Terra Estrangeira (1997)
Um filme dirigido por Walter Salles e Daniela Thomas
Produzido por Flávio R. Tambellini
Com Fernanda Torres – Fernando Alves Pinto – Luis Melo – Alexandre
Borges – Laura Cardoso – João Lagarto com partticipação especial de
Tcheky Karyi
Brasil, 1990.
90.

“Foreign Country” (1997)
A Brazilian movie directed by Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas
Produced by Flávio R. Tambellini
With Fernanda Torres – Fernando Alves Pinto – Luis Melo – Alexandre
Borges – Laura Cardoso – João Lagarto and special participation of
Tcheky Karyi
Brazil 1990. The Collor plan has just been put into place. Without
seeing any perspective in a country in chaos, Paco, a youngster of 20
years of age, decides to go to Portugal after his mother’s death
accepting a ‘deal’ that will pay for his trip. In Lisbon, Alex, a
Brazilian of 25 years has just left her boyfriend who was involved
with the same scheme of contraband. The destiny of these two
youngsters will without a doubt get involved in a desperate flight.
The thriller, a movie with its down to earth aspect and romantics has
become a cult-movie for the liberty of its narrative and the
originality of its images. A poetic movie with flashing actors that
had a deep impact in the Brazilian movie industry in the 90’s.

O Talentoso Mr. Ripley (Paramount/Miramax).

THE GRADUATE CENTRE FOR STUDY OF DRAMA (UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO)
PRESENTS:

Fighting Words:  Pugnacious Plays for Tough Times

Sunday November 15, 2009, 2:30pm

The Candle King (O Rei da Vela)

by Oswald de Andrade

a reading of the 1933 Brazilian play

Robert Gill Theatre
214 College Street

Admission: Food donation/ or $5

For more information: 416-978-7986

http://www.graddrama.utoronto.ca/

The Candle King (O Rei da Vela), was written by Oswald de Andrade in
1933 and recently translated by Ana Bernstein and Sarah J. Townsend.
Written by the author of the Anthropophagist Manifesto, which
proposed a 'cannibalistic" relationship to colonial and imperial
culture ? overcoming by devouring ? The Candle King is a
ferocious, hysterical, Ubu-esque attack on Brazilian society and
economics, as well as the conventions of dramatic and theatrical
form. Abelard l, The Candle King, who made his fortune selling
candles used to mourn the dead, is also a moneylender who cruelly
takes advantage of his clients' misfortunes with the help of his
assistant, the whip-carrying socialist, Abelard ll. In a grotesque
parody of the medieval romance, Abelard l is engaged to marry Heloise
of Lesbos, who hails from an aristocratic Sao Paolo family, now
fallen on hard times.  Trouble in '33, and again in a European
revival in '68.

The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama is pleased to present the
fourth play reading in its fall reading series Fighting Words:
Pugnacious Plays for Tough Times, five plays that wrestle with the
individual response to economic distress.  Co-ordinated by Guillermo
Verdecchia, performed on a series of Autumn Sunday afternoons, these
scripts were written for another time and in another place, but in
some measure they continue to resonate with the here and now.
Offering the essential experience of live theatre, these plays are
stripped-down one-time-only performances about money, produced for no
money, and charging none ? well almost none. We are requesting a
donation of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank or a donation of $5 at
the door - if you can afford it.

The cast includes:  Kate Abrams, John Astington, Paul Babiak, Nicole
Bischoff, Alaine Hutton, Aida Jordão, Martin Julien, Shelley
Liebembuk, Tom McGee, Adriano Sobretado Jr. and Paula Sperdakos.

The FPCBP is a non-profit organization focused on promoting a number of business initiatives and the academic achievement of Portuguese Canadian youth.

For the past 28 years, the Federation has had the pleasure of distributing Secondary and Post-Secondary Scholarships, making us the oldest and most prestigious scholarship program in the Portuguese community. In over the past 8 years alone we have donated an excess of over $400.000.

On behalf of the Federation, I am pleased to advise that we will be once again awarding deserving candidates a scholarship in amounts between $1,000 and $2,500.

We are asking that you promote our scholarships by:
