A group of amateur philosophers in Toronto interested in friendly, respectful and rational discussions focused through concepts in western philosophy.
The writings of western philosophers, Philosophy Now magazine, the Socratic Method, critical thinking and other methods of inquiry may be used.
Our group discussions would take place in local Toronto venues. We may also have email/message-board discussions and on-line chats, and attend presentations with guest speakers.
Discussions would include topics in epistemology (the nature, origin and scope of knowledge), metaphysics (ontology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of perception, philosophy of science), axiology (ethics, aesthetics), logic (What are the logical fallacies? What makes for good thinking? When can we say for sure that something just doesn't make sense? How can we think critically about complicated arguments?), and philosophy of language (What are 'meaning' and 'truth' within human languages).
If you'd like to join us, please let us know your interests within western philosophy.
Please note that THIS IS NOT A FORUM FOR SERMONIZING NOR FOR RELIGIOUS PROSELYTIZING.
The 'Calendar' link at left shows some philosophy discussions.
For outside group meetings, there is no need to RSVP.
You may schedule a meeting, with topic(s) of your choice, and structure it as formal or as informal as you like. Feel free to use the poll info (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings seem to be preferred).
Next scheduled meeting: TBA.
Past location: Daily Express Cafe, 280 Bloor St West, 1 block west of the St George exit of St George subway station, almost across the street from the Bata shoe museum.
