Ola!For Helder: I'm having difficulty getting on onelist. If this
message
doesn't get out there, could you make sure it does. Tx.
For those who already know me, hey how´s it goin? For those who don´t
my name is Cleo Alves and I am proud to say that I am a founding member
of VoxNova. I would also like to welcome any and all to this virtual
world of
Voxlandia. I hope your adventures here prove fruititious. I also want
to congratulate those responsible for getting VoxNova on the web,
especially now since I´m no longer in Toronto, but across the seas in
the fabled land of fado, saudade and bacalhau. I´m in Portugal studying
to become a new and improved Lusiada at the University of Coimbra. This
internet stuff makes it so much easier to keep in touch with fellow
canucks and other neworlders of similar origin.
Since I´m over here, I would like to offer my services as a sort of
Portuguese and European correspondent, posting notes and reports of
happenings over here...cultural, political, social, whatever. You got a
question, just ask me.
Now I have a few questions for you guys...can anyone out there get me
the e-mail address for Professor Manuela Marujo at the U of T and for
Mr. Domingos Marques? Is Silva Magazine still going? Could someone
please get back to me on that.I guess that´s all for now. Adeus.Cleo.

Ola a todos os membros da lista da VoxNova.
Ha ja algum tempo que tenho recebido as mensagens de todos mas ainda nao me
tinha apresentado.
O meu nome e Sonia Fernandes e moro presentemente em Toronto. Frequento a

possas compartilhar deste projecto.

Tchau a todos, beijinhos,

Sonia Fernandes

PS. If there is anyone who would rather prefere me to write in English, please
say so. I don't know if everyone is Ok with Portuguese.

Also, on the topic of translations, i've subscribed to a list on

i'm glad that it is a 'program' that is doing that kind of translating,
& that someone isn't actually getting paid to come up with aberrations
like that!

by the way, thank you, Tony, for your intro (both of you!).
Why doesn't everyone else on the list follow suit?

hey!
A Brazilian modern dance artist is performing this weekend
(to Jan.23) at the Winchester Street theatre (80 winchester,
(416)204- 1082). I saw a preview at the Premiere Dance theatre
(Harbourfront) last weekend & the guy is GOOD! His name is Newton
Moraes, the show is called "The thorn in the Rose" (don't let the Title
ruin it for you). Call the number above for more info.
...of course, it helps if you like modern or experimental dance!

by the way, spinitch, i think you found yourself a real winner with that
translation site (!!!).......:)

If anyone is interested in having text translated there's a web page that
does it for you (in a half-ass way). There's a few languages to choose
from, including English <--> Portuguese. It can translate web pages and
text.
The address is http://www.systransoft.com/ . You can have a good laugh at
some of the translations.
Here's the translation for this email:

Se qualquer um estiver interessado em ter o texto traduzido há um Web page
que o faça para você (em uma maneira do metade-burro). Há algumas línguas a
escolher de, including o < inglês -- > Portuguese. Pode traduzi-lo páginas
Web e o texto. O endereço é http://www.systransoft.com /. Você pode ter um
bom rir de algumas das traduções. Está aqui a tradução para este email:

The above translated back to english:

If any one will be interested in having the translated text has a Web page
that it makes it for you (in a way it half-donkey). It has some languages
to choose of, including < English -- > Portuguese. It can traduziz it Web
pages and the text. The address is http://www.systransoft.com /. You can
have a good one for laughing at some of the translations. It is the
translation for this email here:

hehehe. bem, que seija metade-burro ou half-donkey talvez faça jeito a alguem.

Oi pessoal, aqui esta um link para um site que contem boms dicionarios,
glossarios, livros de pesquisa e referencia, etc, Eu ia coloca-lo na seccao
'bookmarks', mas como nao trata de assuntos particularmente 'Portugas', decidi
mandar a todos directamente. Bom proveito.

Hi! Here's a link to a site containing loads of dictionaries, glossaries &
reference guides of all stripes. I was going to include it in the "bookmarks"
section but didn't because it doesn't strictly deal with things 'portuguese'.
So i'm sending it directly. Enjoy.

(If anyone wants to 'bookmark' it, go ahead.

Hi,

My name is Antoinette, but everyone calls me toni. I just wanted to say hello
to
everyone since I'm a newcomer to the group. A little about myself, I'm 28 years
old and work for a large Television station in toronto. I am of a portuguese
and
italian descent. Well, I don't want to say to much, and make this extremely
long.

I look forward to speaking with everyone.

From: spiNitch <manuel@...>

It has been my experience that occasionally messages sent to addresses at
hotmail.com do not arrive at their destination (i get this message from my
ISP: 'Host connect failed - destination host not responding'). This has
happened to me with different addresses at different times. The work-around
for this problem is to send the message a second time - it worked for me
anyway. (please do not double-post to the list)
However, list messages are handled by Onelist and there's no way of me
knowing whether hotmail members are getting all the posts or not. There's a
few of you on this list using hotmail accounts, perhaps this is an issue
you should take up with hotmail/MS.
The problem could be that the hotmail service can only handle so many
messages at a time, and their membership has overgrown the service
capacity... but what do i know... like i said, contact hotmail if this is a
concern to you.

P.S. there was at least one case when a hotmail member did not receive a
voxNOVa post.

Hi Tony Tavares.
I've included Lusaweb in the 'bookmarks' section, it seems like an
excellent site. Thanks for sending it to the list!
(list members can access Lusaweb anyway via the link in the e-mail you

Hi Sandra,
Sorry about all the confusion. I'll try to clarify things for you:

Messages sent to the list are 'bounced' to all members, including the
member who sent the message. It is then up to individual members to
responde to issues/questions they are interested in. On this list we can
discuss anything that is of concern to us (=list members). We can also use
the list to let everyone know about events, news, resources, etc.
After a while you'll get to know everyone on the list. Members names are
attached to the messages they post (like any other email). A few of us have
already introduced ourselves. This is an option to any new member, let us
know who you are, where you are, or whatever you want to tell us about
yourself.
Members can also send each other private emails (not to the list), if they
feel that the post is inappropriate to the voxNOVa list.

To take a look at the archives go to http://www.onelist.com . Then click on
'User Center' on the left hand side of the page. You will be prompted to
enter your 'Email Address' and 'Password' (the same you used to register).
After you type in the info, click on the 'Log In' button. You'll get a page
that lists the mailing lists you are subscribed to. Click on the one that
says 'voxnova' under the 'list' heading. You'll get a page with the list
description and 3 links at the bottom: 'View Archives', 'Post Message', and
'Bookmarks'. From here you can do any of these 3 things. (Note: if you have
an email program you don't need to use the 'Post Message' link to post
messages. You can send your messages to voxnova@onelist.com ). If you click
on 'View Archives' it will take you to a page showing the most recent
archive (archives are created nightly and include all the messages from
that day). Click on 'Archive Index' to view all previous archives.

I hope this makes it clearer for everyone. if not i'll keep trying.

xau for now

Hi,

I'm a professor of engineering here at the University of Toronto. If
anybody needs information about careers in science and engineering, I would
be happy to try to help. I don't think enough of us consider that path,
and it is always a pleasure to see a Portuguese name on my class list --
easier to pronounce! My research area is on how to design computers to
make them easier for people to use (see web site below), so I could provide
more information on that kind of thing.

Hi Manuel,

How are you?

I am having problems with this sight. I really don't know how to get
there or where to go for the archives, better, I am not sure I
understand what this is all about.

Can you please send me more information about it? And how can we get in
touch or know who is involve or who is in the list?? Are there no names,
just posting of messages?

Thank you for taking time to read this message.

First of all, hope you all had a great holiday.
I also want to welcome the few members that joined the list recently. We
now have 10 subscribers and are awaiting others.

There's a few things about this list that everyone should know about:

Messages sent to the list are not only bounced to all members, but are also
archived at the Onelist site. Only subscribers to the VoxNOVa list have
access to these archives. The archives are a good reference for new members
to learn about the history of the list and what topics have been discussed.
There's not much there yet ofcourse, but if you're curious take a look
(click on 'User Center'. Then click on 'voxnova' for the list center).
From there you can also check out the bookmarks section. You'll notice that
Helder has contributed some bookmarks already -thanx Helder. If anyone has
any bookmarks to contribute that are of relevance to the list, you're
welcome to post them, or send them to me and i'll be happy to do it.

For reasons of privacy, the list of subscribers and their emails are not
available for viewing except by the moderators; in this case myself and
Helder. Ofcourse we will all get to know each other by posting/responding
to the list.

Just one more thing. Only subscribers can post messages. In other words, if
a non-subscriber sends a message to voxnova@onelist.com, we will not get
that message. This is a good way of preventing spamming.

If anyone has any questions or comments about the way the list is set up
(re: archives, sending messages), don't esitate to post.

hello/Ola!

Just a quick note to invite our new subscribers, particularly those that
I don't know personally already (which is most of you), to let me know
if there are any suggestions or concerns you may have re this list, or
if you want to know anything about VoxNova's activities prior to the
creation of this list (anything not covered by our rather long intro &
greeting messages). Also, please drop us your intro at your earliest
convenience, so that we may get to know you. It'll also give us an idea
of the kind of info you are interested in.
Finally, if anybody wants to take on the task of translating these
messages from English to Portuguese or French, by all means, let-rrrip!
I'd do it if i had internet access, but i have to use a library, and
there is always someone breathing down my neck to have their turn on the
computer = that is, my time here is limited. Ciao!
