Greetings, this is a monthly notice.
While I am trying to include links to various sources that are current and of
use to members of this group, some might change; temporarily be out of action;
or be permanently unreachable.
If you find one which does not work, please let me know so that I can either
find out where it has moved and correct the situation or perhaps find another
that does the same job. I use many of these same links myself, but there are
many and I might not get to all of them frequently.
Feel free to add any that you find useful and make a post mentioning any gems
you might uncover when you do.
Wade
Hello,
If you haven't already done so please feel free to go to the photo section and
create your own Album where you can upload your ideas for heraldic designs. If
you need a piece of artwork to use in your design mention it and perhaps someone
has something you can use or can find or create it. Then they can upload it to
your album for you.
BTW Yahoo! calls an Album made on the main Photo page a Collection, though what
it's called really makes little difference.
It's a pretty simple step by step process to create an album and I don't believe
that you can accidently delete anyone else's album's or images. If you have
problems ask me and I can create it for you. In the mean time you can still
upload any picture you want to share with everyone onto the main Photo page and
I can always file it to the proper album later on.
Yahoo! allows for GIF and JPG files only and not BMP, TIF, PSD, or other file
image formats. I'm not 100% sure about PNG files, but if you know what a PNG
format is, it is easy enough for you to change it to a GIF or JPG.
I've got this message set to be sent out now to someone when they subscribe to
the group as well as once a month. Once it's been sent out once I'll set it to
only go out on subscription. (unless I forget LOL)
Wade
...but ignore the bits about Heraldic Symbolism. Even the Mundane
Heralds are dubious about that and point out that mostly the pretty
pictures are just pretty pictures. It's only afterwards that people
started writing up poetry and allegory about the things on the shield
not when and why they were put on the arms in the first place normally.

Hi,
Just a note to remind people that there will be a meeting of the Lions
Gate College of Heralds tomorrow night at the Port Moody Station Museum
at 7pm.
For those who do not know this is a meeting for folks in the Lions Gate
area who are interested in practicing or learning SCA heraldry. We'll be
discussing December submissions to Kingdom from members of An Tir.

It's a link to an article I created on Choosing an SCA Heraldic Device. I
did the article a number of years ago for a newsletter and it's been reprinted
once or twice as well as being included on my own web site. It isn't a nuts
and bolts article on heraldry, rather it is intended to be an aid to brainstorming
and figuring out ideas for just what you want to put on that blank shield
when you want something but haven't a clue what.

Pretty nifty. Don't worry about the transparency in the gif, that's window
dressing and depending on the software you are using can almost be impossible
to figure out and fraught with land mines. Check out the way Yahoo! has treated
some of mine. There's reason for the grey background on the Group Pages.
LOL (For some reason when Yahoo resizes things the transparent background
colour becomes a bit of a halo around the image, in the case of the gif of
my achievement it's grey. When I had my arms the halo was an odd bluegreen.
;-) ) You're doin' good!
On a field sable a crescent gules on a bezant and a bordure compony gules and or
That's pretty good for a first try at a blazon! Let's see what I would come
up with:
Sable on a bezant a crescent gules a bordure compony Or and gules.
It's very much the same with only a grammatical error and difference in wording
from what we normally use and one slight heraldic error.
The slight grammatical error is that we only capitalize in two places. At
the beginning of the blazon, because it is supposed to be a sentence and
we also always capitalize the tincture of the metal named "Or". I have heard
that is to distinguish it from the from the word "or". (for those who don't
know "bezant" is the special term for a "roundel" when it is yellow or gold
(Or) in "tincture".
The slight heraldic error would only lead to a minor difference in how the
device would be emblazoned. The description of the tinctures as drawn should
be "Or and gules" because in the top left corner of the compony bordure the
topmost piece is yellow. Remember: First is "Top to Bottom" and then is "Dexter
to Sinister". In this case while the red bit is indeed to the Dexter of
the yellow bit, the yellow bit is to the chief of the red bit.
I have also seen compony drawn with it starting with a full square in the
corner, though I think starting on the diagonal is quite elegant.
We drop "on a field" because that is implied though it is something once
used. Other than that it is a matter of the conventions of wording used at
this time.
Now that we have a blazon (description) and emblazon (drawing) comes the
challenge! That is to compare it with what has been registered before and
to see if it is unique! Or at least different enough from all others that
have come to pass.
That might take a bit. It takes a bit of logic and deduction. We have to
seek out all devices with a sole bezant on sable to be sure and make sure
that none have bordure and crescent. But that I won't do immediately here.
It takes a bit of work to do it right and best not to have just one do it
in the end.
Sincerely,
Wade

I've just made up a first draft of a device which you can see at

then go to "photos", my directory is Alienor and there is only one
graphic in my directory so far ( couldn't remember how to make a
transparent gif in Image Ready, so just pretend the white part at the

I'm not real good at blazonry but I will give it a try here, please

I think I've got the elements correct, but I doubt that the order is

I have a question I want to put up here, but you can answer me privately
if you desire.
Would any be opposed to me putting device designs we discuss in the photo
area of the Group?
I'd like to be able to put up versions of and variations on them as well
as for you to put up your ideas for them in the albums that others might
also look at and perhaps give feed back from. It can be good to get feedback
from others and it is fairly simple to upload to the albums with no worries
about any viruses sneaking their way in through the mails.
I know that some might be shy to see their cognitive doodles being aired
so I can understand if you'd shy away form such public display. So feel free
to write me and let me know on this list or in private.
I'll write individuals I've been working with privately as well to ask permission
or feel free to create your own folder in the photo album of the group or
post directly to the main album and I'll create a folder for you.

Traditionally Heralds have included
plays on words and imagery in Coats of Arms. The Term for this is "Canting"
or "a Cant". Sometimes they will use a what to us might be obscure term
or name for something for the name of a charge just to make the Cant. Other
times it will be pretty obvious. For instance:
Giovanna Lamberti
* This name was registered in April of 2003 (via the East).
* The following device associated with this name was registered in August
of 1996 (via the East):
Per fess purpure and vert, a chevron Or between two roses and a lamb statant
argent.
Dervla Aisling Lambkyn
* This name was registered in August of 1992 (via Caid).
* The following device associated with this name was registered in June
of 1992 (via Caid):
Vert, a ram's head cabossed holding in its mouth a sword fesswise reversed,
an orle of hearts argent.
Even though baby animals are not allowed in SCA Heraldry, they have allowed
them on occasion for a good cant.

Thanks!
I'd like to welcome everyone to the heraldry shop. Pompous as that sounds
I had to call it something and I set it up as a place to do SCA heraldry
consulting out of. :-)
I see that Uilliam, Lions Gate's Herald and Caitrina his deputy herald are
both members here now as well. The Lions Gate Heraldry Workshop last night
was a great success! I'm looking forward to the next one in February! It
is scheduled at the moment for February 20th at 7pm to 10pm though more than
likely after 9:30 we'll be packing up.
(If you look on the Calendar on the Heraldry Shop Site ignore the January
15th date for the workshop. This first month we held it on the 4th Thursday.)
Feel free to create your own Album in the Photo Section of the Group. It's
very easy to do, just click on "Create Album" then Fill in the blank with
the name you want to call it. I suggest you include your name in the name.
And decide if you want people other than yourself to be able to add images
to it other than yourself. (Group or Personal) If you make it Personal, then
only you or a Moderator such as myself can add images to it.
If you really want people to see something then feel free to put it in the
main photo album where people will see it when they first open the photo
albums.
Also if you put something really cool in a photo album or the files section
or wherever, drop a message here to the mailing list to let people know.
That includes even if you have a device idea that you want people's opinion
on or that you are particularly proud of. BTW Check out "the full achievement"
in the Photo Album labeled "Uilliam's Stuff". An achievement is basicaly
displaying your coat of arms with all the bells and whistles. If you want
to know what you are entitled to include in your achievement as a member
of the Kingdom of An Tir check out the Link on the Links page labeled "An
Tir: Achievments".
Eventually there will also be files in the Files section and perhaps Databases
and Polls as well. You can add items to the Calendar that you think others
might find interesting.
You can use this message list to ask heraldry type questions or write private
e-mail. If you think others might be interested in the topic this could be
a good place to ask.
BTW if you hadn't guessed, "wadeofmanyplaceslg" and "lordwadeofmanyplaces"
are both me. It is just that one is tied to my SCA e-mail account and one
is tied to my mundane e-mail account and it lets me easily do stuff from
either without switching back and forth.

Hey Wade. Great idea! I'll hang around and pretend i know what i'm

Uilliam mac Fearchar

I've created it as an aide to helping people wanting to register heraldry
in the SCA. We'll use it as a collection of tools to help create and design
your herald designs whether for a Device, Arms, or Badge. In order to register
a heraldic design in the SCA you will also need to have a registerable name
to register it with and we can work on that as well.
There are a number of features that can be used in this Yahoo Group. Of course
there is the Mailing list and Archived Message base of which this message
is a part.
There is also a Photo Section where we will be able to post ideas and potential
designs we are working on and discussing. We'll set up a separate folder
for each person's designs. Actually you can do that yourself. The Graphics
can be in GIF or JPEG formats. Do not worry if you are not a great artist,
simple sketches work well enough for communicating ideas. If you do not have
other software Microsoft Paint which comes with Windows is sufficient to
use. Just save the image you create as either a GIF file or a JPEG file.
I'll see about having a blank shield graphic that you can download to use
if you want.
There is Links Section where I have included what I hope are a number of
useful links. While there are important links on the main Links Page, there
are also sub folders that are important. Name Research includes links useful
for researching a name you can register. The Rules of Heraldry has links
to pages with information on Heraldry if you are interested in learning more
about it. Rolls of Arms has links to Armorials and Rolls of Arms of different
sorts. They are catalogues of images of Coats of Arms. I have included Rolls
of Arms both from the SCA and from the Historical Period the SCA covers.
The SCA Rolls can give you an idea of what people have registered in the
SCA. The Historical Rolls illustrate the style and feel we are trying to
recreate in our heraldic devices. The Other section includes some pages with
information on trying to give the feel of some other cultures to the European
Heraldic practice that is followed in the SCA among other things.
Eventually we will probably find use for the Database section and Polls.
Don't worry if your messages don't show up immediately on the mailing list.
Sometimes there can be delays. They'll make it.
I do hope to be able to work with people in person at events, heraldry workshops,
or even private sessions. There is also the option of using the various instant
messenger programs. I have accounts on most of the major ones. We could surf
some of the Rolls of Arms online and bounce ideas off each other live in
addition to via e-mail. Private e-mail is also there to be used.
Once More, Welcome to my Heraldry Shop!
Sincerely,
Wade
