Over the past two months I have been preparing myself for the holiday season. So
far I have lost 9lbs by cutting out starch, some fruits and eating mostlyÂ
chicken breast with salad and fish. Lot os water. No pasta, anything with flour,
no bread, no potatoes, no rice. It works.

you can't go without eating fruits, even pasta and breads... it depends what
type.. Whole wheat is teh way to go... I've lost 45 pounds and it took me one
year. and you can do yourself a service by exercisting regularly as well. Once
I took fitness seriously teh pounds took off! I'm not aw a size 8-10 from a
size 16-18. And I've been like this maintaining for over a year.
the main rule is to ensure you ahve protein at each and every meal, this is what
keeps you full. Keep away from sodas, drink lots of water, eat a small meal
before a large gathering and you will also be less inclined to eat a lot.
To finally be able to wear a bikini at my age, 49 is something I never in my
wildest dreams imagined.. but I am doing it. Good luck everyone!

not concern myself with what others perceptions are of me. But it does have to
come from the individual in how they feel about themselves.

Australian habits. Here in Canada we're all struggling with balance... I don't

Eating the Australian Way
Australians are often divided into the haves, and the have-nots.
But they're not always talking about money.
These days, it's often the haves (too much body fat), versus the have-nots (not
overweight).
We can't seem to make up our minds whether to eat at McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut,
Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and All-You-Can-Eat fast food restaurants, or whether
to grab a protein snack, a freshly-squeezed fruit juice with wheatgrass and go
straight to the gym.
Women's magazines have the same problem. A sample magazine from this month
featured diet and exercise routines from three TV personalities and movie stars.
Yet the back section of the magazine featured recipes such as luscious mocha
fudge cake.
The incidence of obesity in Australia rose dramatically in the 90s - 80% for
women. And over 20% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. Our
eating habits are often unbalanced.
Yet a trip to the local beach shows a large number of exceedingly fit bodies,
often accompanied by personal trainers. Perhaps the rebellion has begun.
Australian authors are now responsible for several internationally-known health
and fitness books, such as the Sandra Cabot's Liver Cleansing Diet, the CSIRO
WellBeing Diet, and Jennie Brand-Miller's New Glucose Revolution.
So let's assume you've decided to improve your health and fitness, upped your
intake of raw fruit and vegies (for Liver Cleansing), are monitoring your intake
of white breads and potatoes (for Glucose Revolution), and planning a BBQ based
around lean meat for dinner tonight (CSIRO diet).
A November 2005 announcement from Jennie Brand-Miller is good news for the
traditional Ocker image of throwing a shrimp on the barbie, while drinking a
cold beer.
Apparently moderate alcohol intake has been related to a reduced risk of type 2
diabetes and coronary heart disease. The new study looked at the impact of beer,
white wine and gin on a carbohydrate-based meal. The result was that the
alcoholic drinks, in particular the white wine, helped to lower the glucose and
insulin response after the meal.
So if someone criticises you for that pre-dinner drink this summer, just say
that you're making an effort to avoid diabetes. They may just buy you another
drink for being so thoughtful.

Well, I am a newbie!
I'm in Alberta, Canada... have a 2 year old daughter. I am not, nor have I ever
been, overweight (but I am on my way, unfortunetly)... I KNOW what I need to do
and eat... done it before in the past and lost weight in a healthy way... guess
it's just harder to find time with a 2 year old. And maybe my body is just a
bit different after having a child. Also a single mom. Biggest issure, by far
tho, is that I have very little self control in what and how much... and
often... I eat. I hate it. I'm an emotional eater.... and I'm SO thankful that
I'm NOT overweight (yet)... so I danno, I joined for advice/tips/ideas... and
maybe a "pick me up" type thing too, lol. I'm pretty bummed some days!!

Hi,
I lose 60 lbs by walking my dogs i always wanted to mention i cut the crap foods
anything that would make me put on the weight. and walking the dogs DID work, I
also use the wii fit any amount of exercize i GOOD exercize!
Hi everyone I have a BMI of just over 30 and my birthday is tomorrow and I will
be 42. Between not working and a lot of stress and looking for work and
personal issues and medication, taking some evening courses to or involved in
church and volunteer things, I've tried to stay on track with not gaining too
much weight, but I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I haven't been at the point
very long where I could handle or get many interviews but going has been
frustrating because I had to buy clothes that I could fit into. I'm hoping by
joining this group to continue on the path I'm on to losing enough weight to
have a better BMI and fit into smaller size clothes. I attend a yoga class
approx once a week and walk every day and have some days or parts of the day
where I watch what or how much I eat. I'm working on getting back on track with
better eating and more exercise.
Hiiiiiii Daisy!!
Just want to say YAY for you!!! Congrats on THAT weight loss so far. How
amazing! How awesome!! I need to get on that boat... cut the sugary crap and
less McDonalds... how did you have the will power/self control?! That is
probably my biggest struggle. Any advice?! :)

Great Question!
I haven't heard this before. I would think, if it's true, the difference would
be minimal at best. Let's see what our health guru, Daniela Nahas has to say.
Daniela - do you have recommendations on the best pasta to eat? How much should
one person eat in a week, on a healthy diet? I love pasta as well, and have been
depriving myself of it for my waistline.
Any tips?
Here's a great read on whole grains and carbs - but it doesn't entirely solve
the pasta mystery:

Is is true that if you cook your pasta al dente , which is slightly hard you
ingest less sugar and therefore less calories.
Before I start this I wanted the check with all of you.
Hi there,
Most people get hungry around that time, which makes a lot of sense since there
are a lot of hours between lunch time and dinner time. You should ideally be
fueling your body every 3 - 4 hours.
Fruit alone as a snack is usually not enough for most people as it is high in
sugar - although a much better choice than junk food - but not necessarily what
your body needs to sustain you to your next meal. Sugar is easily absorbed into
your blood stream and may actually leave you feeling hungrier.
You should try to have a snack that combines a portion of carbohydrates (such as
fruit) and protein. The protein will slow down the sugar absorption into your
body.
Some examples on what to eat:
Small handful of raw nuts such as almonds and walnuts (organic & raw is best)
w/half a piece of fruit.
A few whole grain crackers or 1/2 piece of fruit with nut butter
Small cup of plain organic yogurt mixed with small portion of fruit of your
choice - 1/2 apple & cinnamon, or berries etc...
What not to eat: Anything high in sugar, including white refined breads and
processed foods.
Hope this helps.

I made this great "green soup" in my slow cooker...
added leeks, broccoli, celery, spinach, olive oil, zucchini and cilantro - i
didn't even have to watch it - when it was done - i pureed it thickly and it
sticks in your belly without the loaded calories.
Cheers!

I hear ya! I often struggle to get through the 3pm slump.. it's hard when the
vending machine is calling me! BUT I try to avoid it, and will have a tablespoon
of almond butter (my new favourite thing) with some celery and carrots... I also
keep a supply of granola bars at my desk.
But let's hear from Yahoo's diet guru - Daniela, what would you recommend as a
fulfilling post-lunch snack?

Hi there,
SO many of you said you joined this group to get more info and motivation on
your fitness levels..
Please - take advantage of our expert member, Daniela Nahas, who is Yahoo!
Canada's fitness guru. Just post your question right on this message board, with
'To Daniela' in your subject line...
Whether it's about finding a healthy weight or getting tips on perfecting the
'woman pushup'.. she's our lady.
So go ahead - get asking!!
Hey all,
I just wanted to let you that Daniela Nahas - Yahoo's expert on diet and fitness
- has joined the Special K community group.. I know we're all a little confused,
or at least looking for some inspiration, when it comes to weight loss and
fitness - so she's an excellent resource to have on board.
She's agreed to answer our questions - on how to eat healthy, work out properly
and just overall feel better about our health...
Please - post your questions for her right here on the message board.
She's always looking for topics to write about (she posts weekly articles on
Diet & Fitness), so your question could be the starting point for more great
articles from her. Welcome to the community, Daniela!
A little about Daniela:
She's the co-founder of the Best Body Bootcamp in Toronto - an intense, 3x a
week workout program that really, really gets you into shape fast. (I've done it
- 6am came quick, and it hurt, but was it worth it!) She has amazing menu ideas
and is really a great lady to speak with about all things health-related.
We look forward to your questions!
Hey Gail!
Yes - I love salads too, especially in the summertime... One of our writers,
Mairlyn Smith, posted this fantastic recipe a while ago, for a killer
'all-in-one' summer salad.
Check it out:

94/main-course-summer-salads
It makes a fantastic main course (i tried it on the weekend!) and it saves you
having to cook with a hot stove on a warm summer night..
Enjoy :) Let me know how you like it - and please, share some of your fave yummy
salad recipes with the group!

No I don't weigh myself. I know when I look my best and feel great. The number
doesn't mean anything. Thats why I joined this group. I am not looking or
feeling my best and I need to make changes. My weight doesn't matter nor does
the size of my clothes. That is just another number.
