Welcome to your Birmingham Street website! We'd like you to take a walk down memory lane with us, your old nighbours and friends. This site is meant to be a gathering place for former residents who are interested in sharing old photos, memories, comments and correspondance about their days of living on Birmingham and surrounding streets. Most of us lived on Birningham Street from the early 1940's onward, in what is now one of the most historic neighbourhoods of downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada! Historically known as Schmidtville, the area is bordered on the north by Clyde Street, the south by Morris Street and between Queen Street on the east and Brenton Street on the west. The historic name, Schmidtville, was unknown to most of us until an October 19, 2006 story in the Halifax Herald about a Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia Tour of historic homes in Schmidtville. The houses advertised for the tour were on Birmingham Street, Dresden Row and Morris Street. Imagine people lining-up to pay $ 25 each to visit homes in the area were we lived! Little did we know or understand about the valuable historic nature of our old neighbourhood. Today it is one of the most desireable places to live in Halifax, with-in walking distance of Spring Garden Road and downtown. This basic 3 block area were we lived, grew up, went to school and some of us worked, is located in the heart of old Halifax, with houses dating back to the late 1700's. That's not to long after Halifax was founded. In spite of talk to tear down this area in the late 1950's-early 1960's, in this Schmidtville area, the original buildings remain essentially intact today. Unfortunately the upper part of Queen, Birmingham and Dresden did fall under the wrecker's ball and all those "historic" homes were lost. The demolished area is still a parking lot today, 50 years later! Enjoy your visit, hope it brings back lots of fond memories of Birmingham Street, one of the best neighbourhoods to grow up in Halilifax!
