~~Bridge~~
As the ship came into weapons rang of the asteroids, Carson brought it
to a stop and began his own set of tests on the new nav system. The
upgrades gave the maneuvering thrusters more power, but the increased
weight made the changes difficult to notice.
It was good to be at the helm again. As much as Carson had enjoyed
flying the nimbler shuttle for a few days, it was nice to be back at
his post.

FCL-06 Meridian
At
0600 sharp, the double paned glass doors of sickbay slid open to admit
Meridian's XO. She glanced around the room, all surfaces gleaming white in
pristine condition. Even though she missed the simplicity of the old days, it
was very nice to be on a brand new ship.
Yue soon
spotted the doctor. He was still wearing that ridiculous hat. "Doctor
Corbett. Are you ready?"
“Welcome
to my sickbay ma’am.” Corbett said to her as he took off his hat and bowed
deeply. “I see your right on time Commander so I’ll turn you over to my medics
who will be seeing you first. I’ll need your basic vital signs, blood work, as
well as hearing and visual acuity tests before we start your physical exam and
stress test.
She
nodded and took a seat on the biobed. She had been through this routine many
times before in her career. She understood the need, but that didn't take away
the annoyance.
Corbett
came back from his office and held a PADD. “Your full name it is Yue Wang, correct?”
He asked marking the chart.
"My
name is pronounced Yuè," she said, emphasizing the downward tonal
inflection on the syllable. She was used to native speakers of Earth Standard
mispronouncing it. "In my traditional language, it means Moon. You may
address me as Commander Wang." The frigid look she gave him wasn't so much
a cold stare, as that of a determined officer wanting to establish her
authority. Either way, it was clear that she wasn't planning to be on familiar
terms with the good doctor.
“And
you can address me as Dr. Corbett.” He said annoyed at the woman’s attitude. He
was trying not to be adversarial, but after last night his mood was very dark
indeed. "I need access to your skin. Could you please lower your suit for me?"
At
his request, Moon undid the zipper of her jumpsuit and slipped out of the top
half, revealing a feminine but well-muscled form beneath the Starfleet issue
halter top. The toned biceps were evidence that she exercised regularly.
“You’ve
got good musculature.” Corbett said as he made another mark in the chart.
The
view of her back was more stunning than her front. An intricately drawn image
of a traditional Oriental dragon was inked on her back. It was an exquisite bit
of artwork.
“That’s
a nice tattoo ma’am, very intricate.” He said making a note in her chart.
"A
reminder. That is all," she answered coldly. A reminder of someone,
someone special, but this was a physical evaluation, not a psychological one.
"Do you need anything else for your examination, Doctor?"
“Yes
there is a lot more. The tattoo I just noted well it’s intricacy tells me it was
done in ink not laser. I also do not see it noted on your last physical exam,
which tells me it’s either new or your ship’s doctor was lazy. Either way because
it is ink it was done with a needle, so I’m ordering a liver function test and
a hepatitis screen on you.”
"What??" She shot him a glare. "I have had it for years. You don't have to waste the time on your test."
“Listen
I don’t care how much time this wastes for you.” Corbett said back to her in a
calm but terse tone. “I am a lot of things and most of them negative, but when
it comes to my patients nothing is more important to me. I care about your
health and wellbeing so I trust no one, but myself. You may hate every minute
of this, but if anything happens to you under my care I want to make damn sure
I know everything about you medically. That way I can assure you I will
institute the right care."
Yue sized him up for a moment. Every vibe she was picking up from him was misogynistic and arrogant. But his argument had an element of reason to it. If so, the doctor would prove to be a good ship mate after all. "Very well. I will trust your professional opinion."
“Apology
accepted.” Corbett said while he adjusted his hand scanner. “Now the scanner
shows your heart and respiratory rates are excellent; however, that is the time
when we get lazy. I want to do one final test and that is a stress test. A lot
of athletes have died because there have been anatomical defects to their
hearts that was not caught, but they could have been if the doctor just did an exercise
test.”
"As you say."
-----
Once
the exercise test was done and Corbett felt comfortable that there wasn’t any
issues he told her she could zip up her uniform.
“Here
are Commander Wang’s lab reports.” Walter Harris said handing Corbett the
report.
Corbett
nodded as he took the report and looked it over. “Commander how long have you
been around warp engines.”
"My entire life. I was born and raised on a freighter. Why?"
“Well
two of your lab results are slightly abnormal.” Corbett said looking up at
Moon. “Your GGT and AFP are elevated a bit. This indicates to me that you have a
slight liver dysfunction. And before you ask your Hepatitis screen was negative.
This might be nothing, or it could be related to delta radiation exposure. So I
want to schedule you back here in a day or two for a scan.”
"A day or two? You can't do it now?"
“Trust
me I’d love to do it today,” Corbett said a bit sarcastically. “But my Imaging
Chamber is down and your night shift didn’t think it important enough to send
someone out to immediately fix it.”
"What??" The agitation in her voice sounded different than through the rest of the examination. That bit of news brought out a special sort of anger. "Who did your men talk to? That sort of refusal is unacceptable. I will have your chamber looked at immediately." “Thank
you that would be appreciated. We’ll get you in as soon as it’s fixed. Don’t
worry though if something is brewing in your liver. I’ve caught it early enough
to correct it.” Corbett smiling trying to let her know he wasn’t worried at all.
The smile did little to ease her agitation, but deep down she appreciated the gesture - even if her half-scowl said otherwise. "Ok. Let me know. I will go roll some heads for you."

Corbett lay
down on his bunk and tried to sleep, but the words he shared with Otto kept
ringing in his head.
“Have
you ever thought of settling down, maybe with your Orion friend?”
“You
are a true romantic sar.”
“No
not really. It’s just seems that every time I see you your either with a
different woman, or off to see one.”
“It
is an occupational hazard of being a professional scoundrel.”
“Have
you ever thought why that is?”
“I
know why that is sar. However, it is a tale for another time.”
Tossing
around in his bed Corbett knew he wasn’t going to sleep anytime soon, so
he got up and hit the underside of the lip to the top of his humidor. Turning
to his vidscreen he inserted the disk he had taken from the secret compartment.
He watched as
the screen lit up with the scene of a bright day and a red sky that cast an
eerie glow throughout the stones of the circular ceremonial grounds. He watched
himself come through the main entrance and walk to the center. He
remembered how the stone fire pit had made the unnaturally hot air seem like a
blast furnace. He watched himself hit the gong that was poised above the pit
and step back.
He heard the
bells in the background get louder indicating that the wedding party was
advancing. He watched himself on the screen and the sweat that was pouring from
him. He remembered hoping he wouldn’t pass out halfway through the
ceremony. He had taken tri-ox and a thermoregulator, but the robes he wore seemed
to counter their effect and make his body steam.
He saw the
wedding party enter and T’Lauris still took his breath away. Never had a
woman captivated him so.
He stopped
the playback and stared at the picture of her which filled up his vidscreen.
She had been everything to him. Even now the pain was almost too much to bear.
The comm.
unit on his desk went off startling him. “Corbett here.” He yelled
into it as he wiped a single tear from his cheek.
“Sorry
to wake you doc., but we got a problem with the Imaging Chamber. It looks like
the central processor went out.” The voice of Jimmy Marx said.
“Well
sar why don’t you call engineering and have them replace it.”
“They
say it’s not really a night shift priority and are turfing it over to the
day shift.” Marx said his voice annoyed.
“Well
that is unacceptable.” Corbett said anger tingeing his voice. “I
think I need to remind them if a freak accident happens and my scanner is down
someone is going to be screwed and it might just be one of them. I’m on
my way down. Corbett out.”
Stopping by
the door he picked up his black hat, smoothed the brim and headed out.

The turbolift door swished open and Yue took her first step onto the Meridian bridge as her XO. The Captain turned in his chair, looking very pleased with the moment. "Ms. Wang, we have arrived at the asteroid belt. Ms. Kretchnikov is about to test her new toys. Care to watch the fun?"
"Of course." She answered with a nod.
She made her way around to the starboard side of the bridge, pausing by the Armory station to check the gauges over LtCmdr Kretchnikov's shoulder. While there was nothing fundamentally different about the new phase cannons, there was still a notable power increase that had the her curious as a CEO. She wondered if the new CAO was going to push the limits to try and make herself noticed.
The word was that Kretchnikov was replacing big shoes. Cmdr Frasier was a decorated Starfleet veteran. The events of his illness and departure from the ship were shrouded in mystery, happening suddenly on their return from the space battle. From what she had read in the ship's logs, he wasn't the only one who had left the ship suddenly under... mysterious... circumstances.
Sailors of old might have latched onto the rumors and thought of the ship as being cursed. Possibly.
Fortunately, Yue had grown up in space - literally. The child of boomers. She would always be more comfortable with humming metal underfoot and the crisp hint of scrubbed air. She always missed that special smell that space had when she was forced to go planetside.
She settled into
the seat at the forward engineering station and checked her monitors. "All system are go," she reported. "EPS conducers in armory conduits are primed." It was time to find out what their upgraded ship could do.

After getting reports from Wang, Kretchnikov and Bones, Rog had made his initial status report. Leaving the space dock had gone flawlessly. While he had been sure of the weapons status before he had asked Kretchnikov, he had asked her as a matter of course. He had given Sheppard coordinates for the Hood asteroid belt. The belt was fairly close to Earth and had been in use as a target range, for a number of years now. It should provide a chance for Kretchnikov to put her people through their paces.
He sat in the captain's chair looking at the asteroid belt. There were a number of medium to large rocks out there. Rog turned to Kretchnikov and said, "When you're ready Ms. Kretchnikov."
Looking at Sheppard he said, "Mr. Sheppard, keep us at a safe distance from the belt. No sense in taking chances with fragments."
Just then the lift door opened and Rog saw Commander Wang stepping out. He nodded and said, "Ms. Wang, we have arrived at the asteroid belt. Ms. Kretchnikov is about to test her new toys. Care to watch the fun?" He turned back to the main view screen and sat back to watch the show.

Turning to the tactical station. He said, "Ms. Kretchnikov, we should arrive at the nearest asteroid belt in about a day or so. I would like for you to have our weapons calibrated by then. Once there, we'll have some target practice to see how our new toys are working."
Illanya allowed herself an inward grin. As if she'd let the ship leave spacedock without being fully prepared. They were at war and the weapons could be needed at any time. This ship was ready. She'd made sure of that. Shesimply nodded to the Captain as she kept hersurveilance of the tactical station.

The hum of the warp core indicated that the ship was in motion. It was a comforting sound to any engineer on a starship. Just as the fusion reactions of a sun provided all energy needed to sustain life on a planet, the anti-matter-matter reactions in the warp drive sustained all life on board planet Meridian.
The engineers of Alpha shift were lined up for inspection for their new leader. It was an awkward feeling for most. LtCmdr Vanhanen had not been a by the book kind of guy. He was more a duct tape and baling wire engineer (for those who still knew a thing or two about antiquated technology). Formality didn't matter as much as getting the work done. It had fit with many on
board.
The stern-faced asian woman pacing around the bay appeared to be of a much different mind set. It wasn't that she felt like she was by the book, so much as that she expected things to be done her way. She had seen more and done more with an engine than anyone else in the room. At least that is how it felt as she stared everyone down one by one.
"You are all good engineers. You would not be here otherwise," she was saying. "I do not doubt that. But we need great engineers. Superb engineers. Perfect engineers. There is always room for improvement. We can always be more efficient. The day an engineer becomes satisfied with his equipment is the day that the human race stops to develop. You have been given the finest ship known to mankind. When we come back to Earth, we will have a better one still."
She turned on her heel and started pacing back the other way down
the line. A subtle smile actually crossed her lips as she delivered one last line to her speech.
"You have your duties. Dismissed." She happened to be standing beside Ensign Michaels as she dismissed everyone. "You have the bay. I will be on the bridge."
"Aye, Ma'am."
"My role as XO will keep me there more than what you might expect from your CEO. I will be counting on you to step up your management of the bay."
"Aye, Ma'am."
Yue had read through Michelle Michaels' file. A talented engineer, rated highly, but with a slightly timid. "Don't worry. You'll be fine," she said with a smile.
A surprised smile slowly crept onto Michaels' face. Perhaps the CEO wasn't going to be such a hard case after all? "Thank you, Ma'am."

After receiving acknowledgement of those
orders, he tapped the comm button. "Ms. Wang, keep me apprised of our
engine status." Switching channels he continued, "Bones, I trust you
enjoyed your shore leave. What is Sickbay's status?" As he awaited his
CEO's and his CMO's responses, Rog looked out at the stars. How he longed to be
out there once more.
End Snip>>
~~Sickbay~~
Corbett entered Sickbay just in time to hear the comm. go
off. “I enjoyed myself immensely Cap and Sickbay is all set.”
Turning Corbett saw his three medics smiling at him.
“Is there a reason the three of you look so amused?”
“Heard you met one of the new Ice Queens.”
Walter Harris the Surgical Tech said chuckling.
“Word is she’s not amused at your
antics.” Frank Merrick the Pharmacy Mate chimed in.
Corbett pushed his hat to the back of his head while he
appraised his corpsmen. “I assume you are talking about Commander Wang
and as I just met her I’m not sure what antics you are referring
too.”
“Your smoking lounge isn’t exactly
regulation.” Jimmy Marx the head medic answered.
Corbett had to chuckle at the three. “Gentlemen I
dare say there isn’t much associated with me that is regulation. Besides
the new duct work was necessary given the upgrades this ship has gone through.
Now my final word on this is that the young lady looks to me like the sort who
might enjoy a good cigar every now and again. Oh and by the way she is
scheduled at 0:600 for her primary shipboard physical so I expect all of you to
act professional and with great efficiency as you go about your duties while
she is here.”
Corbett raised an eyebrow at his medic. “If that is
the case sar please explain to me why I received a bill for 1,000 credits to
drain, scrub and sanitize my pool and my housekeeper threatened to quit.”
“Well um… I sort of um..” Harris
stammered.
“Never mind sar save it for another day.” He
said putting his hand up. “Right now I want to go over the new
modifications to the imaging chamber, the two new treatment beds and the brand
new surgical suite.”
“Yes sir.” The 3 medics said in unison.
~~Galley~~
It was close to 1 am when Corbett was satisfied that he
had tortured his medics enough and that his Sickbay could rival any the Fleet
had to offer. As he passed by the Galley on his way to his quarters the
door slid open and Otto the chef poked his head out.
“Ah just the person I was looking for.” The
chef said.
“And what can I do for you this evening sar?”
Corbett asked.
“Well doctor I just made a pot of Texas chili and
I’d like you try it.”
Corbett pushed his hat back and smiled from ear to ear.
“A taste of home sounds excellent right about now.”
“I thought it might.” Otto said. “Kind
of a way to ease you back into shipboard life.”
“I thank ya kindly sar.” Corbett said as he
sat down at one of the tables and waited while Otto brought back two steaming
bowls.
They ate in silence for a few minutes as Otto stayed
quiet while he watched Corbett savor the chili.
“My compliments sar, the flavor is
exceptional.”
“I’m glad you approve.” Otto said
smiling. “Do you mind if I ask you a personal question. It’s
something that’s been bothering me for a couple of days now.”
Corbett put his spoon down and appraised the chef.
“Alright sar, but please don’t be offended if I reserve the right
to refuse to answer.”
“Fair enough.” Otto remarked. “I heard
you went to see an old friend, an Orion female. I heard they have tremendous
power over men. I guess I’ve been wondering how you keep from getting
effected?”
“Their power is in chemicals they secrete called
pheromones.” Corbett said picking his spoon back up. “Men pick up
this scent and go mad over these women. What most people, hell most doctors
don’t know is that all mammals have an organ called the vomeronasal organ
that picks up pheromones and sends a signal to the brain. In humans it’s
located near the bottom of the septal wall, the bone dividing the nose. Well
sar I’ve had my nose rebuilt several times and that specialized organ has
been removed. So the short answer is I don’t process their pheromones,
ergo I am free of their spell.”
“I guess that’s lucky for you.” Otto
said though he sounded disappointed at such a simple answer.
“While Orion women do rely heavily on their
pheromones believe me it’s not the only characteristic they possess that
keeps men enthralled.” Corbett answered.
“Have you ever thought of settling down, maybe with
your Orion friend?” Otto asked.
“You are a true romantic sar.”
“No not really. It’s just seems that every
time I see you your either with a different woman, or off to see one.”
“It is an occupational hazard of being a
professional scoundrel.” Corbett replied.
“Have you ever thought why that is?” Otto
asked his voice truly sincere.
“I know why that is.” Corbett said sadly then
smiled. “However it is a tale for another time.”
“I’m always here to listen.” Otto said
picking up the bowls.
“I dare say if they ever put a mental health
councilor on Starships, I will definitely see to it that you get one of those
jobs.” Corbett said standing.
“No thanks. It would probably mean a promotion and
being stuck behind a desk. I like to follow my mother’s simple rule. Good
food along with a sympathetic ear and good common sense will always bring a
smile to someone.”
“She sounds like a wise woman sar and I must say
you have done her proud. Thank you for that little taste of home.”
“Sure thing, have a good night doc.”
“And you as well sar.” Corbett said as he
left the galley

A very satisfying week. I would like to welcome Josh's new character Cmdr. Yue 'Moon' Wang aboard. Let's keep this up on the new and improved Meridian's first real mission.
So, for the coming week...
The ship leaves Space Dock at last. We will be going on a shake down cruise and then a possible diplomatic mission which may include first contact possibilities.
The week began in the Meridian's Ready Room. Finney had found Vanhanen's replacement, Lt.Cmdr. Yue Wang. She was CEO aboard the Amaratsu. Aboard the Amaratsu, Wang was overseeing repairs when she got the call to meet Finney. Wang arrived promptly and they discussed her transfer as well as her promotion to Commander. In a short time, Yue 'Moon' Wang found herself the new CEO of the FCL-06 Meridian.
In Meridian's Armory, Kretchnikov accosted Koss and Palermo. She inquired as to where they'd been. Koss tried to explain, but Kretchnikov cut him off and gave the two orders to go over the upgrades and schedule gunnery training. She then asked what they and the captain had been doing. Koss stated that he didn't think they were at liberty to talk about it. This didn't sit well with Kretchnikov and she went to see the captain about it.
Meanwhile Corbett was on his way for shore leave on Luna. However, instead of going there, he went back to Earth. Specifically he went to his ranch in Texas. First though, he stopped to pick up Jimmy Marx at the Starfleet hospital. After sending him back to the Meridian, Corbett headed to Texas. Once there he met up with his Orion girlfriend. She handed him an envelope that had come to Fat Mickey's old club, a club that now belonged to her. The envelope contained a piece of paper with a single line upon it, 'We have a long memory', is all it said. Corbett asked the Orion who dropped it off at the club, but she didn't know. Corbett crumpled the note and the two proceeded to have a good time.
Back on the Meridian's Bridge, Kretchnikov arrived to talk with the captain. It would be their first meeting. Entering the Ready Room, she stood at attention and stated that she wanted to give Finney the status of the ships new defenses. When asked her opinion of her Armory personnel, she stated that she hadn't made a determination yet. She then asked him about the reason for taking the Armory personnel with him. Finney decided to take her into his confidence somewhat and gave her the basic reason for the mission, namely the desire to help Fraiser. Kretchnikov then expressed her displeasure regarding not being informed earlier. Finney replied that she hadn't been aboard when they left for the mission. He replied that he would in future naturally inform her of such decisions. He also reminded her that he was in command of the ship. Kretchnikov acknowledged this. The two then discussed the improvements that had been done to the Meridian's defenses.
The SIM week runs from 00:01 am EST on Sunday (05.01 am GMT) until Midnight EST Saturday/05:00 am GMT. If your log has not been counted in this weeks log count, it may have arrived after the 'deadline', but rest assured - it will be in next weeks report .

Log Count: This SIM runs from 0001 hours Sunday to 0000 hours Saturday(EST). Joint Logs count as one full log per participant to encourage their use.
One quality log per week, minimum, to keep the storyline progressing and the SIM active.
Please try and keep to this minimum standard; Real Life can always get in the way, but if you're committed to the Meridian, it's not too much to ask.
From the SIM Guide: "... a log is not really a log unless it advances the plot... Do not be afraid to carry the plot forward and do not always rely on your command staff to do it for you."
You can take advanced courses in Astro-Navigation, Medical and Senior Officer's Training. Just go to the TFE Academy Web Site at http://academy.firstera.net/ to learn more.
Please note - if you are unexcused for two weeks in a row, your position on Meridian is in jeopardy. Weekly logging is essential to keep the game going - please email the CO or XO if you are unable to meet this requirement and we will excuse you. This is basic courtesy, and is the bare minimum that is required of all players.
The
Shuttle-pod came to a smooth gliding stop at the end of the grappling arm,
shuddering gently as the docking clamps secured it with dull clanks. The
docking bay doors closed shut beneath it. A short burst of coolant exhaust
bathed its lower half in a light mist as atmosphere was returned to the bay and
normal pressure was restored.
Moments
later the shuttle hatch opened and a cowboy hat peeked out. Corbett slung his
bag over his shoulder and turned toward the pilot, a pretty young Ensign.
"Thank ya kindly for the lift miss, it was a true pleasure."
"You're
welcome, so you'll call me when you get back into dry dock?" She asked as
she gave him a lingering kiss
"It
will be my first act upon arrival." Corbett said smiling at her. Turning
back toward the deck he noticed Timo at the top of the gangway, with his bags
packed and a very pretty Asian woman staring at him. The woman wasn't smiling,
but Timo looked amused. A trained eye could tell, because one corner of his
mouth was curled upward three millimeters and the corresponding eye was closed
ever so slightly - a Finnish smirk.
"Velcome
back, Doctor. You're here just in time."
"Doctor?"
Yue asked in clear, but accented, English that showed a hint of surprise.
"Yaw."
Climbing
up from the shuttle-pod Corbett made his way over to the pair. "Thor,
rumor has it that you have resigned your commission sar."
"Yaw."
Timo confirmed with a nod. "I got a sick vife and a sick dad back on Earth
dat need me more dan Meridian does."
Corbett
understood, but didn't want to see his friend leave. "I go away for 5 days
and the whole damn world goes to hell and a handbasket."
Timo
had to agree with Stile’s sentiment. He was torn with this decision,
though he was certain it was the right one. A time came in every man's life
where tough choices had to be made. Neither direction was going to leave him perfectly
happy. He'd have to give up Meridian or give up his family. There was some old
adage about cake and eating that had something to do with that very thing. Timo
hadn't understood fully until this moment in time.
The
retiring CEO summed up all those thoughts with, "Life's a bear
sometimes."
"Unfortunately
that statement is more than true.” Corbett replied sadly and then turned
toward the Asian woman. “Where are my manners.”He said with a
toothy grin as he removed his hat in a gallant flourish. "Dr. Stile
Corbett at your service ma'am"
"Commander
Yue Wang," she answered in a cool, formal tone. Unlike the young Ensign
the good doctor had just left in the shuttle, she woman wasn't buying his Texas
charms. "I'm the new CEO and First Officer. You are our CMO, I
presume?"
“You
presume correctly ma’am.” Corbett said as he straightened from his
bow and placed his hat back on his head.
She looked the doctor up and down for what felt like a long moment. The man almost had the irreverent attitude of a boomer to him. She felt an instinctive urge to test his limits. "I hope you treat your patients on the biobed a bit more professional than the shuttle pilots."
Corbett
gave a half smile to the woman, which for those who knew him meant he was intrigued
and amused at the same time. “Well then I guess you’ll need to find
out for yourself ma’am. We can schedule an appointment at your convenience.”
"06:00. Get it out of the way early. I have a lot of catch up to do."
“06:00
tomorrow works well for me.” He said as he sprung his trap. “Please
make sure you eat nothing after 10pm tonight.”
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Now why would that be?"
“When
assuming a new duty station all new personnel regardless of rank are required
to undergo a physical exam and blood work to assure that the CMO is aware of
any preexisting conditions, or physical limitations said person may have acquired
since their last exam.” Corbett answered in a very businesslike way. “This
exercise will also give you firsthand knowledge of how my team operates and our
efficiency as a critical department on this ship. If you like I will have my
Chief Medic send you the reports on our last mass casualty drill and the
efficiency my department operated with during the last battle.”
"I will get to it soon enough. When I need to know, I will ask."
“Very
good Commander, I’ll see you in the morning.” Corbett said very
pleased with himself as she turned to walk away. “Now as to you Thor, I’ll
see you to your shuttle.”
"Ok." He answered and hoisted his bag up onto his shoulder.
Timo
climbed down to the shuttle followed by the doctor. Both men were silent for a
moment knowing that this was most likely Timo’s last time here on the
ship.
“I
assume that you’ll be moving Zoey back to Finland upon your return?”
Corbett quietly asked then added quickly before the Finn could respond. “I
will send you a list of a few doctors I’ve met at conferences who
practice there. They are excellent physicians and one has a reputation as a top
rehab specialist.”
"Probably Tohtori Tiilikainen. Rovaniemi is a small place. Everybody kinda knows everybody dere, you know? But tanks for tinking of us anyway, Doc."
“It’s
the least I can do.” Corbett said waving away the Finn’s thanks. “Before
you go I think it only fitting I send you off the same way we met.”
Reaching
into the bag still slung over his shoulder Corbett pulled out a bottle of
Tequila and began opening the cap. “It seems like a century ago since we
had a drink at that bar on Forest. May the stars always shine upon you Timo
Vanhanen.” He said taking a pull from the bottle and then handing it over
to Timo.
The engineer, now former engineer, looked down at the bottle. They certainly had come a long way in a short time. As sad as he was about leaving Meridian, though, he was in a much better place than he was at their first meeting. This time he was leaving to take his wife someplace where they would finally be safe.
A slight smirk crossed the Finn's face before he took a pull on
the bottle. It was quality stuff. Real quality. He passed it back with a typical Timo nod. "Yaw. You be careful vid dat stuff. And take care of de crew. I'll be vatching de news updates back home."
~~ Shuttlepod One ~~
Timo's eyes were glued to the old girl as the shuttle dropped from the launch bay and slipped into its debarkation pattern. There were so many emotions swirling around inside of him. He was going back and forth, certain that he had made the correct decision but doubting it still.
"Feeling ok, Commander?" Petty Officer Douglasdale asked from her spot in the pilot's seat.
"Yaw."
"It will be different not seeing you around, but I'll bet Zoe will be happy to have you back."
"Yaw."
"Well, just sit back and relax. I'll have you back home to her in no time."
Back home. Put that way, it didn't sound half so bad after all.

It felt good to once again be sitting in the Captain's chair. Rog thought that it had been ages since he'd been in this seat. What with the upgrades and then rescuing Ian, it had indeed been a while. Now he was back where he belonged. He looked around and realized the Bridge hadn't changed all that much. From what Lt.Cmdr Kretchnikov had shown him, the weapons and hull polarization had been improved somewhat. How those improvements worked, remained to be seen.
Now it was time for them to leave the space dock at last. They were to go on a standard patrol and await further orders. It was his understanding that those orders were to arrive in the next couple of days. Rog said, "Mr. Shepard, ask the dock master for permission to get under way. Once that is given, proceed at one quarter impulse till we are at a safe distance. Then at three quarters impulse to the nearest asteroid belt."
Turning to the tactical station, Rog was almost surprised to see an attractive blond woman standing there and not Ian. It still made him sad to think of his once strong friend sitting in a wheelchair, weak as a kitten. He said, "Ms. Kretchnikov, we should arrive at the nearest asteroid belt in about a day or so. I would like for you to have our weapons calibrated by then. Once there, we'll have some target practice to see how our new toys are working."
Rog was disappointed that he had neither a new Comms or Science officer for the upcoming mission. Still the enlisted personnel that he'd put in charge of those departments, were more than adequate. He addressed them at this moment, "Ms. Hendriksen, Mr. Baxter, you will alert me to any changes in our surroundings and or any incoming information from Starfleet. Is that clear?"
After receiving acknowledgement of those orders, he tapped the comm button. "Ms. Wang, keep me apprised of our engine status." Switching channels he continued, "Bones, I trust you enjoyed your shore leave. What is Sickbay's status?" As he awaited his CEO's and his CMO's responses, Rog looked out at the stars. How he longed to be out there once more.

Illanya strode onto the bridge as she noticed another new face come out of the Captain's ready room. A courteous nod as they passed. And a moment later she stood in front of the door. She took no hesitation in tapping the door chime.
Rog looked up and said, "Enter."
"LtCmdr Kretchnikov Sir. I vould like to speak to you if you have a moment.", she replied.
Rog replied, "Yes, of course. Come in commander."
Illanya stepped in as the door glided open. "I vanted to give you a status on ships defences Captain. All upgrades have gone as planned with some modifications of my own.", she said standing at attention.
Rog stood and said, "At ease commander." He extended his hand and said, "It's good to have you aboard commander. I trust the Meridian's Armory personnel are meeting your expectations."
Illanya stood at ease.
"I have yet to make that determination Sir. So far I have been satisfied. Permission to speak candidly Sir?", she asked.
Rog lowered is hand and replied, "Of course commander."
"I am avare that you took three of my men on some sort of mission. They have not divulged the nature of this mission. Vould you care to Captain?", she said in a matter-of-fact tone. No sign of anger or accusation in her words.
Rog thought a moment. Kretchnikov had every right as the CAO to ask such a question. As one of his staff officers, Rog felt it necessary to take her into his confidence. He said, "Yes commander I would. Your predecessor, Cmdr. Ian Fraiser was in trouble and needed my help. In order to help him, I felt it necessary to take my former XO, my CMO and three of the Armory personnel, in order to effect this help."
Illanya nodded, "I see. I vould request in future you inform me vhen you require armory personnel Captain. I understand you are in command here but I must know vere my people are at all times to maintain effective defense of this vessel. As it vas I vas missing 3 people without a vord. I find that unacceptable Sir."

Rog replied, "When we left on this mission commander, you were not aboard. In the future, you will be fully informed naturally. Oh and you're right about something else, I am in command of this vessel. Don't forget it." He wasn't about to let this Russian walk all over him.
"Of course Sir. That is never in doubt.", she nodded. She wasn't worried about this Captain any more. The line had been drawn and she wouldn't cross it again. "I thought you vould vant to see the new veapons specs.", she added as she handed him a PADD.
With a nod, Rog took the PADD and began to read the specs. He said, "Hmm, only slight improvements. What is your assessment commander?"
"This vessel vas state-of-the art ven it was originally built Sir. It's veapons pack a bigger punch and our improved veapons stores vill allow us to stay in the fight longer. It's all about outlasting the enemy Sir. Ve are capable of giving the Romulans a very bloody nose Sir."
Rog said, "Well that's something I suppose. As you know we were in a very tough fight at Jupiter's Ghost. So any improvement is welcome. What about our polarization capabilities?
"The armor has been improved to an additional 50% higher dispersal rate than the previous armor. Ve'll be able to take a few more direct hits vithout falling apart. All in all this ship is as ready for the fight as we can make her."
Rog smiled and said, "That's good to hear isn't commander? Is there anything else you'd like to discuss?"
"Nyet, Captain. That vas all. If you'll excuse me I vould like to go to my station now and run a diagnostic on the new targeting system.", she replied.
Rog stood and said, "Of course commander. It's good to have you aboard the Meridian." He extended his hand.
"Da Captain.", she replied taking his hand and shaking it. Without any more ado she spun on her heel and walked out.
