The Canada Japan Society is proud to present Yoji Yamadas modern take on the
samurai period drama (jidai-geki) genre; The Twilight Samurai.
This moving film tells the tale of a lowly samurai, Seibei Ikawa (Hiroyuki
Sanada) who toils under great financial hardship to raise his two daughters
after his wifes untimely death. Hes nicknamed Twilight as he always
returns home directly after work to care for his family, never socializing with
his colleagues. Seibei reluctantly becomes drawn into conflict to preserve the
honour of Tomoe (Rie Miyazawa), the sister of his childhood friend Michinojo
(.Mitsuru Fukikoshi) Set in the late Tokugawa Era, the film brilliantly brings
to life the plight of the average samurai, who with no wars to fight have been
reduced to struggling for survival and struggling with the uncertainty of their
future.
Yoji Yamadas patient but brilliant storytelling, along with masterful
performances by Hiroyuki Sanada and Rie Miyazawa propelled "Twilight Samurai" to
sweep the 2003 Japanese Academy Awards, winning 12 categories, including best
picture, director, screenplay, actor, actress, supporting actor and
cinematography. In Hollywood the film was also nominated for Best International
Film in that years Academy Awards.

The night also includes a post party event at Everest Caf辿, where attendees can
discuss the film, practice their English/Japanese, meet new people, and have
some fun.
Since 2004 The Canada Japan Society has been screening Japanese movies at the
National Film Board theatre as part of our mandate to enhance understanding and
enjoyment of Canada Japan relations. We present a wide range of Japanese films,
from the classics to the latest in comedy, drama, action, and horror. All movies
are in Japanese with English subtitles, and the feature film is always preceded
by a Canadian short film from the National Film Board.
The Canada Japan Society was established in 1981 and is an independent,
volunteer driven non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing relations and
understanding between Canada and Japan.

(IMK) of 2009. Why, you may ask? Well, it's because we've got our ever famous
BONENKAI (end of year party) coming up instead in December (stay tuned for more
details).Ichimoku-kai literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since
1995 it has been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event,
naturally on the first Thursday of every month. It is a great place to make new
friends, practice your English and/or Japanese, informally network, learn more
about life in Canada and Japan, and most of allhave fun! Our attendees are
usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50 percent Japanese, all with a common
interest or connection with Japan.. At Ichimoku-kai you will receive special

It's October and that means its time for the Canada Japan Society's Halloween
Movie Night.
This year we are showing Masato Harada's 2001 controversial supernatural drama
"Inugami". The film stars Yuki Amami, one of the most popular "around 40"
actresses in Japan these days, along with Atsuro Watabe, Kazuhiro Yamabe,
Kenichi Yajima Keiko Awaji and Kanako Fukaura. This drama mixes ancient myth and
ceremony with the breathtaking beauty of rural Shikoku in telling the tale of a
family's inherited curse and descent into madness. Amami stars as Miki
Bounomiya, unjustly mistrusted and hated by the isolated village she lives in
due to her bloodline's ancient curse.
While not really scary, it definitely is very strange. Winner of multiple awards
in festivals around the world, you won't want to miss some compelling
performances, unique direction, and visually stunning cinematography.

Since 2004 The Canada Japan Society have been screening Japanese movies at the
National Film Board theatre as part of our mandate to enhance understanding and
enjoyment of Canada Japan relations. We present a wide range of Japanese films,
from the classics to the latest in comedy, drama, action, and horror. All movies
are in Japanese with English subtitles, and the feature film is always preceeded
by a Canadian short film from the National Film Board. Our film nights also
always include a post party event at Everest Caf辿, which enables attendees to
talk about the film, practice their English/Japanese, meet new people, and have
some fun.

Ichimoku-kai literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since 1995 it
has been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event, naturally
on the first Thursday of every month.
It is a great place to make new friends, practice your English and/or Japanese,
informally network, learn more about life in Canada and Japan, and most of
allhave fun! Our attendees are usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50
percent Japanese, all with a common interest or connection with Japan.
At Ichimoku-kai you will receive special food and drink discounts and have the
chance to win some exciting door prizes.
This month we're featuring a special live jazz performance by the Dennis Sung
Trio! Our house band (Bonito Beat) might be hanging around as well...

The Canada Japan Society is proud to present, as the opening film of our
2009/2010 MOVIE NIGHT Season, Takeshi Kitano's acclaimed 1993 gangster classic
"Sonatine". Beautifully shot and acted, this early work from Kitano highlights
both his acting and directing, resulting in a haunting tale of a middle aged
gangster's dissillusionment with his success.....and ultimately his downfall.
The movie is filled with great cinematographic shots, humerous moments, and
often moving performances by Kitano, Aya Kokumai, Susumu Terajima and Ren Osugi.

National Film Board theatre as part of our mandate to enhance understanding and

The Canada Japan Society is proud to present, as the opening film of our
2009/2010 MOVIE NIGHT Season, Takeshi Kitano's acclaimed 1993 gangster classic
"Sonatine". Beautifully shot and acted, this early work from Kitano highlights
both his acting and directing, resulting in a haunting tale of a middle aged
gangster's dissillusionment with his success.....and ultimately his downfall.
The movie is filled with great cinematographic shots, humerous moments, and
often moving performances by Kitano, Aya Kokumai, Susumu Terajima and Ren Osugi.

National Film Board theatre as part of our mandate to enhance understanding and

トロント新移住者協会は日系文化会館共催のもと、8月30日に恒例の夏のBBQ
パーティーを日系文化会館で行いました。今年はトロント新移住者協会の日本
外務大臣表彰受賞を祝う記念のパーティーとなりました。
天候に恵まれ、トロント新移住者協会夏のBBQパーティー史上最大の411須佑
参加者が集まり夏の午後の親睦を楽しみました。
美味しい焼肉、ソーセージ、とうもろこし、冷たい果物などの食べ放題、さらに
かき氷やお菓子などの販売、各種出店、子供のゲーム、歌声合唱、ドア・プライズ
抽選などもあり、ビールも入って、皆で夏の午後を楽しく過ごしました。

The New Japanese Canadian Association (NJCA) with the Japanese Canadian
Cultural Centre (JCCC) held the annual summer BBQ party on August 30
at the JCCC. This year it was also a celebration of the NJCA receiving
the Japanese Foreign Ministry Appreciation Award.
Under a comfortable summer weather, 411 people came to join the party
and enjoyed the summer afternoon together. This was the largest crowd
in the history of the NJCA BBQ Party.
Everyone enjoyed the famous all-you-can eat BBQ meat, sausages, corns,
cold fruits etc. In addition, many booths offered many interesting
things from sweet shaved ice to Japanese sweets and others.
With drinks from cash bar, children's games, songs by Toronto Utagoe,
and door prizes, everyone had a great time in the summer afternoon.

Come celebrate the summer at The Canada Japan Societys Ichimokukai party on
August 6th.!
Ichimoku-kai literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since 1995 it has
been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event, naturally on
the first Thursday of every month.
It is a great place to make new friends, practice your English and/or Japanese,
informally network, learn more about life in Canada and Japan, and most of
allhave fun! Our attendees are usually around 50 percent Canadian and 50
percent Japanese, all with a common interest or connection with Japan.
At Ichimoku-kai you will receive special food and drink discounts and have the
chance to win some exciting door prizes.
This month we feature another live performance from Bonito Beat, a great
Japanese guitar/vocal duo from Toronto.

トロント新移住者協会 外務大臣表彰受賞
日本外務省は、日本と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に特に顕著な功績のあった
個人および団体について、その功績を称えるとともに、その活動に対する一層の
理解と支持を日本国民各層にお願いする目的で、毎年外務大臣表彰を行っています。

今回表彰される団体部門で、トロント新移住者協会が、長年にわたり日本とカナダ
との相互理解の促進に貢献して来た功績を認められ、受賞することとなりました。
トロント新移住者協会は、１９７６年以降約３２年の長きに亘り、移住者が事故や
病気に見舞われた際の各種緊急連絡の代行、日系人共同墓地の設置、言語や慣習が
異なる異国での子育てを支援するための電子メールフォーラム主催等に尽力し、
移住者が異国で安心して暮らせる環境整備に多大な努力をしてきました。また、
日本語教育プロジェクト、日本語学校運営、ボランティアによる日本語の本や映像
の貸し出し等を行い、日本文化、言語及び慣習の継承に多大な貢献をしてきました。

今回、このような努力が日本政府から認められたことを誠に光栄に思います。
正式な表彰受賞伝達式が8月6日、新移住者協会理事会理事・加盟団体代府渋真堯
歴代会長出席のもと、日系社会の主な団体の代表、日系・カナダのメディアの皆さん

を招請して総領事公邸で行われます。また、国際協力機構理事長(元国連難民高等
弁務官)緒方貞子氏より祝辞の手紙を頂きました。
この場をお借りして、移住者社会・日系社会の皆さんのトロント新移住者協会に
対する長年のご支援とご理解に感謝します。今後この表彰受賞を祝う行事を企画
したいと考えています。その際は皆さんとご一緒に喜びを分かち合い、将来への
更なる糧にしたい、と望んでいます。

To everyone in the Toronto Ijusha and Nikkei communities,

The Toronto New Japanese Canadian Association receives Japanese
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Appreciation Award
Every year, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents
Appreciation Awards to individuals and organizations that contributed
in establishing and maintaining the friendly relationships between
foreign countries and Japan. The award is to express appreciation
for their achievements, as well as to ask for their understanding
and continued support of the Japanese people.
One of the recipients of this year is the Toronto New Japanese
Canadian Association (NJCA) in recognition of its contribution in
promoting the mutual understanding between Canada and Japan in the
past.
The NJCA was established in 1976. Since then, in the last 32 years,
the NJCA contributed to the Ijusha and Nikkei communities by acting
on behalf of the Japanese government to aid Japanese nationals in
distress such as victims of accidents or illness, establishing the
Nikkei community cemetery, running a forum to support young families
in raising children in a society with a different language and customs,
and providing an environment where Ijusha can feel comfortable in
the foreign country, as well as other activities
. .
In addition, the NJCA greatly contributed in maintaining and promoting
Japanese language and culture by hosting the Japanese language
education project, running Japanese language schools and operating
a library of Japanese books and tapes, all by volunteers.
The NJCA is grateful that these efforts are fully recognized.
The formal presentation of the award will be held on August 6 at the
official residence of Consul General of Japan in Toronto. The entire
NJCA board will be at the ceremony as well as past NJCA presidents．
In addition, the representatives from major organizations in the
Japanese Canadian community and the Nikkei and Canadian media are
invited for the occasion. The NJCA also received a letter of
congratulation from Ms Sadako Ogata, the president of the Japan
International Cooperation Agency and a former United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees.
The NJCA would like to express its sincere appreciation for the
continued support and understanding of the members of the Japanese
Canadian community. We believe that it is most appropriate that the
entire Japanese Canadian community shares in the celebration of the
award. We are planning to have events in which everyone in the
community can join in the celebrations, and we are looking forward to
even greater compliments in the future.
