Description

A tremendous amount of evidence exists, supporting the position that the three large subdivisions, to be located north of the Golf Academy on the Wilmot Line (border of Waterloo and Wilmot Township), go against the public interest. Furthermore these subdivisions, as approved by Waterloo Council on July 17, 2006, will have negative affects on a vital public good, our groundwater.

Waterlooians.ca spokesperson, David Wellhauser, has and will continue to present information on this important matter to the City of Waterloo, the Region of Waterloo, and where appropriate the Province of Ontario.

Waterlooians.ca is currently running an awareness campaign to educate the public of the associated and long term problems with these developments. Media reports and notices of media appearances are posted at:

http://www.waterlooians.ca

Residents of the Region of Waterloo and Grand River Watershed have and continue to be in contact with multiple provincial government ministries (Premier's Office, MOE, Infrastructure and Renewal, Municipal Affairs and Housing, and Natural Resources).

The developments, as approved by Waterloo City Council in staff report DS-06-16, threaten long term public health and well being of residents in Waterloo Region and the communities south on the Grand River.

Issues:
- Importance of groundwater protection – quantity, quality, flow issues
- Air pollution concerns
- Limited terms of reference for scoped environmental assessments
- Climate change
- Development bias for short term economic development VS long term community health
- DS-06-16 policy incongruence with the a 1992 Ontario Municipal Board ruling, the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement March 2005, Regional Policy, and the City of Waterloo's Environment First Policy.

Furthermore, the Owens and McNally lands in Waterloo need to be protected for similar reasons. An appeal is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board on this matter.
