This attached e-mail from 2009 (at the bottom of the page) really hit home for me as I was going through all my e-mails from the past and sorting them -- read it at the end of this.

I am just getting over a quadruple bypass performed 12 weeks ago (January 26, 2012 -- after a mild heart attack at 6am one previous Sunday morning in late January -- with chest pain and heartburn ongoing from mid-December).  I have working at a sedentary job for 11 years.  Even though I was a former competitive gymnast, PE major, Marine, and bodybuilder and still worked out 3-6 times a week, it WASN'T enough!

As my cardiologist told me, my family history is disturbing.  My cholesterol had been creeping higher and higher, and bad things were due to happen.  I actually had an uncle who was a doctor who died of a heart attack at 44. My mom had a heart attack at 50 and died of heart congestion at 84.  My dad died of a heart attack at 78 in the bathtub one morning -- and there were others -- both grandfathers died young in their 30's-40's before WWII -- probably from bad hearts.

I haven't had a true 6-pack since 1997, and that was the last time I actually wrote down everything I ate and calculated/crunched the numbers so that I only took in 1900-2100 cal every day with 40-45% protein and 5-10% fat intake.  My cholesterol ranged from 79-129 with body fat 7-8% and a weight of 151-156.  Last summer, my cholesterol maxed out at about 311 with body fat near 15% and weight in the 170's.  Presently, I am down to cholesterol level of about 179 with meds, 14% BF, and 169-176 body weight -- okay, but nowhere near good enough.

In order to get a 6-pack, it has to be top priority:
 - watching everything you eat -- calculating the numbers for months and months and months fighting a slower metabolism after the age of 40 (and friends) every step and every day
 - major cardio just about every day
 - workouts 5-7 times a week

But, as one ages, the job and income become the priority.  A social life and love life become more important -- drinking and eating with friends & co-workers and loved ones -- getting to the gym 5 times a week gets harder and harder and one gets more and more tired.

I would like to have a 6-pack just once more -- perhaps this summer.  It would be really nice if EVERYBODY in this group got 6-packs with nice, muscular, toned bodies and threw a HUGE party for everyone -- in AUSTRALIA!!!!

Just something to think about.  G.R.

Working out 4 times a day is not enough to have abs like the ones you want. You have to make exercise a part of your everyday life, for the rest of your life. You just need to include everything you do as a routine, not just for 4 days of a week.
I ride my bike to the gym everyday, work out for an hour then ride my bike to work. Distance is an excuse. Then I work, then I go to the gym after work, work out for an hour and then ride home. I usually relax at night times because most of my regime is done in the morning. But you have to watch what you eat too. Anything is achievable if you put your mind to it and do not think of exercise as chore or an add on. It has to be part of your life. And this, is the result of my rigid lifestyle. Lakes

I am sorry to read about your heart attack and bypass surgery, but so glad you are here to tell us about it.  Crazy stuff.  I do not know if there is a correct answer or method to the madness.  From the outside, and from what you have offered here, it is safe to say you had done everything right physically.  Family history is so important to know and more so to understand.  That 311 would have set off alarms from what I understand.  I have never had a six-pack and am comfortable with my midsection.  It is a lifestyle.  We need to make choices and set priorities.  Sounds like you may have started on the road to that six-pack again.  I like the party idea!  B

Hi GR. How old were you when you had your heart attack? I have the same problem as you. Family history. My dad died at 59yo in 1963. Back then they didn't know what to do but give you a nitro pill. As my Dr. said they know so much now as how to treat it but no advances in how to stop it from happening. Yes there are meds now to help prevent it to a point. In a case like ours it is much harder, so I found out. I was 44YO when I had a triple bypass. Six years I had 5 by passes. Then about 6 years after I had 5 stints put in. Then about 61/2 years a triple. I lost count of how many balloonings I'v had. It's been a little over 7 years so I am waiting for the next one. Trouble is I have no more veins or arteries left so the only option left is a cadaver's and they don't work very well at all. My two have have  younger brothers both have heart problems, not nearly as much as me.

I have heard that a person can have rock hard abs but are hidden under to much fat to show or know you have them. Goo luck and I wish you all the luck in the world and reach your goal.

Thom

I am sorry to hear your situation Tom. I don't know what you mean by no more veins left. Do you mean no veins that can be used as replacements or no veins in heart area which can be dealt with left. If it is former here is england I have heard from bbc and our newspapers of a an experiment into mass production of veins through genetic engineering, using dna. I thought from what I read that it was in an advanced stage of research. I understood that the vein is genetically quite simple. I am not a medic so I have no idea if this is of use at all. I thought though that I would mention it. You may know about this already but here is a link from our National Health News.
