Well, that confirms what I've heard. Sad, we could use a few more articulated
steal locos in running condition.

Having been at the VMT this past weekend for the Lerro Productions photo shoot,
I can tell you the chances of 1218 running again are non-existant. The
locomotive is gutted internally as it was undergoing an overhaul at the time NS
terminated the steam program in 1994.Â
The 611 is a different story. Every knob, lever, and handle in the cab is kept
lubricated along with the running gear and other essential parts. When asked
how long it would take to bring the engine up to running condition I was told
"send her down the (East End) shops for about a week, and she'll be on the
road".Â

P.S. I have a preference towards 1218 myself

Sounds like a poor attempt at humor to me.
If Norfolk Southern were to restore and run any steam, I'd prefer they bring
1218 back

Sounds like a poor attempt at humor to me.
If Norfolk Southern were to restore and run any steam, I'd prefer they bring
1218 back

Aside from that this come after Pete Lerro does a night photo shoot with both
the 611 and the 1218. Can't even find the original article. Most of the
"history" was copy pasted from the wikipedia page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_and_Western_611
My question is, how would operating a steam locomotive, get better rail traffic
for a company? All it will do is get the attention of railfans, and the EPA, as
steam is a bygone era. They would have better luck with a EMD or GE Demonstrator
touring the RR verses a steam locomotive.
"Service its rusted parts"
It's stored in almost-operable service, mothballed, and well oiled to keep the
bearings in shape. It needs flues, and upgrades to the FRA form 4, but other
than that she should be ready to steam.

Actually it has to be a joke. There are way too many spelling and grammar
errors to be a press release from any self-respecting company. Why was this
even posted?Â

I was thinking the same think Jeff.
Until I see it on the NS webpage, I wont believe it.
However, i did here talk that NS is funding the 4501 restoration at TVRM... part
of the deal was NS could use her for special trains so many times a year.
