will go unnoticed, signs we will miss completely. In the kingdom of God, astonishment should not surprise us.
The day after John was shown the truth about his cousin, he introduced
two of his disciples to the Christ. "Rabbi," they said, "where are you staying?" "Come," Jesus replied, "and you will see." Like Jesus himself, these words have both an element of the spiritual and the physical, something divine and something human. He reminds us that there
is a vertical quality about our lives, a reaching to taste and see the goodness of God, to know the one in whose image we were formed. But there is
also a horizontal quality about the invitation of Christ in our lives; we are called to see the image of God in our neighbor, to be salt in a world that has lost its saltiness, to reach out to one another as if reaching to Christ himself.
The disciples answered Jesus's invitation to come and see, learning in time that it was an offer of multiple dimensions. They went to his house and saw where he was staying, but they also discovered in his eyes a kingdom not of flesh and blood. They would not have known except that
God revealed it. They would not have realized except that they were willing
to see.

There is no doubt that Dan Brown*, armed with his brand of postmodern historical skepticism, has blatantly and deliberately misinformed his readers about the history of Christianity. Among many other obvious wrongdoings, he has committed the serious sin of blaspheming against

If you stop believing what your professor told you had to be true
and if you start thinking for yourself you may come to some
conclusions you hadn't expected. You may find the Bible makes
more sense than you thought or were told to think. Allow yourself

believe everyday what we don't understand unless it comes to
the issue of salvation. - - - Dr. Woodrow Kroll
There is simply no historic foundation for the position that the
Framers intended to build the 'wall of separation' that was
constitutionalized in Everson. The 'wall of separation be-
tween church and state' is a metaphor based on bad history,
a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging.
It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.
- - - Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, William Rehnquist
In 1796 the US Supreme Court issued this ruling, "By our form
of government, the Christian religion is the established religion,
and all sects and denominations of Christians are placed on
equal footing." Some 57 years later, after Congress was
petitioned to separate Christian principles from government,
in 1853 the House Judiciary Committee issued their formal report, including these words: "In this age there is no substitute
for Christianity. This was the religion of the founders of the republic,
and they expected it to be the religion of their dependents. The
great vital, conservative elements in our system is the belief of
our people in the pure doctrines and divine truths of the gospel
of Jesus Christ." - - - Dr. Gerald Beavan
"It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own
their dependence upon the overruling power of God
and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the
Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those
nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord."

"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." -- President Abraham Lincoln
We can all pray. We all should pray.
Our strength lies in
spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to evil. Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance with evil, or by public tolerance of scandalous ehavior. --President Herbert Hoover
Our faith teaches that there is no safer reliance than upon the God of our fathers, who has so singularly favored the American people in every national trial, and who will not forsake us so long as we obey His commandments and walk humbly in His footsteps. -- President William McKinley
Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign
reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State… --President Thomas Jefferson
The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation. America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture. -- President Woodrow Wilson
In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good, I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not less
than my own; nor those of my fellow-citizens at large, less than either. No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. -- George Washington
There are two prayers that I love to say—the first is the Lord’s Prayer,
and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a child’s prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep,” and I love to say that because it suits me. I have been repeating it every night for many years past, and
I say it yet, and I expect to say it my last night on earth… --President John Quincy Adams
Our strength lies in spiritual concepts. It lies in public sensitiveness to
evil. Our greatest danger is not from invasion by foreign armies. Our dangers are that we may commit suicide from within by complaisance
with evil, or by public tolerance of scandalous behavior. --President Herbert Hoover
--President John
Tyler, December 7, 1841
Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue; and if this cannot be inspired into our people in a greater measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers and the forms
of government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty. They will only exchange tyrants and tyrannies. --President John Adams
Whereas, it is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet
with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon… --Abraham Lincoln
--Abraham Lincoln
--President Ronald
Reagan
Mighty God…I yield Thee humble and hearty thanks that thou has preserved
me from the danger of the night past, and brought me to the light of the day, and the comforts thereof, a day which is consecrated to Thine own service and for Thine own honor. Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that I may not do mine own works, but wait on thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me. --George Washington, in his prayer journal
No country has been so much favored, or should acknowledge with deeper reverence the manifestations of the divine protection. An all wise Creator directed and guarded us in our infant struggle for freedom and has constantly watched over our surprising progress
until we have become
one of the great nations of the earth. --President James K. Polk
Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure to our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice, peace and union—a union depending not upon the constraint of force, but upon the loving devotion
of a free people; and that all things may be so ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all
generation.
Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise
ourselves.
But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ. Yes, I do love Jesus." --Abraham Lincoln
Oh! Almighty and Everlasting God, Creator of Heaven, Earth and the Universe: Help me to be, to think, to act what is right, because it is right; make me truthful, honest and honorable in all things; make me intellectually honest for the sake of right and honor and
without thought of reward to me.
So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world." --John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1630

For Christians, the life and death of Jesus are the ultimate expressions of love, and the supreme

During the high school football season, our Campus Life Club used to use
a crowd breaker that provided a lot of entertainment for all of us. We had four
cheerleaders up front with a box of football equipment, minus the more personal
stuff. They raced to see who was the first to get fully dressed in shoulder pads,
hip pads, knee pads, helmets and the rest. They each had a football player pro -
viding verbal coaching, but the results were still hilarious. Those cheerleaders
had no idea what gear went where. But that's
okay. That didn't need to know. But
you can be sure the players knew. Every day, whether it was for a practice or a
game, they got their equipment on. They didn't need it all day in school because
they weren't generally being chased, or run into at high speeds, or thrown to the
ground. But when it came time to play, the coaches made sure they had the equip -
ment they needed. The coach wasn't about to send them into the battle without what
they
would need to protect them.
Our missionary son called us one day and, in an uncharacteristically sober tone
of voice, opened with these words: "Mom, Dad, get your grace helmets on." He was
preparing us for bad news. They were in their sixth month of pregnancy with our
grandson, and the doctor had just spotted some rare and serious medical problems.
Our son knew what he, his wife, and our whole family were going to need for the trying
months ahead. We were going to need God's grace; the equipment that God provides
to give us that extra strength and protection we will need for the battle we're headed into.
Right now, you may be in one of those seasons where all your human resources are
just inadequate to keep you going. Here's God's open invitation, recorded in Hebrews 4:16,
our word for today from the Word of God. "Let us then approach the throne of grace with
confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
Grace is God's enabling power that sustains us when we're running on empty. It's sort
of like a reserve fuel tank that kicks in when our emotional and physical fuel tank has
run out.
And it's not just generic grace, you know, "one size fits all." It's customized grace,
specially designed for the kind of situation you need it for. God provides parenting
grace when that's what's needed; forgiving grace when forgiving is what you need to
do, cancer grace, suffering grace, persecution grace, funeral grace. For our family,
facing the deep questions, the deep feelings, the critical decisions about a little baby,
God's grace came in like a Daddy's arms picking us up and carrying us when we couldn't
walk any farther. That little guy has had his battles, along with us, and we may have some
more. But his story is one miracle after another. Not the least of which is the strength and
the grace that has protected us like body armor on a soldier, or gear on an athlete. And,
as God promised Paul in the pain and limitations of his thorn in the flesh, "My grace is
sufficient." (2 Corinthians 12:9) Or, as the original Greek says, "Enough for you - My grace."
His grace really is enough for you, no matter how desperate the situation. Because
He said "your strength will equal your days." (Deuteronomy 33:25) Whatever the burden, He
will match it with His grace. More than match it, if you'll go to His throne of grace to
get it. You have to go for the grace that this moment requires.
No matter what hits you, God is no less in charge; His plan is no less on target.
Things may be out of your control, but they're never out of His control. If you trust
Him, He will give you just the equipment you need for the battle you're facing,
because God's
plan will not lead you where His grace cannot keep you.

He would either be a lunatic -- on a level
with a man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell.

Judging Evangelicals Comparative Religion
From The Bench
Last week, Chuck and I told you about the judge's ruling in the InnerChange Freedom Initiative case in Iowa. We told you about the decision and about its potential impact on all faith-based groups seeking to minister to "the least, the last, and the lost."
But there's something even more disturbing about the judge's ruling: his caricature of the faith of millions of Americans who call themselves "evangelicals." In his opinion, the judge took it upon himself to analyze and critique, not only evangelical actions, but evangelical
beliefs.
The result is a woefully distorted picture of American evangelicals that paints them as fringe, divisive, and discriminatory. While he acknowledges that evangelicals can be members of long-established Christian denominations, he insists that evangelicals are, on the whole, suspicious
of religious institutions. My goodness.
According to this judge, it isn't only alleged evangelical attitudes toward institutions that set them apart. The judge wrote that evangelical beliefs are distinct from the beliefs held by Christian denominations, such as Lutherans, United Methodists, and Presbyterians.
What are these
beliefs? The judge pointed to Prison Fellowship's statement of faith. He wrote that while it "contains belief common to many types of Christian groups, it is also significantly different in many respects." Specifically, he cited its mention of Christ's substitutionary atonement and His bodily resurrection as doctrines that are not shared by "many Christians."
While it's true that some liberal Christians might object to our statement of faith, that doesn't change the fact that the statement is a classic expression of Christian orthodoxy. It is clearly in line with historical creeds that are the basis of nearly every Christian denomination and not just the Protestant ones: Indeed, Cardinal Avery Dulles, a leading Catholic theologian in America, has vetted our statement.
Speaking of Cardinal Dulles, the judge also concluded that Prison Fellowship, like other evangelicals, is suspicious of and
even contemptuous of Roman Catholics. This is a stunning statement since Chuck Colson is one of the founders of "Evangelicals and Catholics Together," which works and meets regularly to bridge the theological gaps between Catholics and evangelicals.
Prison Fellowship's alleged "contempt" for Catholics will also, no doubt, come as news to some of our board members and Catholic staffers, including the people who helped put this commentary together. They don't seem to find Prison Fellowship a "fringe" or "discriminatory" organization.
What's so unfortunate is that all this comes at a dark time in the prison system of America. With 2.3 million behind bars, a tragically disproportionate number of minorities, and an out-of-control recidivism rate, judges should be opening the doors to prisons, not shutting them.
We hope you will stand by us because, as I've shown, what's
at stake here is bigger than a Prison Fellowship initiative—it's about whether there will be a level playing field for faith-based groups to provide services to adults who have volunteered to receive them. And that is all about freedom.
Mark Twain once said that faith is "believing what you know ain't so." Scripture presents an altogether different definition. Faith is more than cognitive assent or blind acceptance of something. It is an informed surrender and trust that rests the whole person on the purposes and will of God. Faith involves belief, obedience, ethics, and lifestyle; it involves living with vision and memory.
The prophet Habakkuk lived in a time of spiritual and moral decline, which led to the economic, social, and political tragedies of his people. Like the people to whom he preached, Habakkuk came from a storied nation.
He was rooted in his God and all of the stories that accompanied Him--the Exodus, the tabernacle, the law,
and the land. Habakkuk knew that all of Israel's blessings were rooted in the covenantal faithfulness of a chosen people. They had come a long way since rejoicing over the miracle at the Red Sea or the completion of Solomon's temple. Yet Israel was established with the necessity of living in the three dimensions of time--past, present, and future. They were commanded to remember God's words
and mighty actions of history. They were called to see life as a present blessing, with faith and justice as a response to the God who gave it. And they lived with hope in God's good hands, such that neither death
nor the future was a
threat.
However, Israel forgot. Neglecting their heritage, the people walked away. They pursued other loves and became enamored with the nations around them. Israel forgot their high calling, and the consequences were tragic. The prophet Habakkuk was understandably grieved. Unable to understand what was happening to his community, the prophet walked through stages of depression, anger, acceptance, and faith. His chapters move from asking "why?" to expressing hopelessness or exclaiming anger, and finally, to singing.
I believe there are times in life when we are on a similar journey. Though at times we may find ourselves stuck in one stage or another,
we are called to follow a similar sense of story and to
remember God's involvement in our past, present, and future. Between the pages where Habakkuk cries out for God's answer and where he ends in a mixture of fear and faith, we learn something of the ambiguity, tension, and struggle that is ours until the journey ends.
Through trial and uncertainty, the apostle Paul encourages us likewise. We are to cling to what we know along the way: "For in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. And I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither
the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:37-39).
Despite seeming triumphs of evil, the people of God continue to discover anew that the promises of God are sure. In the words of the prophet Habakkuk, "The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea" (2:14). It is not easy. There are real dangers, costs to bear, and always a demand for perseverance. But ultimately and exclusively, our hope is in God alone. Through faith
we live knowing that God is who He says He is, remembering that his promises are sure, that He alone will conclude history and that his reckoning will be both final and just. Until that day, we watch and
wait, living by faith and memory.

There is simply no historic foundation for the position that the
Framers intended to build the 'wall of separation' that was
constitutionalized in Everson. The 'wall of separation be-

a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging.
It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.

In 1796 the US Supreme Court issued this ruling, "By our form

in 1853 the House Judiciary Committee issued their formal report, including these words: "In this age there is no substitute
for Christianity. This was the religion of the founders of the republic,

"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." -- President Abraham Lincoln
We can all pray. We all should pray.
--Abraham Lincoln
Polk
Looking for the guidance of that Divine Hand by which the destinies of nations and individuals are shaped, I call upon you everywhere, to unite with me in an earnest effort to secure to our country the blessings, not only of material prosperity, but of justice, peace and union—a union depending not upon the constraint of force, but upon the loving devotion
of a free people; and that all things may be so ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all
generation.
Every thinking man, when he thinks, realizes that the teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, but literally—impossible for us to figure what that loss would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals; all the standards towards which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise
ourselves.
So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world." --John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1630

He was five years old. His mommy wasn't feeling well, so she was taking a nap. His little
two-year-old sister wanted an ice cream cone, so he did what Mommy would do. He picked
up the car keys Mommy had left on the kitchen table and he took his little sister out to the
car and put her in the back seat. Then he proceeded to climb into the driver's seat, turn on
the car and somehow start driving. (This is a true story.) Then Mr. Five-Year-Old pulled out
onto the main thoroughfare at the corner. Thankfully, a police officer saw the car going by
apparently without a driver. That got the officer's attention. He pursued the mystery car and
managed to get the driver to pull over. Needless to say, there was one shocked policeman
when he opened the door and saw a little boy at the wheel. It's a
good thing he stopped him.
That little guy was never meant to drive. Just like you and me. As tough as it may be to
deal with, you and I were never meant to be the one driving our life. The One who gave you
your life is supposed to be driving your life. In the words of the Bible, we were "created by
Him and for Him." (Colossians 1:16) There's a fundamental reason that we continue to wonder what
the purpose of our life is and why it doesn't have the meaning we want it to have; a
fundamental
reason that no relationship or accomplishment or experience or even religion has filled the hole
in our heart. It's the reason we continue to end up feeling lonely and lost. We insist on driving
our life when God was supposed to.
In our word for today from the Word of God, Isaiah 53:6, the Bible says: "We all, like sheep,
have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way." The result is described a little later
in a subsequent chapter:
"Your sins have separated you from your God." (Isaiah 59:2) Here we are,
cruising down the road without the One we were made by and made for. That explains so much
of our frustration, so much of our hurt, and even the times we've crashed - all because we're
obsessed with driving.
You may be, by nature, a strong and a self-reliant person. And that can be good. You've had
to make it on your own; you've have to figure out things on your own. And maybe you've done
a pretty good job of it. Then God comes along and says, "If you want life to work, if you want to
have a relationship with Me, you have to let go of the wheel." You'll go to some of God's meetings,
you believe God's beliefs, maybe even contribute to some of God's causes, but you're not about
to let go of the wheel.
In the same verses that talk about us going our own way, God goes on to say, "The Lord has laid
on Him" - that's God's Son, Jesus - "the iniquity (or the wrong doing) of us all ... the punishment
that
brought us peace was upon Him." Jesus actually went to a cross to absorb all the guilt and the hell
of all of our wrongdoing so we could be forgiven and reunited with the God who made us; so we could
make it into His heaven when we die. If there was something you or I could do to make it with God, there's
no way He would have sent His Son to go through what He did when He died for us. It was the only way.
It's your only way.
But you'll have to let go of the wheel. This is one thing
you cannot do on your own. You and I are dying
spiritually, and Jesus is the Rescuer who's come to save us. You'll have to abandon trusting in yourself to
let go and trust the Man who died and rose again for you. If you insist on hanging onto the wheel of your life,
you will ultimately drive it over the cliff of an eternity away from God. And if you've got a family or people who
follow you, you may even take others with you.
Today, the God who made you, the God who gave His Son for you, is saying to you, "Let go of the
wheel
so I can take your life where I meant for it to go when I made you." The release of that wheel will result in the
greatest peace you've ever experienced, because the One who was supposed to drive will finally be driving.
It begins when you say, "Jesus, I'm Yours."
I'd love to help you begin this life-changing relationship with Him. If you'll visit us at our website, I've got
a brief explanation there of how it all happens. I'll send you my booklet about it called Yours For Life if you'll
just call for it at 877-741-1200.
The greatest tragedy in life would be if you go into eternity with your hands still stubbornly hanging onto
the wheel. Only Jesus can drive you where you want to end up.

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said
would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell.
You must make your choice. Either this Man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse .... You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.

Seeing With New Eyes Movies & Worldview
Summer is here, which means we are facing a barrage of summer movies. Many see it as a chance to sit back and indulge in a little harmless escapism.
However, for some—including Christians—the movie season raises what I think are serious questions: Which movies ought we to see, and why? And how should we interpret them? After all, Scripture teaches that we ought to take every thought captive in
obedience to Christ.
Many would think that I'm overanalyzing the issue, that a movie is simply
a chance for a good laugh or a good cry. It's easy to think that way, but
it's wrong.
In his must-read book Hollywood Worldviews, Brian Godawa reminds us of
a simple fact: What we see influences how we think. That holds true not just for what we read, but also what we see on the screen.
Godawa explains, "There is no such thing as a neutral story in which events and characters are presented objectively apart from interpretation. Every choice an author makes, from what kinds of characters she creates to which events she includes, is determined by the author's worldview. . . . And the worldview or philosophy of a film is conveyed much in the same way as stories of old would convey the values and beliefs of ancient societies -
through dramatic incarnation of those values. In a sense," he writes,
"movies are the new myths of American culture."
This is evident to anybody paying attention. Take a recent example: the remake of The Omen, the horror film about a child who turns out to be the Antichrist. Washington Post critic Stephen Hunter points out an "unsettling, disturbing aspect of [both versions of] 'The Omen,' which is in itself a cautionary warning of the power of film to manipulate." He writes that "as the movie rushes toward its finish,
it subverts the audience into mobhood; it makes us no longer human. It makes us yearn to break our deepest moral code, and harm a child."
Then there's the infamous example of The Da Vinci Code. Many thought Christians were downright crazy for arguing against the film, since it was just "a work of fiction." What they didn't consider were all the people who came out saying, "I didn't know Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married!" or "I didn't know Jesus wasn't considered divine until the Church took a vote!" Fiction, especially when allegedly based on truth, has a powerful effect on both the mind and the imagination.
So how do we counteract the negative lessons that entertainment can teach? One way is to support positive entertainment and learn to critique the stuff that is not positive. I invite you to visit our website or call us here at:

We'd like to send you an updated collection of movies we believe Christians
ought to be watching. These are movies that not only entertain, but also help
you think through your Christian worldview. Watch them with your non-Christian
friends and neighbors and discuss what you've seen.
And be sure also to pick up a copy of Brian Godawa's book Hollywood Worldviews. All this may make your filmgoing experience seem like more effort than you ever anticipated—but it'll also make it a rewarding and redemptive experience. BREAKPOINT with Charles Colson & Mark Earley
Father Greg Boyle is in the business of erasing the past. A Jesuit priest who is the founder and director of "Homeboy Industries" in East Los Angeles, Father Boyle has put together a team of physicians trained in the laser technology of tattoo removal. The team is part of a program that takes the tattoos of ex-gang members and wipes the slate clean. For many, it is as crucial a service as it is merciful.
Gang-related tattoos prevent many former gang members from getting jobs
or advancing in work. For
others, the markings critically impinge on mental health or put them in serious danger on the streets. There is no fee or community service required to receive the tattoo removal offered by Homeboy Industries. It is strictly a gift--perhaps a modern look at Christ washing the feet of his friends. Currently, there is a waiting list of over a thousand names.
For those involved, the spiritual imagery is often compelling. The seeming permanence of a gang tattoo fosters the attitude that the gang's claim is also permanent. It is a mark of ownership as much as identity. The emotional consequence is that it seems a part of you that can never be shaken. I suspect some of us have felt like this with past mistakes, sins whose mark we cannot shake off though we know we have been cleansed by Christ. Perhaps the imagery of tattoo removal can evoke a renewed sense of our blessed
assurance. Like former gang members who have had the marks of a former life removed, so our sins are blotted out by the blood of Christ. They are remembered no longer.
To those holding on to the scarred markings of former sin God would say: "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more" (Isaiah 43:25). Though your sins are as scarlet,
they shall be white as snow. Like the unmarked ex-gang members among
us, we are made into something new.
One of the curious things about the growing list of people interested in laser tattoo removal is that
Father Boyle is straightforward about the procedure. The process of tattoo removal is extremely painful. Patients describe the laser procedure as feeling like hot grease on their skin. And yet the list grows, each name representing a life that longs to be free and is willing to endure the pain to seize it.
When God uproots the scars caused by sin it is often a painful process. Malachi describes God and his work in our lives as the "refiner's fire"; we are either purified by the fire or destroyed by its flames. Removing the impurities we have embedded into our lives is at times quite uncomfortable. But like a child that trusts her mother enough to endure the pain of having a splinter removed or the young man who undergoes the burning process of removing a gang tattoo, we are freed by skillful hands. The Great Physician is sometimes a surgeon. But when we look at
Him through the refining fires of his presence, we know that it was well worth putting our name on the list. "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us"
(Psalm 103:10-12). At his table, we are made new.

If you stop believing what your professor told you had to be true
and if you start thinking for yourself you may come to some
conclusions you hadn't expected. You may find the Bible makes
more sense than you thought or were told to think. Allow yourself

There is simply no historic foundation for the position that the
Framers intended to build the 'wall of separation' that was
constitutionalized in Everson. The 'wall of separation be-
tween church and state' is a metaphor based on bad history,
a metaphor which has
proved useless as a guide to judging.
It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.

In 1796 the US Supreme Court issued this ruling, "By our form
of government, the Christian religion is the established religion,
and all sects and denominations of Christians are placed on
equal footing." Some 57 years later, after Congress was
petitioned to separate Christian principles from government,
in 1853 the House Judiciary Committee issued their formal report, including these words: "In this age there is no substitute
for Christianity.

We should ask the
fulfillment of God’s will.
Our faith teaches that there is no safer reliance than upon the God of our fathers, who has so singularly favored the American people in every national trial, and who will not forsake us so
long as we obey His commandments and walk humbly in His footsteps.
It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way
of peace and salvation.
There are two prayers that I love to say—the first is the Lord’s Prayer,
and because the Lord taught it; and the other is what seems to be a child’s prayer: “Now I lay me down to
sleep,” and I love to say that because it suits me.
We are all called upon by the highest obligations of duty to renew our thanks and our devotion to our Heavenly Parent, who has continued to vouchsafe
to us the eminent blessings which surround us and who has so signally crowned the year with His goodness.
The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue; and if this cannot be inspired into our people in a greater measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers and the forms
of government, but they will
not obtain a lasting liberty.
--Abraham Lincoln
Without God,
there is no virtue, because there's no prompting of the conscience.
Let my heart, therefore, Gracious God, be so affected with the glory and majesty of it, that I may not do mine own works, but wait on
thee, and discharge those weighty duties thou requirest of me.
But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and
there consecrated myself to Christ.
So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw! his present help from us, we shall be

"If there is anything in my thought or style to commend ,

"So great is my veneration for the Bible that the earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society. I have for many years made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year." - President John Quincy Adams
"The existence of the Bible, as a Book for the people, is the greatest benefit which the human race has ever experienced. Every attempt to

"There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in
any profane history." - Sir Isaac Newton (Scientist)
"Let mental culture go on advancing, let the natural sciences
progress in even greater extent and depth, and the human
mind widen itself as much as it desires; beyond the elevation

it will not go." - Goethe (Author)
"I have known ninety-five of the world's great men in my time,

"Whatever merit there is in anything that I have written is simply
due to the fact that when I was a chile my mother daily read me
a part of the Bible and daily made me learn a part of it by heart."
- John Ruskin (art critic and social commentator)
"The Bible has been the Magna Charta of the poor and oppressed.
The human race is not in a position to dispense with it." - Thomas
Huxley (Author & Scientist)
"The whole hope of human progress is suspended on the ever
growing influence of the Bible." - W.H. Seward (Secretary of State)
"America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness, which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scriptures. Part of the destiny of Americans lies in their daily perusal of this great book of revelations. That if they would see
America free and pure they will make their own spirits free and pure by this baptism of the Holy Spirit." --President Woodrow Wilson

- - Dave Hunt

leads to destruction (Hell, damnation, eternal punishment),
and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow

Dear Friends,
Goodbye for now with jocundness for both you

Our son had just finished his first day of high school and he thought
he had found the "happy hunting ground." For girls, that is. He regaled
his sister, then a junior in high school, with stories about all the incredible
girls he'd seen that day. The more he talked, the more disgusted she became.
Finally, she blurted, "You are so superficial!" To which he immediately replied:
"Well, of course. I'm a freshman! We're into superficial!"
Most of us aren't into superficial - not anymore. We've experienced enough
superficial in our relationships for a lifetime. Now we just want something real.
But there's more superficial and less real than ever.
A Newsweek writer said recently, "The greatest challenge of this century is going
to be to avoid becoming a faceless society." She went on to describe our modern
online relationships with acquaintances or friends we've never really met, and who
may not be at all like the person they say they are. We're more connected to more
people than ever before, but in many ways, we're more lonely than we've ever been.
Anna Quindlen, the Newsweek columnist, tells about a memoir entitled, "The
Autobiography of a Face," in which the author describes her childhood after cancer
left her with much of her lower jaw gone or distorted. The author said there was one
night of the year when she felt happiest and most free: Halloween, when she could wear
a mask. Quindlen says, "This is the age of the mask." Our superficial world has become
a place where, in her words, so many are "looking for something more, someone who
will see them across a field of restaurant tables, really see them ... looking for that one
face in the crowd. Maybe everyone is."
Once there was a woman with incurable
medical problems who was desperate for
someone who would care; someone who could cure her. With her money and her medical
options gone, she pushed her way through a crushing crowd to get to a man called Jesus.
In faith, she touched the hem of His robe, sure that Jesus would never know in the middle
of so many people pressing on Him. But He said, "I know power has gone out from Me."
The Bible says she found out that "she could not go unnoticed" by Jesus (Luke 8:43-48).
Neither can you. Jesus is the face in the crowd who offers you the authentic love you've
been looking for your whole life.
1 Samuel 16:7, our word for today from the Word of God tells us that "man looks at the
outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart." Jesus doesn't care about the superficial
stuff that's so important to everyone else. He cares about your heart. And because He's God,
He knows all the hurt, all the darkness, all the sin that's there. And He loves you.
How can you
know that? He's offered living proof - actually, dying proof. The Bible says, "God demonstrates
His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
We didn't care about Him, but He died for us - for the sin that separates us from Him. That's
how much He loves you. That's how much He desires to have a relationship with you. His love
is the only one you can never lose, because it's not based on your performance. It's based on
His promise, "I will never leave you." (Hebrews 13:5) The One who knows you best loves you most!
Jesus is the one person the real you can finally be safe with.
He doesn't force His love on you. You have to choose it; you have to respond to it. In the
Bible's words, "We love Him because He loved us first." (1 John 4:19) Your relationship with Him
begins with an act of total trust in the One who loved you enough to die for you. You tell Him,
"Jesus, I'm sorry for hijacking my life from God and running it my way. You're my only hope
of being forgiven - of going to heaven - because You died and rose again for Me, and beginning
today, I am Yours, Jesus."
If that's what you want, I want to
invite you to visit our website today. You'll find a brief
explanation there from the Bible of how to be sure you belong to Jesus. Or I'll send you
my written version of Yours For Life if you'll just call and let us know you want it at
877-741-1200.
No one on earth has the love to fill that hole in your heart. It's a God-shaped hole, and only
He's big enough to fill it. You don't have to do anything to impress Him or to get Him to love
you.
He already does. Jesus - He's the end of your search.

Either this Man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or
something worse .... You can shut Him up for fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great hum! an teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.

Don't Forget
The Books - Recommendations
For Summer Reading
What are you taking on vacation this summer? Probably the iPod, the Gameboy, maybe even the DVD player—nothing wrong with that. Music and movies can be enriching as well as relaxing. But they're no substitute for that classic summer tradition of reading books.
Unfortunately, many of us are so hooked on technology that we're in danger of losing our taste for good books. But we need books to exercise our mind, to explore important ideas, and to provide great topics for family discussion.
So I've got a few
recommendations for summer reading, starting with a book by one of my closest friends. Michael Novak and his daughter Jana have collaborated on their second book together, Washington's God. Michael was asked to write it by James Rees, executive director of the Museum and Visitors' Center at Mount Vernon, who was always getting requests for "a book on George Washington's religion."
Michael and Jana discovered that much of the conventional wisdom about Washington was wrong. You've probably heard that Washington observed only the outward forms of religion for appearance's sake. But by the accounts of those who knew him, George Washington's integrity was such that he never would have done anything just for appearance's sake. For example, he would have considered it hypocrisy to keep urging his soldiers to pray for guidance
and protection, if he himself had not prayed regularly or believed in a God
who answered prayer. Michael and Jana provide a detailed portrait of the
man's faith, in large part by "try[ing] to take Washington's words about
God seriously," instead of dismissing them as so many historians have done.
Another book you ought to add to your list is Rodney Stark's The Victory
of Reason. This book also reveals truths that political correctness has
long tried to bury—namely, that Christianity led directly to the success
of Western culture. It was Christianity's emphasis on reason as a gift
from God that gave us our rich heritage in science, politics, and so many
other fields. I'll be talking more about The Victory of Reason in the weeks ahead—so stay tuned.
As you pack the new books, don't forget to throw in a few old ones as well. It was C. S. Lewis who advised, "You should at least read one old [book]
to every three new ones. . . . We all . . .
need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period." On our website, we have
lists of recommended books that include many of the great classics—
including
some by Lewis himself. I urge you to check it out. Or call
us at 1-877-322-5527, and we'll be glad to send you our recommendations.
The last thing I want to do is make your summer vacation sound like work.
We all need relaxation. But we also need to nourish and re-energize our minds and spirits as well as our bodies, and that can be just as much fun as the video games.
So as you pack the electronic toys, make sure you don't forget the books. BREAKPOINT with Charles Colson & Mark Earley
The rope dangled out her window, still swaying from the men who had just used it to escape. Her name
was Rahab, a prostitute who lived in the outskirts of the city and the margins of society. Standing at her open window, Rahab knew she had committed an act that could get her killed. The men who climbed out her window were Israelites, spies who had come
to search out the city of Jericho. Rahab was the reason they got away.
She had heard stories about the people of Israel. News had traveled steadily across the Jordon; the Israelites were led by a powerful God. Now this people and their God were just around the corner, and invasion of Jericho was imminent. So when two men appeared at her house, Rahab made
a choice to surrender. With
fear and trembling, she believed in the God who sent them:
"I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below" (Joshua 2:9-11).
Thousands of years later, Rahab's story is still told--how she hid the Israelite spies and sent the king's messengers in the wrong direction, how she lowered a rope out her window and helped the Israelites escape, how
she was spared when the Israelites returned because she had followed their instructions. Rahab is mentioned three times in the New Testament--for her faith, her righteousness, and her heritage. A prostitute rejected among her own people, she was far from rejected by the LORD.
In the twinkling of an eye we, too, can change the direction of everything to come. In the flash of a decision, we can be made into something new. "Give ear and come to me," says the LORD. "Hear me, that your soul may live. And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David" (Isaiah 55:3). Fourteen hundred years after Rahab helped the Israelites, the Jewish Messiah was born from her lineage.
God used this life of little distinction in the bloodline of his own Son.
The worldview we embrace routes our life in a certain direction. Choosing to align herself with the God of Israel, Rahab was led to a place of safety during the battle of Jericho. "Our lives for your lives," the spies had assured her, and they left her with instructions for the coming invasion: Tie this scarlet cord in the window and bring your family into your house. No one who is in the house with you will be harmed. Rahab agreed. As they slipped down the rope, she tied the scarlet cord in
the window. And as promised, her life was spared.
Such is the certain outcome of a life that wills to follow the God
of Israel. We are given hope and a future, and placed on a sure path.
He takes the prostitute and provides her a robe of righteousness. He proclaims liberty to the captive and release to those in darkness. He calls the guilty and the brokenhearted and He sends them his own Son.
The assurance of Jesus Christ is that he is leading us to the house of the Father. Like a scarlet cord across our lives, it is his blood that gets us home.
