Subject: Tibetan New Year in Gansu and More Exciting trips coming up!

Hello Everyone,

The count down to Christmas and New Year is going fast! I wish those of you who are going home for the Christmas holidays a great time spent with your loved ones. For those who are not going home, I am sure that you have great plans made up already. Here, let me introduce an exciting new trip happening in February – travel to Gansu for the Tibetan New Year Celebrations!

I know that many of you may be dreaming of visiting Tibet while you are in China. But did you know that you could get a Tibetan experience every bit as authentic as within Tibet in quite a few other places in China? Among them is Gannan prefecture in Gansu Province. Gansu province is along the famous Chinese Silk Road that stretches from Xi’an into Xinjiang. Gannan prefecture is located southwest of Gansu province, north of the Sichuan border. It is a place where you can have an intimate encounter with the Tibetan culture without the intrusion of mass tour groups. Much of this part of the province is unexplored, and is pristine in its original form.

It is definitely a trip that is going to leave you with lasting impressions, and worth taking time off from work for!

Please email me directly if you have further questions regarding these trips.

Enjoy the holiday season!

Jenny

Hello Everyone,

After having been absent for a quite some time, and I am finally back to organize more trips for the up-coming months. Hope you¡¯ve all been enjoying yourselves while the weather was still warm and pleasant. During my time away, I received news from some of you about repatriating back to your home countries. It is always sad to see people leave, but I am really thankful for the great memories traveling and getting to know all of you.

I know that I owe everyone a big apology for not keeping you up to date on what¡¯s happening with myself for the past two months or so, and also for not having any trips for this period of time. A family emergency popped up unexpectedly shortly after the October holidays, and I¡¯ve had to travel to Guangdong (my hometown) for 2 weeks. Then a few days after that, I¡¯ve had to take off for another 3 weeks to the Mediterranean for a family vacation which had been planned back in July. For the latter part, I am not complaining at all. It was a wonderful time spent exploring Turkey, Israel, Greece and Egypt. I enjoyed Turkey and Greece the most, perhaps it was because I had more time in these places and were able to explore on my own pace. For those of you who¡¯s traveled with me to Xinjiang, I have to say that I am happy to be able to visit Turkey in person finally, and I was able to see the cultural similarities with the Uygur people in Xinjiang with the Turkish. The rest of the trip I was on organized tours, which were all very rushed. I got to see a lot in a short amount of time, but was not really able to take in too much information, but took a lot of photos instead. Then, I was shocked and devastated to find that not only Facebook, but even Picasa web had been blocked in China!!!

So you can see, there was just not a lot of time in between the times away to really get down to do any planning in terms of trips. Now I can¡¯t believe that we are already heading into the Christmas holidays! December is really the time to reflect on all the things that¡¯s happened to us in the past year, and start making new plans for the next. I sincerely hope that 2009 had been a year filled with joy, happiness, and many other blessings to all of you. I know that it had been true for myself personally, and I am really thankful for the many things that¡¯s happened. Especially for this opportunity to do what I enjoy in a place as exciting as China, and I hope to continue to share my discoveries of this country with all of you in the years to come.

If you¡¯ve had some interesting travels in China recently and would like to share with me, please feel free to write. So let¡¯s start with what¡¯s on the schedule for weekend trips in the months to come.

Hope to see you on a trip soon!

Jenny Zhou

1.    Harbin Winter Escapade Packages

For those of you who can brave the cold, Harbin is a must-go destination during your time in China. Every year from December to March, the city of Harbin becomes a winter fairyland with ice and snow sculptures of all sizes and designs that are beyond one¡¯s imagination. Not only you will get to admire the artistically crafted sculptures made of ice and snow, you will also get to experience the unique culture of the northeast, where many locals engage in polar bear swim and eat popsicles as they stroll at -10©bC temperature. Within hours drive from the city, you will reach Yabuli - China¡¯s most prestigious slopes where the nation¡¯s top athletes conduct their training - A short getaway to Harbin will yield memories that last a lifetime!

Harbin 2 Days 1 night from RMB 1988/person

Harbin & Yabuli Ski 3 Days 2 nights from RMB 3398/person

Harbin & Yabuli Ski 4 Days 3 nights from RMB 5088/person

*There are no set departures for this trip, all trips depart upon request.

2.    New Biking Trips

Starting this month, I am adding cycling trips into the list of usual programs which should be an interest to many of you! After having been to many places in Eastern China, I think that cycling could be another excellent alternative for exploration. Since I have not done any cycling trips in the past, I am just going to start with some moderate level trips so that anyone can feel comfortable enough to join. Of course, knowing how to ride a bike is essential. All trips will have a support vehicle, so everyone can just ride at a pace that they are comfortable with. The prices for the trips already includes bike rental and helmet, and if anyone have their own mountain bikes, I shall deduct the rental cost from the price indicated. So come out for a new challenge!

Dong Shan (Suzhou) Biking

Date: 2009/12/12 (Saturday) & 2010/01/10 (Sunday)

Departure time: 8am

Return time:¡¡+/- 6pm

Cost: RMB 500/person (bike and helmet included)

3.    Hiking Trips

Hiking is still my first love, and a love that I would never give up on, so for those who feel the same way, don¡¯t worry, there will still be plenty of that in the months to come. A new addition to our hike program is the community service hike to Hangzhou, with a message to keep the city litter- free. We will be hiking up to the Baoshu Pagoda overlooking the West Lake, and picking up garbage as we go! Our other all-time favorite Hangzhou hikes will still be on-going.

Hangzhou Community Service Hike: Baoshu Pagoda to the West Lake

Date: 2009/12/20 (Sunday)

Departure time: 07:30 am

Return Time: +/- 6:00 pm

4.    Hot Springs Trip

Our trip out to Wuyi Hot Springs last year had been very well received. This year we¡¯ll return to Wuyi but to a different Hot Springs resort, the Clear Water Bay Resort. I had been told that it has better and more modern facilities than that of Tang Feng, where we went last year, but the only down side is that it has not got the Japanese style tatami rooms which I found very cozy. The program remains the same. The trip will consist of some hiking, and exploration of traditional ancient villages in beautiful natural surroundings. I love Wuyi for its uncontaminated environment and abundance of hot springs which makes a great winter getaway.

Wuyi Hot Spring Weekend

Date: 2009/12/26 ¨C 2009/12/27 & 2010/01/16 ¨C 2010/01/17

Return time: +/- 7:00pm

Pls. note that if you have a group, and would like to do any of these tours as your own private tour, please contact me separately.

Hi Jenny,
attached is a draft of the sichuan trip i am planning. Sorry i am so late
with it.
I was going to tack this onto your yunnan trip but Merry does not want to
do that trip with you. Too cold for her she says.
This trip attached will be cold in the mountains also I think but not so
cold as where you are going.
I am thinking of still coming to yunnan on my own but I broke my small toe
last week and it is very swelled up right now and not good to walk on. It
probably takes 4 or 5 weeks to get back to normal. I will see what it is
like next week.
For the trip there are two options, one going from chengdu to lanzhou and
one starting at langzhou. The one starting at chendu looks better for
timing but the second option is if i go to yunnan with you.
I would want transport between chendu and songpan and maybe they take me to
jiuzhaiguo or we take local transport between songpan and jiuzhaiguo, then
we get some transport to pick us up from jiuzhaiguo to take us to lanzhou.

Without the airfares between shanghai and kunming how much would your
yunnan trip cost if i were to go on my own?

Beyond Shangri-la — 8 Days Yunnan Meili Snow Mountain Golden Week Adventure Trek

cid:image003.jpg@01CA2644.0644BC40

Hello Everyone,

Just a reminder that if you are still trying to decide what to do for the October Golden Week, here is an opportunity for a real outdoor adventure to a rarely visited area in SW China. As of now, there are still some discounted flight tickets available, so early booking is recommended. I had been told by some people lately that they will need to start work on the 08th of October. If that’s the case, you have the option of reducing your trip by one day, skipping the final day in Shangri-la, which will get you back to Shanghai on the 7th late afternoon or evening. Also for those of you with more time to spare, you can extend your trip to the Tiger Leaping Gorge or Lijiang as well. Pls. come and talk to me if you need help to tailor the program to suit your schedule. Cost will be adjusted accordingly.

If you have any further questions regarding this trip, pls. call: 021-5187-0545.

Sincerely,

Jenny Zhou

I. Trip Introduction

Meili Snow Mountain – Located at junction of three of Asia’s most important rivers, the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nu in NW Yunnan province is the sacred snow mountain of Meili. With its main peak (Kawa Karpo) surging up to 6749 meters, this mountain has never been successfully challenged by men due to its deceptive cliffs, and unpredictable temperaments. This reaffirms the Tibetans’ believe that it processes mysterious powers, and it is highly revered by them. Every year in September, Tibetan pilgrims from far and near come to pay their respects by circulating the base of the mountain, and get cleansed by the icy waters of the Sacred Waterfall. We will use the Yu Beng village, a small secluded Tibetan village at the base of the mountain as our base for our exploration of the Sacred Waterfall, an ice lake at the mountaineering base camp, and the Ming Yong Glaciers. The trail into to Yu Beng village is inaccessible by cars, and requires about 6-7 hours of hiking to reach. We will spend 5 days in the Meili Snow Mountain area, exploring on foot and/or horseback.

After a very strenuous but rewarding trek, we will head on to Shangri-la to spend two nights for rest and sight-seeing before we head back to Shanghai via Kunming. Or, those with more holidays available can chose to extend their holidays in other parts of Yunnan.

II. Trip Highlights:

Watching the golden sunset of Kawa karpo from your hotel room at Feilai Temple; part-taking in the annual pilgrimage of local Tibetans; untouched nature of the Meili Mountain reserve; Mingyong Glacier—one of the most well preserved glaciers in the world; colorful Tibetan culture in Shangri-la; majestic autumn foliage; 2 nights at a luxurious Tibetan boutique hotel in Shangri-la

III. Day-to-Day Itinerary

9/30:  Shanghai—Kunming

19:05-22:15 (CA4584) — Shanghai Hongqiao to Kunming; Hotel Check-in. No evening program.

Accommodation: Kunming Airport Hotel 3* (with breakfasts)

07:40-08:20 (MU5931) - Kunming— Shangri-la (flight); transfer to Feilai Temple (Meili) by car (+/- 5 hours) with scenic stops at Deqin county, and Dong Zu Lin Tibetan Monastery

Accommodation: Fei Lai Temple Hotel (twin rooms with en-suite baths)

10/02: Fei Lai Temple—Yu Beng Village (Meili)

If lucky, we’ll witness a majestic sunrise before breakfast. Drive to Xi Dang Hot Springs, the start of a 6-7 hour trek to Yu Beng Village. The highest pass you will encounter today will be at 3800 meters, and you will have an elevation gain of roughly 2000 meters.

Accommodation: Lower Yu Beng Village (dorm rooms with shared facilities)

10/03: Yu Beng village—Sacred Waterfalls (Meili)

Trek from Yu Beng village to the Sacred Waterfalls, a well traversed pilgrimage route taken by local Tibetans. It is a much more leveled trek (with little elevation gain) compared to the day before, and the return trek takes about 6 hours to complete.

Accommodation: Lower Yu Beng Village (dorm rooms with shared facilities)

10/04: Yu Beng village— Ice Lake (Kawa Karpo Mountaineering base camp)

You may have a rest today, but some of us will be trekking to the mountaineering base camp through old growth forests to reach an ice lake. It is where the intrepid would embark on their challenge to the Kawa Karpo. We will stay the night at the Upper Yu Beng Village.

Accommodation: Upper Yu Beng Village (dorm rooms with shared facilities)

10/05: Yu Beng Village—Mingyong Ice Glacier

Pack up in the morning, trek down to Xi Dang Hot Springs. The trek is mostly downhill, and will take much shorter time compared to when we hiked up. Our car will pick us up and transfer us to Mingyong Glaciers. We will take the stay at a guesthouse in the Mingyong village.

Accommodation: Ming Yong Village Guesthouse (twin rooms with en-suite baths)

10/06: Mingyong Ice Glacier—Shangri-la

Hike up to the Glacier in the morning (2 hours). The Mingyong Glacier is the largest of all the glaciers in the area, surface area can be as big as 73.5 KM2. It can stretch from 5000 meters to as far as 2600 meters, a rare sight in China, and the world. Return to the GH, and drive to Shangri-la, with rest stops in between. Arrive at Shangri-la in the evening, check into hotel. You should be glad to know that massage is available in town.

Accommodation: Gyahtang Dzong Hotel (with breakfasts)
