It is rare that we ask for help for any other dog than a Greyhound, but.......

You may remember an e-mail a couple of weeks ago about a 12 year old Grey girl who was being surrendered back to GPA.

We are happy to report that the little girl quickly found her forever home with one of our adopters, and she is enjoying life.

She had a senior, Lab-mix "brother", named Guiness, who is also in need of a home.  The circumstances of the adopter have become unmanageable with financial and  sickness issues approaching disasters.

Guiness is docile, gentle, and sweet...He had knee surgery some time ago and has a very noticeable limp, and is currently on pain medication, which is helping him.

If anyone can help this sweet old soul, or if you know of someone who can properly care for him, please reply to : Pharaohduc@...

This adoption is not through GPA in any way.  It will be handled directly with the present owner, and there is no adoption fee.

Please feel free to forward this info to anyone who may be able to help Guiness.

Thank you.

Joan

For anyone who is interested, is in the vicinity this Sunday in Lady Lake, and who does not already know about it....the Villages Greyhound Club is hosting an Extreme Greyhound Bowling event from noon to 3 p.m.  There will be a BAKE SALE and CHINESE AUCTION as well as bowling.  It might be too late for bowling tickets but some may still be available at the door for $20 for 3 games including shoes.  At least try and check out the bake sale and Chinese auction!  This is being held at the Fiesta Bowl in Lady Lake US 27/441 behind Chick-Fil-A.

                 MEDICATION RECALL (HIGH         PRIORITY)

by         Bill Minson on Wednesday, February 23,         2011 at 8:20am

Subject: Fwd: Medication         recall (Very Important)
Hi         Everyone,
I         am passing this email forwarded to me this morning. It's
about a         medication that is familiar to many of us. Note also
the FDA’s comments         at the end of the message.   I received this
information from         a friend whose mother recently passed away.
Apparently, this was caused         by a medication that is deadly.
Here are the details and I suggest you         pass it on to your loved
ones and others.
Subject: Phenylpropanolamine         (PPA)
I         would like to thank those of you who expressed condolences on
the recent         passing of my mother. She suffered a hemorrhagic
stroke while she was         driving home from my house at 7:30 and
passed away at 8:30. My mother's         stroke and passing was an
enormous shock to my family because she did         not have any
symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before         she
had gone to her doctor for a check up and received a clean bill of
health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me
and         had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her
passing, we have         learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many
cold medicines that         contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which
can cause hemorrhagic stokes or         cerebral bleeding even with the
first use. I am forwarding a list of         other medications that
currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly         being
recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than
two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger
for         years, we unfortunately, did not. I urge you to review the
list of         medicines with PPA and avoid these medications. All
drugs containing         PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may
want to try calling the 800         number listed on most drug boxes
and inquire about a REFUND. Please         read this CAREFULLY. Also,
please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything
containing         this ingredient. It has been linked         to
increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages
18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication.
Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone
(even children) seek alternative         medicine.

The following medications         contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite         Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary         Supplements
Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite         Control
Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine         Effervescent

Triaminic DM Cough Relief
Triaminic Expectorant Chest &         Head
Triaminic Syrup ! ! Cold &         Allergy
Triaminic Triaminicol Cold &         Cough

I         just found out and called the 800# on the container for
Triaminic         and
they informed me that they are voluntarily         recalling the
following medicines
because of a certain ingredient that is causing         strokes and
seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry         (Pink)
3D         Cold & Cough Berry
3D         Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708         with the lot
number on
the         box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to
them,         and
they will also issue you a refund. If you know         of anyone else
with small children,

PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS         SERIOUS STUFF!
DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR         MAILING LIST so people are
informed. They can then pass it along to         their families.
To confirm these findings         please take time to check the
following:

                 MEDICATION RECALL (HIGH         PRIORITY)

by         Bill Minson on Wednesday, February 23,         2011 at 8:20am

Subject: Fwd: Medication         recall (Very Important)
Hi         Everyone,
I         am passing this email forwarded to me this morning. It's
about a         medication that is familiar to many of us. Note also
the FDA’s comments         at the end of the message.   I received this
information from         a friend whose mother recently passed away.
Apparently, this was caused         by a medication that is deadly.
Here are the details and I suggest you         pass it on to your loved
ones and others.
Subject: Phenylpropanolamine         (PPA)
I         would like to thank those of you who expressed condolences on
the recent         passing of my mother. She suffered a hemorrhagic
stroke while she was         driving home from my house at 7:30 and
passed away at 8:30. My mother's         stroke and passing was an
enormous shock to my family because she did         not have any
symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before         she
had gone to her doctor for a check up and received a clean bill of
health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me
and         had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her
passing, we have         learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many
cold medicines that         contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which
can cause hemorrhagic stokes or         cerebral bleeding even with the
first use. I am forwarding a list of         other medications that
currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly         being
recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than
two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger
for         years, we unfortunately, did not. I urge you to review the
list of         medicines with PPA and avoid these medications. All
drugs containing         PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may
want to try calling the 800         number listed on most drug boxes
and inquire about a REFUND. Please         read this CAREFULLY. Also,
please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything
containing         this ingredient. It has been linked         to
increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages
18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication.
Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone
(even children) seek alternative         medicine.

The following medications         contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite         Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary         Supplements
Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite         Control
Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine         Effervescent

Triaminic DM Cough Relief
Triaminic Expectorant Chest &         Head
Triaminic Syrup ! ! Cold &         Allergy
Triaminic Triaminicol Cold &         Cough

I         just found out and called the 800# on the container for
Triaminic         and
they informed me that they are voluntarily         recalling the
following medicines
because of a certain ingredient that is causing         strokes and
seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry         (Pink)
3D         Cold & Cough Berry
3D         Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708         with the lot
number on
the         box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to
them,         and
they will also issue you a refund. If you know         of anyone else
with small children,

PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS         SERIOUS STUFF!
DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR         MAILING LIST so people are
informed. They can then pass it along to         their families.
To confirm these findings         please take time to check the
following:

We are asking that everyone email Senator Sachs at sachs.maria.web@...

this bill is being introduced by Senator Sachs. Please read and write her at this email address.....as far as I can understand they  are ending racing but I see no provisions to protect the greyhounds involved in track racing, breeding farms and kennels dedicated to racing.

Please ask that the bill include a plan for the greyhounds and race horses involved and at risk of euthanization, being sold off to foreign countries and experimental labrotories and a few other horrors our greys have been subjected to when not wanted any longer, The rescue groups have not worked this long and hard to see the last generation of racing greyhounds face anything but safe forever homes and that will take a massive effort by all rescue groups. We need time and financial provisions to see the greys thru this.

We can included pictures and our stories of how our greys have affected our lives anything to bring to the Senator the information that these greyhounds are NOT just commodities and that their welfare should be considered in any bill that involves racing or the end of it.

This is my personal plea
Thank you

The correct vote is NO it will STOP the immediate closing of greyhound racing.  Otherwise the sport could go underground or to other countries.  It would be impossible to move that many dogs to other tracks or place a great burden on rescue groups to try and find homes for all these dogs.

This is important! This survey will probably have the most influence on public opinion and legislators votes (besides campaign/ bribe monies-- which is one of the biggest reasons this bill was introduced in the first place). There is no residency requirements or personal info asked of participants. As of my vote, 66% were with us against eliminating the requirement to run dogs to receive gaming benefits.

Hi Marty:

..I voted "NO" and survey said 66% were voting no at that time. I also sent my reps in Florida government a long letter about the situation stating that if they are going to allow the changes that there is no way to absorb all the greyhounds who would instantly become without support meaning they would be killed.

Florida de-coupling legislation update

Posted by: "fieldchmn" FieldChmn@...   fieldchmn

Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:23 pm (PDT)

Here is an update from Dennis Tyler, president of GPA-Central Florida, on the current status of the Florida de-coupling legislation. My postscript follows Dennis' report:

"On March 22, Florida House Bill 1145 went through the first of three committee hearings and was approved by a vote of 14 to 1 to go on to the Finance and Tax and Economic Affairs Committees for a vote. This Bill has the same language as Senate Bill 1594 that was approved by a Senate committee in a 7 to 5 vote the previous week. The Senate bill will go through other Senate committees, then will to go to the Senate floor for a final vote if approved by all committees.

These bills both have the same language allowing Florida race tracks with poker rooms and casino gaming the option of discontinuing live Greyhound racing at their facilities.

Committee hearings in both the House and Senate shows that there is a push to get these bills to the floor for a vote.

NOTHING has been voted on yet, and there is no final vote scheduled yet, for either House or Senate bills.

Approval of these bills will change the numbers of "adoption Greyhounds" significantly by way of Florida race tracks opting out of live racing. Both bills carry an effective date of 6/30/11.

There are well over 8,800 greyhounds presently racing in Florida at 11 of the 13 tracks in operation here. (Two tracks are seasonal tracks currently). There are over 3,000 Greyhounds on Florida farms and at least another 500 Greyhounds in adoption kennels, foster homes etc. throughout the state.

If and when approved by all the above House and Senate committees, these bills could be voted on by the House and Senate any time between now and the close of the 2011 legislative session slated for May 6th.

Dennis Tyler"

And my postscript: It needs to be emphasized that the situation is very fluid at present, and one committee's vote by itself is not determinative of the outcome. Committee votes are not necessarily reflective of the way the entire House and Senate will vote, and both chambers must pass their respective bills for the de-coupling to become law. While the momentum at present may be in favor of passage of the de-coupling legislation, much can happen between now and the end of the session.
The SEGA Advisory Board continues to discuss contingency plans, but at present there are too many unknowns to craft a plan based on a reasonably likely scenario. One possible -- and it is only that -- scenario is that we may be called on to take a lot of Greyhounds in a short period of time, in which case we will be calling on our members and volunteers to kennel (not foster)Greyhounds in numbers appropriate to each individual's situation and capability, so that the Greyhounds can be housed safely until they can be moved to other adoption groups or placed locally through our normal adoption processes. This is only one of several different possible scenarios.
We will continue to provide updates as signficant developments occur, but we do not plan to report on every committee vote. Between updates, it is safe to assume that the bills are working their way through the normal legislative process. We would like to remind everyone that every piece of information you get from various sources may or may not be 100% accurate. Consider the source, and verify it through other sources, as not everything reported on the Internet is 100% accurate. If you get e-mails making dire predictions about the fate of Greyhounds in Florida, please do not pass them on unless you know them to be 100% accurate, and ask your friends and acquaintences not to pass them on. Inaccurate information that causes panic or a flood of "pity applications" from well-meaning but unqualified prospective adopters can be a time-consuming distraction that diverts time and attention of adoption groups away from the primary mission of making sure that any Greyhound which loses its job as a result of the cessation of live racing has a place to live safely and well until it is rehomed.

Please join in saying prayers, and lighting an eternal candle for Missing Pilot Joseph Radford. Please choose a... large white pillar candle, and find a safe place where it can remain lite until the glow of the flames light his way safely home to his Family & friends... (Don't pay attention to time & date, there is no set time or date for this event, pray for him anywhere and anytime,) Pilot Joseph Radford's story... Missing Pilot Joseph Radford was last heard from on March 11 when he had taken off from the Glendale Municipal Airport at 6:30 a.m. then flew to the Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan, where he stopped to refuel, he took off again at around 8:30 a.m. Mr. Radford has a great love for Animals and he signed up for Pilots N Paws after reading an article about the program online. He became a Volunteer Pilot who transports Dogs from Animal Shelters and Rescue Groups and brings them to their new homes. If not for this program and the selfless Volunteers such as Mr. Radford who transports them all over the Country, these Dogs would most likely have been euthanized otherwise. Mr. Radford was last spotted and possibly heard by several hikers as he flew over the Canyon, and his radar contact was last picked up at 8:34 am, only a few minutes after he took off. The week-old search continues at Grand Canyon National Park for Mr. Radford and his candy apple red, Van RV-6 homebuilt aircraft, which his Friends say was his pride and joy, that he spent 13 years building. Park officials say that a fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter have been flown extensively over the areas where Radford was suspected to have flown. But so far they found no evidence of a crash or the emergency beacon first detected Sunday, March 13, by a private pilot. The search continues for any sign of Mr Radford and his Plane. Friends

Tomorrow, the House Economic Affairs Committee will vote on our Greyhound Decoupling Bill (House Bill 1145).

PLEASE CALL EACH OF THE LAWMAKERS LISTED BELOW RIGHT AWAY, AND POLITELY ASK THEM TO SUPPORT HOUSE BILL 1145.

If you have an adopted greyhound, mention that in your call.  In a desperate attempt to defeat this humane bill, greyhound breeders are using scare tactics and telling lawmakers that HB 1145 will somehow harm greyhounds.

TELL LAWMAKERS THAT THIS IS A GOOD BILL THAT WILL REDUCE GREYHOUND INJURIES AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF GREYHOUNDS THAT ENDURE LIVES OF CONFINEMENT.

ALSO, TELL THEM THAT THEY SHOULD NOT LISTEN TO THE SCARE TACTICS BEING USED BY GREYHOUND BREEDERS.

Then, forward this message to everyone you know.  The greyhounds can't speak for themselves, and are counting on us to be their voice!

Sincerely,

Carey Theil

Greetings, Friends,

Our March Ebay sale of some donated Limoges trinket boxes went SO well, it paid for our entire trip up to PA with 12 dogs. Thank you, thank you!

We're planning 2 transports in May, taking Florida greyhounds to groups in PA/NY and IN/KY, so we thought we would try again with some more trinket boxes in a Mother's Day theme. They would make very lavish and thoughtful gifts for ANY of your "Moms"! We're starting the bidding at a ridiculous price of just $9.99.

You can have a look at our Ebay store at the link below:

http://shop.ebay.com/godsgreyts/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

You might have to copy and paste the string into your own browser, if the link doesn't work.

If there is anyone you would care to forward this email to, we'd be greytful!

As always, many thanks for looking and for your generous support!!!

Pfizer pulls flea/tick preventive for severe side effect
By Christie Keith
April 20, 2011

Veterinary Practice News reported tonight that Pfizer is pulling its flea
and
tick preventive, ProMeris for Dogs, from production after it was linked to
cases
of a serious canine skin infection known as Pemphigus foliaceus (PF).
The findings arose out of a study published in the March issue of Veterinary
Dermatology. The study's lead author, Thierry Olivry, DrVet, PhD, Dipl.
ACVD,
along with resident Ursula Oberkirchner and pathologist Keith Linder, DVM,
PhD,
all of North Carolina State University, reported on a Labrador retriever
diagnosed with ProMeris-caused PF. From the article in Veterinary Practice
News:
"Dogs (in the study) developed lesions in a draping pattern or along the
dorsal
side after having ProMeris Duo applied," Olivry says. "Some dogs showed
systemic
signs that included lethargy, generalized pain and anorexia. In the case of
a
7-year-old (spayed) female Labrador, a two-week history of skin lesions and
lameness was presented.

>"Ten months prior to referral, the dog's monthly flea and tick prevention

Subj: How to Read Bar Codes

HOW TO READ BAR CODES...(very good to know)

I am going to watch those bar codes a LOT more now...
I am busy reading the ingredients..Boy..
shopping is a full time job!!!
ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--
NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR
PACKAGE SAYS,
TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!

With all the food and pet products now coming from China ,
it is best to make sure you read label
at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying
food products.

Many products no longer show where they were made,
only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.
How to read Bar Codes .... interesting!
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping,
if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA  &  CANADA " AND NOT FROM  CHINA!!

The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in  Taiwan or  China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690691 or 692,
the product is MADE IN  CHINA.
471 is Made in  Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related
departments never educate the public, therefore we have to
RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not
prefer products "MADE IN  CHINA ", so they don't show from which
country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first
3 digits are:

690-692 ... then it is MADE IN  CHINA
00 - 09
...   USA   &  CANADA
30 - 37
...   FRANCE
40 - 44 ...   GERMANY
471  ...  Taiwan
49
... JAPAN
50 ...   UK

BUY US& CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning
of the number.
We need every boost we can get!

From: k3ess@...: 4/26/2011 8:41:41 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time
Subj: Thousands of Greyhounds in Florida about to die.....

Florida Senate Bill SB 1594 has passed. The bill allows race track owners to drop dog racing at their tracks immediately. HOWEVER, THE BILL CONTAINS NO SAFETY NET FOR THE DOGS. So, what is going to happen is that thousands of racers are going to die because their breeders/owners will no longer have income to carry them. There are thousands of dogs involved and perhaps tens of thousands when you add the racers to the farm dogs. No adoption organizations can possibly handle the tsunami.

YOU NEED TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION:

CALL YOU LEGISLATORS IN THE FLORIDA CONGRESS TODAY. DO NOT BOTHER WITH ANY EMAILS AS THESE WILL NOT HELP. You can find their names and telephone numbers by going to: myfloridahouse.gov
Click on find your representative.
Tell them that SB 1594 provides no safety net for the thousands of racing greyhounds that are at tracks and on farms and that they are at risk because they have been cut off financially by the bill. Tell them that a plan needs to be formulated to help the marooned greyhounds and that it should be as an amendment to the bill. In any event the race track and gambling interests should be the ones to pay for the maintenance of the dogs until they can be rehomed as they are the ones who will gain and who have the means.

KINDLY MAKE THIS CALL TODAY...THERE IS NO TIME TO LOSE AS THE DOGS ARE CLEARLY IN JEOPARDY. THE BILL IS A WOLF IN SHEEPS CLOTHING, BUT THATS ANOTHER STORY. NOW YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION AS ONLY YOUR PROMPT ACTION WILL HELP. THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. WE NEED A DELUGE OF CALLS.

Thanks,

John Willier

Thanks all for calling your legislators. Keep it up as only group pressure will save the day for the dogs.

The latest is that 7 tracks want to close immediately if the bill goes through. That would indicate for over 10,000 dogs coming all at once. The group that is tasked with handling these dogs is the Humane Society. We know that won't work as no group or combination of groups can handle that many so a better plan needs to be hatched. Marilyn Varnberg of GAF is working this from the Florida Congress side and Beverly Sebastian is working this from the adoption side. One possibility is a plan that Beverly hatched. She might be able to get 10,000 dogs into one of her programs. She didn't say which program, but she does the cell dogs. She styled this up as a grant if someone can come up with $3,000,000. K

Hello
All greyhound groups have been invited to participate in the Tavares "Art Around Town" May 6(next Friday evening)
5:30pm to 8:00pm. We are invited to walk our adoptables, adopted and fosters around town so they can "strut" their stuff and let the public know they are wonderful pets!! There will be a Meet&Greet booth next to the GreenK9 for shade and water and also original artwork for sale to benefit GPA Senior Sanctuary of Florida.
Please try to bring your greys as we need to let people know how to contact greyhound adoption groups especially at this crucial time.
