For many companies, roadmapping is not a regular activity. It's a process of defining the obvious things to include in the roadmap, the pretty obvious things to exclude, and then dealing with that "stuff in the middle," the left-over items. How do you address the stuff in the middle – is it left to opinion, politics, or completely unattended? For some tips on building roadmaps, getting executive buy-in, and setting the right priorities, read more at the Pivotal PM blog: http://tinyurl.com/2av6beg.

What are your best roadmapping tips? Please respond in this discussion thread.

Subject: Reqs™ Software To Help You Capture & Prioritize Requirements Easily
jillian280group
Send Email Send Email

As a product manager you most likely are constantly receiving feature requests from customers, sales, tech support, your executives and many other sources. Without a process and requirements software in place to capture these ideas you run the risk of missing good and important suggestions when doing your product planning.

Reqs is simple utility that gives you a basic starter solution to easily capture requirements and then sort and prioritize them to plan out your product releases. For each requirement you can capture the following information:

  • Status (open, closed, deferred)
  • Type (feature, bug)
  • Priority (high, medium, low)
  • Requesting group/person and contact info
  • Release to assign the requirement to

With Reqs you can also set up a web-based software form (using GoogleDocs forms or any other solution) so that customers and others can enter their suggestions directly and the results can be imported into your Reqs requirements software database. This provides a simple and effective way to get feedback on your products.

After you have captured your requirements you can assign them to releases, sort by different criteria, find based on specific criteria (i.e. all "High Priority" or all "Open") or export to Word or Excel to use in a market requirements document or product requirements document.

Reqs 1.0 is free. We are providing it at no charge because we find that many product managers have no solution for gathering requirements. If you like it let us know and give us suggestions. If there is enough support we will release an upgraded version with many new features.

Customers in today's post-recession economy want to see verifiable value from the products and services they buy. In other words, they expect solutions that demonstrably lower costs, improve efficiencies or increase revenues. This means you need to deliver products and services they are willing to pay for.

REGISTER HERE http://www.280group.com/blog/?5Y7fbsvQ

The biggest challenge, however, is deciding which product investments will meet customer demands and produce the fastest time-to-profit. To make the right choices, you must consider customer needs; your company's business objectives; the markets you serve; your development and distribution costs; and how your competitors will respond.

New Rules Webinar:
"Drive Profitable Growth through Innovation"

Everyone contributes to innovation but Product Managers own it – making internal collaboration so crucial to the success of the innovation process. Informally collecting ideas from throughout the organization and deciding yourself – as a product manager – which ideas are the best often allows executives to have the greatest influence even when their ideas may be biased by strategic customers. Product managers and executives need a neutral and data-based way to foster the discipline of innovation within their own company that properly weighs the feedback from all parties, customers included, to improve the consistency of marketable innovation. When ideas are collected, but aren't incorporated and evaluated throughout the innovation cycle, success of the product becomes increasingly a matter of chance.

Join Greg Cohen, Senior Principal Consultant, at the 280 Group, for a webinar on October 27th to learn how developing the creative ideas that lead to innovative products is a discipline unto itself. Learn techniques that can lead to products that will have lasting competitive advantage in the marketplace. In addition to going out to speak to your customers, discover the six other research techniques that can lead to insights that will let you develop products that create significantly more value for the customer.

42 Rules of Product Management™
Learn the Rules of Product Management from Leading Experts Around the World!

'42 Rules of Product Management' is a collection of product management wisdom from forty experts from around the world. With over five hundred years of combined hands-on product management and product marketing experience, the authors each shares one rule that they think is critical to know to succeed in product management.  Whether you are a seasoned and experienced product manager or are just starting out, '42 Rules of Product Management' will help you lead with greater effectiveness and influence.

Packed with pearls of product management wisdom, this book has something for everyone. Best of all, it was written with the busy product manager in mind.  Each rule is kept to two pages and designed to stand-on its own. They can be read in any order.  In less than five minutes a day, you can learn from forty of the best product managers in the world.

Introduction (from the book)
Back when I started my career as a product manager, things were quite different than they are today. There were no books or training courses. There were no product management associations, blogs, or newsletters. Email was just in its infancy and the World Wide Web was merely an experiment being conducted by a small group of elite technologists. The only way that you learned chow to be a great product manager was by trial and (often painful) error. Occasionally, if you were lucky, you would have a manager who could teach
you the subtleties and mentor you (I had several and they made a huge difference in my career).

My, how things have changed. There are all kinds of resources available to help you learn the profession of product management. Product management has grown up; companies are recognizing what a key role it plays in the success or failure of their products and their overall results. And along with all of this, there are many product management experts who have emerged that are enthusiastic about sharing what they have learned about the profession.

The goal of this book is to expose you to the wisdom and knowledge from a group of the world's leading product management experts. Among the contributors, there are leading authors, professors, CEOs and vice presidents, bloggers, consultants, trainers, and even a few salespeople and engineers. In total, there are over five centuries of collected wisdom represented here.

To put the book together, we reached out to a large number of people throughout the world. (If you were not included, please don't be offended. Email us and let us know so we can include you in future projects like this.) The rules were submitted over a two-month period. Each rule stands on its own, and they are not in any particular order in the book.

It is our sincere hope that the rules in this book will help make your product management career more enjoyable and more successful. And equally important, we hope that it will lead to you shipping products that your customers love and that are wildly successful and highly profitable.

Extra Product Management Rules!

We had too many great rules that were submitted by our authors to fit into our new book42 Rules of Product ManagementIn order to share them with our readers we have been updating our blog with the bonus rules, we couldn't keep them to ourselves!

Articles:

·"Rule 44: Focus on Breakthrough Innovation for Products" We loved Janet George's extra submission for our book. See below the fold!

·"Product Management Rule 43: Life is Short" This is the first in a series of additional rules that couldn't fit in the book.

·"`Cookies' Cause Bitter Backlash" – Wall Street Journal, September 19, 2010 [Part 2] Re-spawning a program after you think you have deleted it is the way that "scareware" applications work.  Scareware refers to the phony anti-virus programs that pretend to scan your system and warn you that your system is "infected" with viruses.  If you buy the program, you can get rid of this virus.  Of course, the only real virus is the scareware program itself, planted on your system by cybercriminals.

·Andreesen's new "Rockmelt" Browser– First Take
I got an invitation from a colleague of mine this morning to try Rockmelt, a new browser from a company backed by Marc Andreesen. Unlike the other reviews I have read of it, in my first look here I found a lot to like.

·Thoughts on Basecamp
I want to like Basecamp… I really do, but I just can't seem to get behind it. I was introduced to Basecamp a few months back while working on a huge project that desperately needed a portal. This project had many parts, associated files and many members from different companies who had never met face to face. While I think that Basecamp has a few things going for it, I have a few issues.
