Hey I,m a keen Jolson fan, always have been n guess I always will.
Was a bit embarrassing really, when I was younger all the other kids sang all
the modern songs n all I could sing Jolsons.
Lived it listened n watched everything I could, my kids grew up singing Jolsons
songs n I loved it,I,ve done a few old age pensioners rest homes, a few clubs n
lots of free n easys n still get up now at every chance, n I aint bad even if I
say it myself, still get a standing ovation n calls for more.
I,m going to the Belgrade Theatre tonight to see Clive Baldwin, I hope I,m not
let down n he brings a tear to my eye like the great man his-self do,s.
Will let you know, bye for now, n hello to all you club members.
                         Rod.

George has his own site at:

Over to you George....

At this time allow me to announce my appointment as the Canadian Representative
for the INT'L AL JOLSON SOCIETY. I succeed DIANE STAUFFER who, due to health
reasons, had to leave her position. I trust that I shall be half as good as she
was in the post.

I would like to thank JIM BROCKSON for the appoin't & JÁN HERNSTAT for his faith
in me. Thanks also to SUE NESTOR for the assistance she is providing me. The
Society wouldn't be the Society without the likes of the late NORMAN BROOKS,
CLIVE BALDWIN, TONY BABINO, RICHARD HALPERN & others [see below] so I thank them
also.

I joined the Society in 1977 under the leadership of the late IRVIN R. WARWICK &
developed a friendship with him that ended with his death. Since then, I have
been in conversation with some of the leading figures in the Society.

Jolson and Friends Blog published a new entry entitled "Jolson and Friends Blog: Breaking the Sound Barrier, Vitaphone Part II" on 4/27/2008 2:58:29 PM, written by Brian Marcus Decker.

Jolson and Friends Blog: Breaking the Sound Barrier, Vitaphone Part II

Media

"Aldous Huxley, the famous author and clearly not a Jolson fan said of The Jazz Singer, "The film concludes with a scene in the theatre with Mammy mine in the stalls and the son warbling down at her the most penetratingly vulgar mammy song that it has ever been my lot to hear - my flesh crept as the loudspeaker poured out his sodden words, that greasy sagging melody. I felt ashamed of myself for listening to such a thing, for even being a member of the species to which such things are addressed."

Yowza, Yowza, Yowza. This is Brian Marcus Decker, for the Jolson and Friends Blog located on the web at www.JolsonBlog.com, which is the first tech-nostalgic blog dedicated to the musical influences of Al Jolson and Friends.

Well folks, it's now time to start anew with another insightful journey down memory lane. Today I am fortunate enough to be in the home of Ron Hutchinson, one of the co-founders of the Vitaphone Project. Due to their extensive efforts working with private collectors, university film archives, the Library of Congress, Warner Bros. and Turner Entertainment they have successfully preserved hundreds of early Vitaphone and Vitaphone Variety film performances. Included in this illustrious Vitaphone catalog include performances by the legendary Al Jolson, Burns & Allen, Baby Rose Marie, Ruth Etting, Weber & Fields, The Seven Little Foys, Georgie Price, George Jessel, Joe E. Brown, Sissle & Blake, Jack Benny, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, William Demarest, Joe Frisco, Jack Norworth, Molly Picon, Rudy Vallee and many, many more.

We will also have an opportunity to discuss with Ron Hutchinson of the Vitaphone Project the overall involvement with the recent Commemorative 80th Anniversary Edition of the legendary film, The Jazz Singer: This three-disc deluxe DVD EDITION is nothing short of fantastic. For Jolson fans and anyone interested in early 20th century performing arts, music, film and nostalgia, this is a must buy. This incredible three-disc collection includes more than several hours of digital transferred and immaculately refurbished soundtracks from the original Vitaphone Sound on Disc recordings. This special collection also includes behind the scene Jazz Singer photo cards, souvenir programs that include reviews, news articles, a Vitaphone brochure, replicas of postcards that even Al Jolson sent to Jack Warner following the death of his brother and more.

Jolson Blog: Breaking the Sound Barrier, Vitaphone Interview with Ron Hutchinson Part II

"Contrary to many of the myths, it was not a huge hit initially. It got some scathing reviews. But, a lot of that didn't matter, because it was like it didn't matter what the critics said. It mattered what the audiences and what the public said and felt. So, what happened was, this thing built. As theaters were wired across the country, the first film usually that the theater played was The Jazz Singer. And people who had seen it silent wanted to come back and see the sound version. So, this thing was in release really for almost two years, kind of building on itself. "

Brian Marcus Decker: There were many critics in 1927 who were not impressed (at all) with The Jazz Singer. For example, Aldous Huxley, the famous author and clearly not a Jolson fan said of The Jazz Singer, "The film concludes with a scene in the theatre with Mammy mine in the stalls and the son warbling down at her the most penetratingly vulgar mammy song that it has ever been my lot to hear - my flesh crept as the loudspeaker poured out his sodden words, that greasy sagging melody. I felt ashamed of myself for listening to such a thing, for even being a member of the species to which such things are addressed."

It is also interesting to note another director who worked and successfully sued Jolson on a film, which was never released, was also a strong advocate against talking pictures. This is of course, D.W. Griffith who said, "We don't want and never shall the human voice in our movies".

I find these quotes very polarizing and disturbing, but at the same time fascinating. I find it hard to separate Jolson from the sound portion of the overall experience. Can you provide us with any context for this type of negative sentiment for The Jazz Singer and other early Vitaphone sound films?

Ron Hutchinson: Well, first of all, and one of the things, Brian, that people forget is, most people who first saw The Jazz Singer, saw it as a completely silent film. Now, why was that? Well, when it came out in October of 1927, do you know how many theaters could show it in sound? Two. So, you think of the United States and then I think in 1927, there were still only 200 or 300 theaters in the entire country, mainly on the east and west coasts. So, first of all, people forget that most people the first time; because this was one of these films that came back over and over again, saw it as a silent.

Contrary to many of the myths, it was not a huge hit initially.

And the reviews didn't matter. People knew what they were getting. They expected it. His records always sold well, from The Jazz Singer. People forget that. It was the first film, because it was one of the first sound films where commercial 78's for the home, the home recordings, had some of the songs from the feature. So, there was already this cross-marketing.

So, yeah, if you look back, this was not like every review was, this is awesome. The times have changed. People generally said that the sound quality was the best they had ever heard. It was very realistic. But, they certainly would criticize Jolson's acting skills. And I think The Herald Tribune said something about how it was maudlin, dripping in maudlin sentiment or something like that. Didn't matter, didn't matter. The public had spoken, when they saw this film.

Brian Marcus Decker: It also seems there were many film luminaries who continued to make silent movies based on their belief that talkies might be, in fact, a short lived fad. For example, I consider Modern Times to be absolutely a perfect film and certainly one of Charlie Chaplin's best. While the film has a recorded musical score, composed by Chaplin, there is only one instance of dialogue in which a salesman puts on a recorded disk for his spoken dialog. This seemed to really poke fun at the film industry, especially since Chaplin himself was a managing partner at United Artists. But, what I find so amazing is that the film was released in the United States on February 5, 1936 (approximately nine years after the release of The Jazz Singer).

Are there other examples of important silent movies being released after The Jazz Singer in 1927?

Ron Hutchinson: Well, The Jazz Singer, of course, was made during the late spring and summer of 1927 and released October 6th, as we know, and the effects of The Jazz Singer started to be felt for the following, let's say, six or eight months. So, it debuts in October. What happened was, keep in mind, all the other studios, nobody else other than Warner Bros. is making any sound films. Fox is starting to do their newsreel, but really wasn't getting into any talking shorts or features and so on. So, the rest of the industry is still silent in January of 1928.

January 1928, all the other producers, Universal, Paramount, not Fox, but all the other ones, got together and they had a screening of The Jazz Singer. And Sam Goldwyn was there and his daughter relates that when the lights went up after, there was dead silence and extreme panic. And they basically knew that they were looking at wiring studios, wiring theaters, changing their entire industry completely. So, they all bonded together, hating the Warner brothers for doing this, resenting their success and said, "We're not going to go into talking pictures individually unless all of us go in together." And they had an agreement, where for the next year they would make nothing but silent pictures and if they all agreed, they'd decide on a system, not to be Vitaphone, in other words to get back at the Warner brothers, and then they would go in.

So, in fact, during 1928, the first half, it was business as usual, making silent pictures with all of the top stars of the period. Only Warner Bros. and then First National, which they bought, were making any films with either music and sound effects synchronized or occasional talking sequences. However, by the end of 1929, every film from every studio is sound. So, obviously, in that very short window, you can see that they kind of saw that there was no turning back. They had to do it. They went on the sound-on-film system, what was known as Movietone, that we still use today.

There were really only a few stars that held out. Chaplin owned his studio, owned his films, basically could take all the time he wanted. But, nobody else really held out after 1929. I think Lon Chaney and Greta Garbo were the last two American stars to make talking films in 1930, The Unholy Three, and he died, ironically, of throat cancer in August of 1930. So, he only made one talking picture, and then Anna Christie with Greta Garbo. But, all the others, by late '29 or '30, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton in the early 30's and so on, all were making talking pictures. So, you weren't going to be in the film business if you weren't making talkies by 1930.

Jolson Blog: Vitaphone Project Interview Part III: May 25, 2008

  • Prior to the release of The Jazz Singer, it was rumored that Warner Bros. was having severe financial difficulty and was potentially even facing bankruptcy. How risky was that Warner Bros.' investment in Vitaphone and is that story even true?
  • Can you give us a context of exactly how financially successful The Jazz Singer was?
  • In 1926 Charles Divine from the Evening Telegraph called "Vitaphone-the miracle of sound." Another contemporary journalist at the time referred to Vitaphone as "the eighth wonder of the world". Do you consider the technology behind Vitaphone revolutionary or evolutionary?
  • What factors drove that mass adoption of sound-on-disc technology and that evolution to sound-on-film?
  • What role did George Groves play with Vitaphone and what were some of his award winning achievements and contributions to the overall film industry?

When Jolson Was King: (Paperback) by Richard Grudens

Richard Grudens has written an entertaining and informative (must read) book for anyone interested in the legendary, Al Jolson "The World's Greatest Entertainer".

"The book contains many facets of Jolson' career including those around him, his competition, employers, and comments from those he inspired enough to form their own careers, the issue of minstrel, blackface performers, fabled stories of the famed Friar's Club, a chapter of the infamous Shubert Brothers, and chapters covering Jolson's experiences in film, radio and his extensive USO travels. Covered too are vignettes of the theatres in which Jolson performed, and of those great theatrical competitors like the Barrymore's and where they were voicing their talents while Jolson was pulling them in at the Winter Garden, and a full feature on Jolson's films from the first talkie, The Jazz Singer to his famed bio-pics The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again." - Richard Grudens

Of the two movies mentioned on the led page.... what was your favorite
part and why? Who was your favorite actor of actress?

For me, the Anniversary Song segment in the Jolson Story was just so
beautiful.... when I was invited to the wedding of a Jewish friend of
mine, I supplied the real thing (well, almost) in the form of a Jolson
tape. They were going to use a Tom Jones version!

What about any other move featuring Jolson? .... or even Clive
Baldwin like in the "Last Great Vaudville Show"?

You made me love you! (((didn't wanna do it)))

Hey All,

I know that I've not posted much here in the last little bit, it is
because I'm taking another approach in a round about way.

I've become involved with the disability movement, primarily because I
use a wheelchair myself.

I'm promoting an Ability Pride Awarness Parade, A Pride in Ability
Networking and Trades Expo and a Pride in Ability Centre. I've hooked
up with others that like this idea, including the city I live in, and a
battle of the bands is not out of the question to raise money for the
cause.

Ok.... this is the idea, I'd like to get Clive over here to entertain
during the day. An historical trip through time focusing on different
eras! I have hooked up with the people that can do it too!

That's it for now.... gotta run!
Douglas

Hey Everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted any updates. Main reason.... there
have not been any! However, I intend for that to change in short order.

I hope my friend George will help to contact the many groups on the
list I've compliled and that I am trying to get involved in building an
audience for Clive.

We are now an even dozen. For the new folks and those that have not
been welcomed formerly, WELCOME!

I hope you have enjoyed the new images of the 1933 Caddy, much like the
one Jolson himself purchased. That diecast model is not bad either,
but the Crawford car should have been the free one, not the Jolson car!

That's it for now!
Best Regards
Douglas

If you've not seen the TV commercial, a die cast model company have
come out with two 1933 V-16 Cadillac Fleetwood model cars, the one
being Joan Crawford's (if I recall correctly) Cadi Limo, and the
second.... a replica of Al Jolson's own 1933 V-16 Cadillac Fleetwood!

I did some searching and I found the following link and I have
provided you with four pics from the page. Hey.... the car is for
sale! Any takers? Hey Clive.... wanna take the act one step further?

http://www.barrett-jackson.com/auctionresults/common/cardetail.asp?
id=166014

Transmission: MANUAL
Cylinders: 16
Engine Size: 452
Horsepower: 165

In 1930 Cadillac had decided to mount its assault on Packard's lines,
with the introduction of the V-16. Though plagued, as all luxury car
manufacturers, by the effects of the stockmarket crash, Cadillac
could still afford to invest in the new multi-cylinder engine
technology, thanks to the relative strength of its behemoth parent
General Motors. The V-16 displacing 452 cu.in. and producing 165 HP,
would remain the power standard-bearer for Cadillac through 1940. By
1933 Cadillac V-16 offerings were down to ten Fleetwood models from
33 in the introductory year 1930. Total production for the year would
be 126 of all styles. This car as Cadillac would term is the "All-
Weather Phaeton" most other manufactures would call this style a
Convertible Sedan. This is one of few known remaining examples.
Leather interior. Completely restored auto, including engine. 250
miles since major overhaul. Judged 100 point car, First Place in CCCA
1998, First Place National Cadillac Club, First Place Senior AACA
1998. A five year restoration was completed in 1998. The body for
this car is a genuine body transferred to this genuine original
chassis.

In 1977 I saw an add for the INT'L AL JOLSON SOCIETY in a fan magazine that I was reading. The magazine had a feature article on the World's Greatest Entertainer & the add was put in by the Society's photo director, the late OTIS R. LOWE. I contacted him & he put me in touch with its president, the late IRVIN R. WARWICK. I immediately joined. The Society was then based just outside Montréal.

Fast forward thirty years to 2007. For the first tyme the Society's annual convention is being held in Canada, just outside Toronto, & I get to attend my first convention!
The big day arrives.

The convention's unofficial opening was Thursday night [2007 May 24] at the bar in the Stage West Hôtel on Dixie Road near the ~401~. This I am unable to attend. It is an informal gathering of members including JÁN HERNSTAT, ED GREENBAUM, TONY BABINO, ROBERT E. LEE, S. MICHAEL SIMMS & others. After this opening, Smikes [Mr Simms] travels to my flat to spend the evening.

The next morning, Friday, I place a telephone call to AaLia Kesari in Hamilton.  She plans to attend the afternoon festivities & needs assistance in getting to the hôtel. Traffic delays us &, she, Smikes & I arrive late for the tribute to her father, the late NORMAN BROOKS, who, himself had planned to attend. The presentation was written & presented by ED GREENBAUM, with audio clips by Norman himself. The clip from the film the Best Things in Life Are Free, in which Norman portrayed AL JOLSON was also shown. There was a surprise guest appearance by TONY BABINO who told the standing room audience of his first meeting with Norman & how it affected his career.

At the conclusion of the tribute, some two hours after it had begun, AaLia was presented with some mementoes of her father's career. Then an open discussion between her & the audience followed. To conclude this part of the festivities, AaLia sang three of her own compositions.

Due to the necessity of accompanying AaLia back to Hamilton, I missed the musical tribute to her father that evening. When I walked into the ballroom, Tony was already in full swing. What can I say? His performance was perfect & I lQQk forward to seeing him this coming November when he performs in Hamilton. Besides, Jolie, he also did impersonations of ELVIS PRESLEY & EDDIE CANTOR. He even did two DEAN MARTIN songs for me. I run a site for Dino at Delphi Forums. Tony had a performance in Long Island & so, left the hôtel early the following morning. I should also mention Smikes' assistance in getting me dinner as I arrived long after it had been served.

Due to my lack of sleep, I missed the afternoon presentation put on by PAUL BOWERS on Saturday. I arrived to early for the dinner & show & spent the extra tyme at the greeting table in the lobby. There, CLIVE BALDWIN made a surprise appearance! This was with the help of an iPOD owned by TRISH ELKINS! With her assistance, we were also entertained by SLIM DUSTY, HANK SNOW & ANDY STEWART!

The evening began with filet mignons, baby carrots, steamed string beans, roasted potatoes, bread, butter & a salade. This was followed by president JÁN HERNSTAT stepping up to stage & doing two numbers while awaiting the appearance of DAVE GROSS. To say that Mr Gross plays the piano is like saying that Mr DaVinci paints! He had accompanied Tony the night before & was returning to do more of the same. He was also receiving a special award. His acceptance speech qualifies him for the Oscar awards!

After the award, a film tribute to RUDY WISSLER, produced by ANDREA OBERHEIDEN, was shown. Rudy had also planned on attending. His wife & daughter were present. The tribute featured & interview with Rudy as well as some of his past performances at the convention. This was followed by S. MICHAEL SIMMS own tribute to Rudy when he sang U Made Me Love U.

Following Smikes was BILL CAMPBELL. Bill did a great job even though he was suffering from a cold at the tyme & had flown all the way in from Scotland. Bet his arms were tired! He wore a number of different hats including one like that worn by Jolie in Hallelujah I'm a Bum for a number of his renditions of Jolie tunes in his own special style. The best treat for me was being able to obtain an audio disc from him after the show. He's one of the nicest people I met & explained that he had not e mailed me `cause his wife wouldn't let him near the computer!

Next came RICHARD HALPERN & was I due for a surprise. His rendition of Jolie's scenes in the Jazz Singer was like watching the film itself! Not only that, as he saluted Jolie's early years up to the Jazz Singer, he was hardly still for a moment. Like Jolie himself! He even did a number of songs without the aid a of microphone & could be heard everywhere in the room. He was also wandering all over the room as he performed! I hope, that, like Tony, he will be returning to the area soon.

With the performance over I had to leave as I had a train to catch. I missed the Sunday morning festivities as I was simply too tired to get up. I would have had to leave at 05:00 to make it there on tyme. Later, in the afternoon, I did have a pleasant visit with GARY BIRKHOF, Canada's own Jolie tribute artist. Gary is based in Peterborough.

The convention was a definite success & number of folk finally got to meet me in person. What a thrill! Besides those already mentioned, it was a real treat for JOHN RENDON, DOROTHY GREENBAUM, STEVE GEORGE, *SKIP* MACK, BRUCE A . WEXLER, FRIEDA GROSS, TED SHUSTER & others. It was money worth spent. Next convention is in 0rlando, Florida, hosted by TOM NESTOR.

Greetings to George and a Hello to All Group Members,

Hey George,

What's the word on the IAJS Convention in Toronto? When it has taken

Have you been in contact with Clive lately? Any word? When the IAJS

manner, the Royal Canadian Legion Branches etc.

Have a fine one all!
